Dell aims for the mainstream with its two new Windows convertibles
Here's the thing about Computex, the big computer show going on in Taiwan this week: Though lots of PC makers are announcing products here, they're almost all focusing on the low end. It's almost as if computer companies realize PC sales are on the decline, and have to slash prices! Take Dell, for instance: The company is here in Taipei showing off two Windows convertibles, which run the gamut from budget-friendly to solidly mid-range. Both devices -- the Inspiron 11 3000 series and the Inspiron 13 7000 series -- have a Lenovo Yoga-like design, with a screen that flips back 360 degrees into tablet mode (and Tent mode, and Stand mode -- you know the drill).
Inspiron Mini 13 now listed on Dell Canada website
Dell might have axed the Mini 12, but it seems like there's quite a few models waiting to fill the void -- we just saw the Inspiron 11z go on sale this morning, and now there's a mysterious link for an "Inspiron Mini 13" showing up on the Dell Canada site. We're assuming that means the hot new Inspiron 13 that launched in Singapore last month is about to make its North American debut with Mini branding -- and although calling a 13-inch machine with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo and ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 graphics a "Mini" seems a little odd, we can't say we'd be surprised if it came to pass. Updated Dell Inspiron 13 appears on Dell Singapore site -- and it looks kinda hot
We can't say we've ever found the Inspiron 13 particularly compelling, but there's a new model up on the Dell Singapore site right now and we're this close to falling in love -- it's thinner and lighter, takes some nice design cues from the Inspiron Mini and Studio lines, and the configuration with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo and ATI Mobility Radeon HD4330 graphics costs just S$1,399 ($962). Oh, and there's also an LED-backlit 1366 x 768 display, HDMI / VGA out, an ExpressCard/34 slot, and 1394 -- pretty great for under a grand. We're on pins and needles waiting for official US pricing information: not only do we expect it to be slightly lower, you just know Dell will be blowing these things out when back-to-school rolls around.[Thanks, Quaysar]
Dell's Inspiron 13 already reviewed: basic, but capable
Look, we know you've spent the last three or so hours toying around on Dell's build-to-order page, but be honest with yourself -- are you really willing to pull the trigger on an Inspiron 13 without taking one tiny peek at a review first? NotebookReview has snagged one of the new 13-inchers and taken it for a ride on the test bench, and overall, things are lookin' up. Reviewers found the design to be "sleek," the specifications to be "reasonable" and the price point "attractive." Beyond that, it also found the battery life to be surprisingly satisfactory, though the "cheap palm rests and noisy slot-loading optical drive" were small (albeit noteworthy) nuisances. In the end, critics summed things up by suggesting that if you're scouting "a basic mobile companion with good looks and a low price tag, then this is probably the right notebook for you." Dell Inspiron 13 now available build-to-order
Dell's Inspiron 13 made its Wal-Mart debut earlier this month, but now the budget back-to-school lappy is ready for you to trick it factory-style on Dell's site. Nothing too crazy on the options list, and it looks like you're stuck with some form of integrated graphics no matter what -- but hey, when the most extravagant configuration maxes out at $1,149, you can't be too picky.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Dell's new Inspiron 13 and Inspiron 518 are after your back to school dollar
Dell has never failed to provide compelling reasons -- particularly pricetags -- for students and / or their cash-strapped parents to pick up a Dell desktop or laptop on the way back to school. This year seems no exception, with Dell adding some special Inspiron configurations to its already beefy budget lineups. The Inspiron 13 laptop (pictured) is pretty much laptop 101, with a 13-inch screen, 8-in-1 media card reader and slot-loading DVD drive in the base model -- you'll have to fork over extra for WiFi, a webcam or Bluetooth. Wal-mart will be carrying a $699 version starting August 3rd, with full configuration coming to Dell.com later that month. The Inspiron 518 desktop (after the break) is similarly straightforward, with DirectX 10 integrated graphics, gigabit Ethernet and a pair of easy-access USB ports on top of the case, in addition to options for a 500GB hard drive and quad core processors. The starting price is $349, and the systems should be available today.
