Contestants lined their prospective Hyperloop pods on SpaceX's 1.25-kilometer track at the company's Hawthorne, California headquarters -- and for the third time, the WARR student team from the Technical University of Munich won the competition. This time, their vehicle topped out at 290 miles per hour, which beat the team's previous record of 200 mph set last August.

One hundred and fifty teams from around the world entered the third SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. Of those, 25 made it to the company's weeklong event in Hawthorne, California. And like the prior years' events under the Southern California sun, after days of testing and dry runs, only a select few were chosen to do a proper vacuum-sealed run down the 1.25 kilometer track.

Adjacent to SpaceX headquarters, 25 teams gathered for another Hyperloop Pod Competition. This time the winner would be judged by how quickly they could go down the 1.25 kilometer (about .77 miles) track. On the final day of competition, three teams advanced to the finals and had the chance to push their pod to the limit.

Trains in the US are slow and boring. They may have brought this country together over 100 years ago, but unless you're commuting, when we think about spanning long distances, we look to the sky. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk thinks there's a better way: a return to the Earth and the rails. Well, actually, just one rail and a very long tube. The Hyperloop -- an idea he dropped on the world back in August 2013 -- is why 120 teams of college and high school students gathered at Texas A&M this weekend in a competition to build the best vehicles to ride those tubes. Here's a closer look at what they came up with.
