We're live at Samsung's MWC 2017 press conference
We're here in Barcelona, fingers lightly resting against our keyboards in anticipation. We know we're not seeing a flagship phone, but what could that mean? Maybe new tablets, which has always been a strong suit for the company. But nothing's ever guaranteed. Fortunately we're just about to find out, so keep checking back here for our liveblog kickoff at 1pm ET.
Samsung will stream the GS7 launch in 360-degree video
For MWC in Barcelona, Samsung will be doing an Inception-like trick of letting you see its brand new devices -- using last year's devices. The company is presenting Unpacked 2016 in 360 degree VR for the first time, where it will unveil the latest Galaxy S7 phones. To watch the event on a mobile phone or PC, you choose one of four different viewpoints, then rotate the field of view to see it from any angle. The most interesting option, however, is to see it using a Gear VR device and a supported Galaxy smartphone.
Twitter is testing a timeline box for nearby events, too
Remember how Twitter is quietly testing timeline boxes that show trending TV shows? That's not a one-off experiment: TechCrunch has also discovered a similar test for live events happening nearby. Instead of focusing on a person or series, the new box highlights a representative event tweet and offers a shortcut to more tweets associated with that event's hashtag. As before, Twitter isn't directly confirming the existence of its latest trial run; it will only say that it practices "innovation through experimentation." Given the widened scope of the company's testing, however, there's a real chance that these context-sensitive cards could soon become ubiquitous.
AT&T reveals new multi-beam antenna tech for live events, could offer data speeds five times faster (video)
AT&T's improving its coverage at live events by establishing a new (impressive sounding) setup -- the five-beam multi-beam antenna. It works by dividing its customers' signals into five narrow parts, illustrated above by the color bands, upping the bandwidth by splitting traffic to each segment, enabling up to five times the data traffic. Ma Bell even used similar technology to craft a "super" multi-beam antenna, which expands the same idea into two rows of nine, possibly offering up to 18 times the speed of a typical single-tower arrangement. AT&T adds that this setup also reduces dropped calls and failed uploads, and is apparently already being put to use at live concerts and games. Not quite wrapping your head around it? Apple to hold media event on September 1st
It's official -- the media invites have just gone out from Apple to invite the select outlets to a company event on Wednesday, September 1st. That's a week earlier than BusinessWeek's prediction. Apple has historically used a September event to introduce new iPods and announce enhancements to the iTunes service. Apple TV, which is widely expected to be refreshed and relaunched (possibly with a naming/branding change to iTV), was originally introduced at a Fall event. In addition to the anticipated Apple TV update, many analysts are predicting a 4th generation iPod touch (possibly with cameras), an iPad refresh, an iTunes update (likely to 9.3 or 10.0), and a TV episode rental scheme. Regardless of what Apple introduces, TUAW will be virtually there to meta-liveblog the event, bringing you updates and analysis as they happen. Got some predictions? Share them in our comments.
Large Hadron Collider to search for God Particle using 7 TeV proton collisions, via live webcast (update: first collisions, video!)
The Large Hadron Collider is about to turn useful, people. Having recently jacked up its particle acceleration power to create 3.5 TeV (trillion electron volts) collisions, the researchers are today pressing ahead with plans to go to a full 7 TeV, which -- you won't be surprised to hear -- has never been done before. Provided the requisite 3.5 TeV per beam is reached, sustained and properly channeled into creating useful collisions, CERN will finally have the data it needs to start its long-awaited physics program based off the findings provided by the LHC. Best of all? The latest world record attempt is being broadcast live over the web right now so why not hit up that link below to witness some history in the making? Update: The momentous first protonic collisions at 7 TeV have just taken place, at just past 1PM CET. Now the time comes for researchers to parse all the incoming raw data, pore over it, analyze it, etc. We'll leave that to them, it's not like you can expect the God Particle to be discovered instantly. Microsoft's Windows Phone event at MWC kicks off tomorrow at 9AM ET
If you're both ready and set, then you'll be pleased to know that Microsoft has major Windows Mobile goings-on to discuss tomorrow at 9AM ET (3PM here in Spain). What does that really mean? Well based on the torrent of circumstantial (and actual) evidence we've seen, it looks like the big M is set to deliver its most important piece of mobile news in years: Windows Mobile 7. Or, Windows Phone 7 Series... or whatever it is they're calling it these days. Regardless, it looks like a new era for Redmond's smartphone platform, and we'll be there covering the whole thing minute-by-minute... as only Engadget can.
