  • Report: PS4 teases impatient players with game preloading in April

Come April, PlayStation fans can enjoy the same masochistic waiting game as Steam users when preloading comes to PS4. Sony itself has yet to confirm the feature but Sucker Punch, the studio behind Infamous: Second Son, said on Twitter that it's on the way this spring. "No preload until April," said Sucker Punch, responding to Twitter users anxious to play the new Infamous. "[And] for North America, the PS Store will update at midnight PST, so 3AM EST." Even when pre-ordering a digital copy of PlayStation 4, PS3 or PS Vita games through PSN, users still need to wait for games to actually hit their release dates to download them. Steam and Origin PC users can often download game files ahead of release so they can play the very second a game is officially available. Unfortunately would-be PS4 superheroes will still have to wait a few minutes to scratch their Infamous itch. [Images: Sony Computer Entertainment]

Is Infamous: Second Son gaming Nirvana? Our four-and-a-half star review said that the game "represents a great leap forward both in terms of gameplay and in graphical fidelity, and establishes a high standard for what players can expect from the PlayStation 4," so even if it's not perfect, it's worth making room in your heart-shaped box for Delsin and company. But we're not the only tourists to developer Sucker Punch's vision of Seattle. Read past the break to see what others think of the Infamous series' PS4 debut.

Welcome ladygeeks and gentlenerds to the new era of gaming. The one where you get to watch, and comment, as other people livestream gameplay from next-gen consoles. Since our live gameplay of Titanfall for Xbox One went over so well, we've decided to make this a regular feature for any major, new release, quirky indie, or, really, any game we deem worthy enough. Because games! They're fun! Are you a good guy or are you a bad guy? It's a morality tale as old as time itself -- or, maybe it's just as old as the first inFamous on PlayStation 3 back in 2009. Cole, the protagonist of the series' previous two titles, may be dead (we think?), but his legacy lives on in Delsin, the new superhero/villain (it's your choice, really) at the heart of Sucker Punch's inFamous Second Son. The game, set for release tomorrow, is Sony's first in-house AAA exclusive for the PlayStation 4. And lucky you, we're here to play it live so you can virtually try before you buy. It's all happening just after the break. Update: It's over now, but thanks for playing!

  • Infamous: Second Son review: Thank you for smoking

    by

There's a stark duality at the heart of the Infamous series. The original Infamous was built on a solid foundation, putting players in the role of a modern-day superhero with a repertoire that expanded gameplay in satisfying, meaningful ways throughout its campaign. Its sequel boasted a number of improvements, but its mechanics weren't always explored to their fullest potential. Playing through InFamous 2 recently reminded me of the series' darker half. Though its upgradable superpowers were impressive and its parkour mechanics were fun, its story missions frequently came up short. Throughout the campaign, protagonist Cole MacGrath was too often saddled with repetitive arena fights and escort missions -- a poor fit for a man who can shoot lightning from his fingertips. Infamous: Second Son emphasizes the series' strengths in its debut appearance on the PlayStation 4, easily trumping previous Infamous games while showcasing the power of Sony's latest console. In the process, it drastically overhauls the series' defining elements, stripping away the weaker parts and focusing on what works best. If you found previous Infamous games more frustrating than fun, Second Son's gleefully destructive superheroics will win you over as a fan.

Infamous: Second Son hero Delsin Rowe boasts neon, smoke, and other superpowers he acquires by defeating fellow conduits. Sure, the smoke powers are cool, but neon is fun to watch because it's deadly and pretty, like a daffodil wielding a morning star - a daffodil that was somehow capable of using a morning star. You get the point. Sucker Punch's open-world superhero game trips the light fantastic on PS4 next week, when it hits retail shelves worldwide on March 21. [Image: Sony Computer Entertainment]

"Oh, man – rain." That's the first thing people say when asked to picture Seattle, Infamous: Second Son Director Nate Fox says. In creating a digitized Seattle for PS4, Sucker Punch plays with light flares on wet streets, low cloud cover, fog and the physics of exploding liquor stores.

It's that time of year again! No, not when we gather with our loved ones and take a break from working. It's Game of the Year season, meaning we've got a great excuse to look back on games we played in 2013 and tell everyone about our favorite experiences. The PlayStation Blog finished tallying up votes from its readers yesterday, announcing the Platinum through Bronze-worthy victors in a blog post. In regards to their shiny new PS4s, readers most enjoyed their relaxing, sing-along journeys on Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's Caribbean seas. The Last of Us won over the hearts of PS3 users, presumably for the knee-slappers that came out of Ellie's joke book. Vita fans were most enamored with Tearaway, Media Molecule's crafty platformer made out of paper. Lastly, Housemarque's voxel-jumbling shooter Resogun was voted as the year's best digital release. Looking forward to 2014, fans are most anticipating Infamous: Second Son, the smoky super hero story based in Seattle, which you can expect on March 21. If you're curious about more than just the winners, the full post also lists runners up for each category as well as personal picks from the PlayStation Blog staff.

Sony and Spike TV are teaming up for the PS4 All Access: Greatness Awaits launch event, which will air on Spike TV, DirecTV and stream online November 14 at 11pm ET. The PS4 launch celebration takes place in New York, where Sony promises "exclusive world premieres and announcements about the PS4 games that will define 2014 and beyond." We expect we'll see the launch lineup, but also Driveclub, Infamous: Second Son, Watch Dogs and perhaps some unannounced games. The PS4 launches in North America on November 15 for $399. Sony's next-gen console features a new DualShock 4 controller, optional PS4 Eye camera, but will not support DLNA for media streaming over networks, nor will it allow .mp3 file playback and external USB storage at launch. Update: This post originally stated that DLNA would be available on the PS4 at launch, which is incorrect. We apologize for the error and have updated the text above accordingly.

Sony has revealed the pre-order bonuses for inFamous: Second Son, as well as the contents of an inFamous: Second Son Collector's Edition package. The Collector's Edition will cost $79.99 and come in a case with special artwork, and will add another vest to protagonist Delsin Rowe's already-impressive collection. Pre-ordering a regular version of the game will upgrade you to a Limited Edition copy with a unique foil cover. Pre-ordering either version gets you access to the Cole's Legacy DLC, which bridges the gap between inFamous 2 and Second Son. Completing the Cole's Legacy missions will unlock Cole's jacket for Delsin to wear, and according to the PlayStation Blog, will only be available to those who pre-order. "[Cole's Legacy] won't be available for purchase when inFamous: Second Son launches. It's only available through these offers here," the website states. The Collector's Edition of the game also comes with some physical goodies, including pins (that sounds familiar), a patch, vinyl decals and a replica of Delsin's beanie. Coupled with Aiden Pearce's vigilante mask from the Watch Dogs Limited Edition, you should be able to stay plenty warm next year.

  • Rumor: Infamous coming to Vita

A single sentence uttered by a developer in a recent Q&A has spawned the rumor that Sucker Punch Productions' Infamous series will be making an appearance on Sony's Vita handheld. At the 5:45 mark of the DualShockers interview above you can hear Infamous: Second Son director Nate Fox obliquely reference a potential Vita entry in the Infamous franchise when asked point-blank about its existence after misinterpreting a question regarding Vita-related functionality for Second Son. "Right now we're only talking about the PS4 game," states Fox. "I would love to talk to you about any Vita-related titles when, or if the time comes." Was this a casual slip of the tongue or something more meaningful? VGLeaks sees the quote as evidence of an upcoming Infamous game in development for the Vita. "This statement sounds like Sucker Punch has been working on Infamous for PS Vita, however it could be just a project in an early stage, a test for that hardware," said the site. The next entry in the franchise, Infamous: Second Son, is currently slated for exclusive release on the PlayStation 4 in Q1 2014. We've reached out to both Sony and Sucker Punch for more information. Update: This article's sourcing has been updated based on new information.

Sucker Punch uses real-life extras to populate the city of Seattle in Infamous: Second Son – developers recruited 75 friends, family members and professionals over three days to sit in front of a complex camera installment, absolutely still, while the lenses strobed out layers of their faces. With friends like Sucker Punch, who needs seizure medication? Everyone, probably. There's a visual breakdown of Sucker Punch's scanning process on Game Informer. Or, if you're patient, just buy an Xbox One later this year and sit really still in front of that always-on Kinect camera – and maybe you'll spot your own fine face in a next-gen crowd. (You probably won't. We hope.)

Sucker Punch announced Infamous: Second Son at this week's PlayStation 2013 event, following an intro by game director Nate Fox that can only be described as... disturbing. So can the electric series' latest entry live up to his intensity? Well, there's a ways to go yet before we'll find out - Sony hasn't revealed if Second Son will be at the PS4's launch - but Sucker Punch took to the PlayStation Blog to shine a bit more light on the game.Second Son is set seven years after Infamous 2, and in Seattle - a real-life location as opposed to Empire City, which was based on New York. It stars 24-year-old Delsin Rowe, who Sucker Punch paints as a self-described underachiever. Whereas previous protagonist Cole McGrath was all about electricity, Rowe's superpowers, at least initially, revolve around smoke. That may not sound as badass as electric powers at first, but the game's debut trailer showed a smoked Rowe can whip up plenty of havoc. As for Fox's (melo)dramatic intro, that was designed to underline the paranoia and restricted freedoms of Second Son's world in the wake of the last game's cataclysmic events. As you might expect, the prohibitory forces in charge and new hero Rowe aren't exactly best mates. On a final gameplay note, Sucker Punch suggested we could see the return of good/evil choices as per previous games: "As with all games in this series," said producer Brian Fleming, "the path the gameplay and story take will depend on the decisions you make along the way." %Gallery-179480%
