Justin Case Ultra-Slim Power Case keeps your iPad and other gizmos all juiced up
A lot of iPad accessory manufacturers are getting into the external battery pack market, not surprising when you consider how much usage the average iPad gets on a daily basis. The latest in the parade of power-packed iPad cases is from Innovative Technology in the form of the Justin Case Ultra-Slim Power Case for iPad (US$69.99). Design Like many of the similar products on the market, the Justin Case features a folio-type case with a slot to hold a 2nd through 4th-generation iPad in place. Inside the location where a keyboard would be found in a keyboard case is a 11,600 mAh rechargeable battery. That's enough to give a 2nd-generation iPad or iPad mini two charges, a 3rd-generation iPad a single recharge, and a 4th-generation model only .8 of a full charge. But hook up your iPhone (3GS, 4, 4S or 5) to the Justin Case and you'll be able to charge it up to seven times. The case is made of a rather generic gray "pleather", with a fold-out stand so that you can prop up the enclosed iPad while charging. There's a button on the battery side of the case which displays one to four blue LEDs to indicate the power level when pressed. I have to hand it to Innovative Technology for the included charging adapter, which is the same size and shape as Apple's little cube-like brick, only black instead of white. The company also includes a matching black USB to micro-USB cable for charging or for providing power to devices that use the micro-USB input. The review case was fully charged; Innovative Technology says a fully discharged case will take about 14 hours to charge up. As you'd expect with a big battery inside, the case weighs 1 lb., 2 oz. (397 grams) without an iPad installed. Functionality The Justin Case Ultra-Slim Power Case for iPad does its job quite well. I found the single-position stand to be somewhat annoying, since I prefer to have an "infinitely adjustable" stand for the most comfortable viewing experience. On the other hand, you can just flip the back of the case around and hold the entire assemblage in your hand, although it's a bit heavy. All-in-all, the case was quite well-made, and it's available from some online retailers for as little as $67. It's about $50 less expensive than a similar case made by Digital Treasures (Props Power Case), but note that for $30 more (suggested retail price), you can get something like the Limeade Blast L180X which has more battery capacity and allows you to use your favorite case. Conclusion The Justin Case Ultra-Slim Power Case for iPad is a solid performer, and if you can find it at a discount (Amazon sometimes has them in stock), it's a true bargain.
