    We all need to mature someday, and for Lotus, that time is now. Welcome to the Eletre, the company's first production SUV. An electric one at that, with comfortable seating for four or een five. Lotus has been historically known for producing cars that typified the bare minimum needed for enjoyable driving.

    Did you stare at the Lotus Evija and wonder how anyone could justify an electric hypercar costing over $2.6 million, especially from a brand best known for far lighter and cheaper gas vehicles? Apparently, you had no reason to doubt. Lotus told Autocar that it has already sold out of the Evija production run for 2020, which is due to start in the summer. It didn't provide specific numbers, but the automaker is expected to make 130 Evijas in total.

    With just minutes to go until Tesla reveals its electric 'Cybertruck,' Lotus has shown off some EV news of its own. We're getting our first good look at its all-electric Evija roadster in "high-speed action" ahead of its China debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show. According to Lotus, the hypercar has "entered its initial build phase in the UK." That should put it on track for production in 2020 when it will debut as "the most powerful production series road car in the world." In a statement, executive director Matt Windle said "Everything about the Evija is 'For The Drivers'. I don't believe there is another EV in the world that can claim this. From the mid-engined-inspired Lotus layout, to the aerodynamics and downforce, the driving position, vehicle stance and unbelievable performance. It is instantly recognisable as special with a unique character, yet it is unquestionably a Lotus."

But Lotus is back with a solid investment, the Evija electric supercar, and a plan to deliver cars that fit the Lotus brand regardless of powertrain.

    Lotus decided to make its latest hypercar not only all-electric but also incredibly powerful. The Evija is the company's first car with an electrified powertrain, which translates into a disgusting amount of power (2,000 PS or roughly 1973 in horsepower). For Lotus, the car represents a new beginning. CEO Phil Popham said the Evija will "re-establish our brand in the hearts and minds of sports car fans." For everyone else, it's a car that wants to go toe-to-toe with Tesla's Roadster in every way possible. Except for affordability. This is apparently what you get when you pay £1.7 million (over $2.1 million) for your next EV.

    No, Lotus isn't ready to spill the beans on its Type 130 electric hypercar. It is, however, ready to give the car a name: meet the Evija (pronounced "ev-eye-a"). While the company's choice of name is a bit strained -- it means "the first in existence" or "the living one" -- it makes sense given both Lotus' traditions and what it represents. The company has long given its cars names starting with E (Esprit, Elise, Exige), and it only seems fitting to name an EV as, well, "Ev."

    At the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show, Lotus has teased its first new production car in 11 years, the Type 130. The EV is now in advanced development stages and will be the "world's first full electric British hypercar," Lotus said. "Type 130 will be the most dynamically accomplished Lotus in our history," said CEO Phil Popham. "It marks a turning point for our brand and is a showcase of what we are capable of and what is to come from Lotus."

    Lotus' first electric car might be a 1,000HP monster

    Lotus won't be the first British car manufacturer to go electric, but it might make waves when it does. Autocar sources claim Lotus' first EV will be a 1,000BHP (about 1,013HP) hypercar costing about £2 million, or roughly $2.5 million. It'd compete with the likes of the Bugatti Chiron and McLaren P1 where current models like the Evora are aimed more at 'ordinary' sports cars.

    The name Lotus 1-2-3 may not mean much to you now, but mention it in front of geeks of a certain age and they'll be transported back to an era when IBM ruled supreme and people could aspire to own hard drives without selling their firstborn. IBM acquired the creator of that venerable spreadsheet software back in '95, and pulled the plug on sales last year when it became painfully clear that 1-2-3 was never going to come out on top again. Now, with the support window officially closed, let's just take a moment to remember an old stalwart that just passed into that digital ether that awaits all abandoned software. Lotus 1-2-3 first came to be some thirty years ago where it filled a niche left open by unambitious competitors like Visicalc (from whence Lotus founder Mitch Kapor came) and soon became one of the reasons to own an IBM PC. Alas, when you're on top, there's only one place to go. After defending its crown from a slew of eager competitors for years, Lotus 1-2-3 eventually became a footnote in the annals of computer history after Microsoft's Office came along and dominated the late '80s and beyond.

    Anyone who wanted a Tesla Roadster but showed up too late to the party (or too early) is about to get a second chance as soon as this year, if not quite in the way they expected. The Detroit Electric badge has been restored once more for the SP:01, a high-speed EV that shares Tesla's early use of a Lotus design -- albeit an Exige coupe this time, not an Elise. Its 201HP equivalent motor can also approximate the Roadster Sport's brisk 0-60MPH time of 3.7 seconds. That's roughly where the major similarities stop, however. The SP:01 should have a shorter range (around 180 miles on a European cycle) and will take a longer 4.3 hours to charge up from a 240V source, but it will cater to enthusiasts with a lighter carbon fiber body, a higher 155MPH top speed and even the choice of a manual transmission. Detroit Electric goes so far as to include a clutch, although stick shifters won't have to use it when starting or stopping. Just be ready to pony up in short order if you like the SP:01's notion of electric revivalism: only 999 examples of the $135,000 car will roll off the line after production starts in August.

  • Corning peels back the petals on Lotus Glass, promises low-power, high performance

    The glass masters over at Corning are at it again. The same company that unleashed Gorilla Glass upon the world has now come out with a brand new, albeit less ferocious-sounding material, known as Corning Lotus Glass. Designed with LCD and OLED displays in mind, this substrate promises to deliver pristine picture quality without sucking up too much power. According to Corning, this performance is largely due to Lotus' thermal and dimensional stability, which allows for greater resolution and speedier response times. These thermal properties also allow it to maintain its form during especially hot processing, thereby avoiding any nasty warping effects. Corning Lotus Glass has already launched into production, but there's no word yet on when we can expect to see it pop up in commercial products.     Concept cars are like unicorns -- they're so prevalent and vaporous, they're hardly worth remarking upon. Every so often, though, one pops out into the ether that's really worth a second look. Lotus' Evora 414E Hybrid concept certainly fits into that category.This plug-in car boasts (or would boast, should it come into existence), 1.2 liter, three-cylinder engine, independent electric motors for the rear wheels, with a range of about 300 miles. The glass engine cover pictured above, however, is just one of the features we find ourselves double-taking here. The Evora 414E would also pack some 'vroom vroom' noises by way of its audio system to take care of the ever-pressing danger of silent auto engines. The engine can operate on alcohol-based fuels or regular old gasoline, and the battery-only range is in the neighborhood of 35 miles. The Lotus Evora 414E hybrid will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

  • LG Lotus Elite hands-on: it's red, square, and marginally attractive

    We saw the LG Lotus Elite launch yesterday and today we had a chance to play with it for a few minutes. Sure, we did poke a bit of fun at its strange styling, but, once in hand we were pleasantly surprised to find it's really no better. Though, the keyboard, both displays, and the UI are actually quite nice to use, so we'd wager this will likely be a pretty successful handset at the $99 price tag it launches at. What definitely stood out, though, was the ability to get at so many features via the external display and the swiveling camera -- that actually rotates with the hinge -- is a nice touch, too. Luckily for us, Martin Valdez -- you may remember him from last year -- was on hand to give us a walkthrough, and did so in fine style.     In case there was any sliver of doubt that the so-called LX610 Lotus Elite from LG was a real device ready to fill the original Lotus' unusually wide shoes on Sprint, feast your eyes on this: a giant billboard covering the side of a Las Vegas hotel pimping the Chocolate Touch, the eXpo, and -- yes, that's right -- the Lotus Elite. To be fair, there's no name mentioned here, but we've got a feeling it's right considering the rest of the intel has ended up panning out. Stay tuned.
