HP Enterprise let Russia review the Pentagon's security software

Last year, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) allowed a Russian defense agency to analyze the source code of a cybersecurity software used by the Pentagon, Reuters reports. The software, a product called ArcSight, is an important piece of cyber defense for the Army, Air Force and Navy and works by alerting users to suspicious activity -- such as a high number of failed login attempts -- that might be a sign of an ongoing cyber attack. The review of the software was done by a company called Echelon for Russia's Federal Service for Technical and Export Control as HPE was seeking to sell the software in the country. While such reviews are common for outside companies looking to market these types of products in Russia, this one could have helped Russian officials find weaknesses in the software that could aid in attacks on US military cyber networks.

Security firm Symantec will no longer allow Russian authorities to inspect its source code, according to Reuters. "It poses a risk to the integrity of our products that we are not willing to accept," the company's Kristen Batch said. The worry is that by allowing the supposedly independent Federal Security Service (FSB) to examine source code, it would give Russia an inside view of potential software vulnerabilities and exploits.

HP successfully tests its vision of memory-focused computing

HP's grand dream for the future of computing, The Machine, is no longer just a set of clever ideas and hardware research. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (the business-focused company that emerged from HP's split) has successfully tested its Memory-Driven Computing architecture, where memory is more important to completing tasks than raw processing power. It's just a proof-of-concept prototype, but it shows that everything works: compute nodes that share a pool of fast but permanent memory, speedy photonics-based data links and the custom software needed to make it all run.

  • HP won't ship products for almost a week in August

We hope you weren't dead set on getting that shiny new HP laptop in early August. HP is warning partners that it won't ship any orders to customers and resellers between August 1st and August 6th due to a "shipping transition" necessary for its upcoming split into two companies. You can still order whatever you like during that limbo period, but it won't start moving until August 7th at the earliest. It's an unusual gap, to put it mildly, but likely important given that HP is orchestrating one of the biggest tech splits ever. Update: While the transition will affect HP's corporate partners and resellers, a representative told us simple orders from HP.com will ship as normal.
