Last year, Apple announced a Reese Witherspoon- and Jennifer Aniston-led drama as part of its growing slate of original shows, and now Steve Carell has signed on to the project. Still unnamed, the series centers on a morning TV show, and Carell will play an anchor who's trying to figure out how to remain relevant in an ever-changing media landscape. Apple has ordered two 10-episode seasons, and the show is scheduled to start filming next week, Deadline reports.

Netflix is continuing its recent string of big comedy coups. The service has acquired First Ladies, a political comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and comedienne Tig Notaro. The movie (penned by Notaro and wife Stephanie Allynne) will chronicle the escapades of the first woman US President (Aniston) and her wife (Notaro) soon after they move to the White House. There's no premiere date yet, but the title stands out as a collaboration between two of the streaming service's more familiar faces.

Apple's commitment to big-name original shows may go well, well beyond its Steven Spielberg anthology. Both Deadline and Recode sources have heard that Apple has secured the rights to a drama series created by and starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. There aren't too many details about the show, but it's expected to focus on life behind the scenes at a daily morning TV show. Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning will reportedly provide background material, with Stelter himselve acting as a consultant.

Those early adopters who've already picked up a Toshiba HD-A1 but don't want to buy duplicate copies of each movie for use on their current car and portable DVD players have gotten a reprieve from Warner Home Video, who just announced that the first hybrid HD-DVD/standard DVD will be available on May 9th. However, folks looking for a Matrix-like title to put their new toy through its paces will probably be disappointed with Warner's choice: the critically-panned 2005 Kevin Costner/Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy "Rumor Has It." Plus, don't think that the 480p content on the flip side of the disc is just a bonus, as these hybrid offerings are debuting for eleven dollars more than their single-copy counterparts. Still, if these discs enable you to create a backup of the flicks you buy on HD-DVD, even at non-HD resolutions, the extra dough might be worth it in order to get maximum utility from your purchased content.[Via eHomeUpgrade]
