Capcom clearly couldn't resist the temptation to hop on the card game bandwagon. The gaming giant has teamed up with GungHo to release Teppen (no, not Tekken), a card battler for Android and iOS that revolves around better-known characters from Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Darkstalkers and other classics. If you've ever wanted to see Chun-Li fight Dante or Morrigan take on Mega Man, you can make it happen.

  • 'Mega Man' creator says Japanese publishers need to 'wake up'

If you grew up playing any installment of the storied Mega Man franchise, the name Keiji Inafune should carry some weight. Inafune's one of the masterminds behind the beloved metallic man in blue we first met in the NES era. And with his new game, Mighty No. 9, a spiritual successor to his Capcom legacy, he famously kicked off a new wave of Japanese developers who've struck out on their own with the help of crowdfunding. But Inafune didn't get to this point solely because of a desire to try more modern things; he was essentially forced to turn to Kickstarter when Capcom refused to innovate the beloved Mega Man IP he helped create. "As a creator, as myself, the best thing that happened to this project [Mighty No. 9] is that I have the IP," he says of the experience with Kickstarter. "The IP is mine. The IP is the company's IP, so we can do whatever we want. And that will actually speed things up really nicely because once the backers ask for something, we don't have to go over to the publisher or the first-party [studio] ... or whoever we're working with. We can just make the decision."

Capcom kicked off a sale on games in its Mega Man series through the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops today. The sale coincides with the 27th anniversary of the iconic blue hero as well as the debut of another game on Nintendo's Virtual Console: Mega Man Zero. The Game Boy Advance classic is now available on the Wii U eShop for $7.99. The "Mega Manniversary" sale hacks 50 percent off the price of six Mega Man games until Monday, December 22 at 11:59 a.m. ET (8:59 a.m. PT). On sale are the Game Boy versions of Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 4 for 3DS, each down to $1.49. As for Wii U, players can download NES games Mega Man 5 and Mega Man 6 for $2.49 each as well as Mega Man 7 for $3.99. Of course, kids these days may have troubles with these difficult retro platformers. [Image: Capcom]

Lest you worry that your battle-accompanying Felyne (or Palico, as Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate refers to them) fight beside you without armor recalling your favorite classic series, Capcom has revealed another aesthetic crossover for MH4U. Players will be able to forge replicas of the Blue Bomber's iconic armor for their Palico friends, as well as arm them with a weapon seemingly made from the skull of Rush, Mega Man's four-legged robotic sidekick. For those more keen on Tetsuya Nomura's legacy of character design, MH4U will also feature a pair of outfits designed by the longtime Final Fantasy contributor. The crimson-hued suit of armor seen in its debut image also bares resemblance to two images tweeted by Hidemi Matsuzuka, director of Square Enix's Play Arts Kai brand of figures. At the time of this writing, pricing and release details for the figure are absent from Matsuzuka's feed and the Play Arts Kai store. We do know, however, that fans can hunt down Mega Man apparel when MH4U lurks onto the 3DS in early 2015. [Image: Capcom]

Mega Man 7, a rare SNES game featuring Capcom's "Blue Bomber," is no longer quite so hard to find; it's waiting patiently in the eShop, so that you and every other Wii U owner can give it a spin. "Released somewhat late in the SNES cycle, Mega Man 7 somewhat slipped through the cracks during its initial release," Capcom community manager Brett Elston wrote on the company's blog, where he announced the release. There's more than a handful of Mega Man games available via Wii U now - Mega Man 1-7, Mega Man X and Mega Man: Battle Network to name a few. As for the number of evil robots defeated by the automaton hero, Mega Man 7 brings the number up to ... uh ... a lot. [Image: Capcom]

And hey, at least this way your neighbors will be hearing the full song. These volumes offer both NES and PS1 versions of some tracks, though not all are included in both styles. If your preferred Mega Man tracks do not fall in the above spectrum, there's still hope: Capcom Unity's Brelston notes that music from numerical games up to Mega Man 10 are planned to arrive "through the end of the year." Tired of browsing eBay listings for old Demon's Crest cartridges, hopelessly trying to find one that's less than $70? Well, close your auction tabs - Capcom Unity's Brelston shared a slate of 15 new NES, SNES and GBA games planned for the North American 3DS and Wii U Virtual Consoles. While Mega Man definitely dominates the schedule with Mega Man X3 and a re-introduction of the Megaman Battle Network series, Demon's Crest is also coming, as well as SNES RPG Breath of Fire and the the NES' Gargoyle's Quest 2, Street Fighter 2010 and Mighty Final Fight. The blog warns that Mega Man Zero 2, Mega Man Battle Network 2 and Mega Man Battle Network 3 "may not make 2014," but it's nice to know we'll see them on our TVs again without having to dig out our Game Boy Player. European fans will be catching up to the North American Mega May schedule as well, with Mega Man 2 - 5 and the Mega Man Xtreme series among the titles coming to the European 3DS and Wii U eShops. If there's a specific title you're crossing your fingers to see, there's a full list of the games and their respective platforms and regions they're launching in after the break. To whet the appetites of prospective players, developer Inti Creates has launched an official, English-language website for upcoming 3DS action-platformer Azure Striker: Gunvolt. If the site reminds you of any number of Mega Man games, that's to be expected. Azure Striker: Gunvolt is being developed by much of the same team responsible for Mega Man spiritual successor Mighty No. 9, and Mega Man character designer Keiji Inafune serves as the game's director. Likewise, both games center on heroic, idealistic young men battling foes with agile jumps and projectile weapons while wearing almost exclusively blue clothing. We'd mention the similarities between Mega Man's "Blue Bomber" nickname and the "Azure Striker" of the title, but you get the idea. Unfortunately lacking from the newly-launched Azure Striker: Gunvolt website is a specific release date. Like our earlier report, the site is only willing to assign a nebulous "Summer 2014" window to the platformer's debut. [Image: Inti Creates]

Mega Man's adventures on Game Boy and Game Boy Color get their 3DS re-releases in May, almost a year after they were first announced. While Capcom's not been in any Rush to get the games onto the Virtual Console, the publisher is asking fans to vote on which they want first of Mega Man 2-5 (Dr Wily's Revenge hit the 3DS back in 2011) and Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2. The winner will be first out of the door on May 1. [Image: Capcom]

Coming down the runway we have what is sure to be Summer 2014's biggest hit: a lovely jacket based on the Capcom character Mega Man, complete with removable helme-- er, hood, as well as yellow zippers along the forearms to imitate the buster gauge. This powerful, retro raiment is from Volante Design, and will sell for $200 apiece. That is, if demand is high enough. Capcom has decreed that production on this jacket will be limited and based on the number of pre-orders received. Would-be wearers of the MegaJacket must defeat eight Robot Masters pre-order at least 200 men's cut hoodies and 100 women's cut hoodies by March 31. Otherwise it's back to the Start screen for this snazzy getup. [Image: Volante Design]

Japanese developer Inti Creates (Mega Man 9, Mega Man ZX) will launch its latest game Azure Striker: Gunvolt via the Nintendo 3DS eShop this summer, with Mega Man character designer Keiji Inafune serving as executive producer. Azure Striker: Gunvolt is a 2D side-scrolling action game starring a character with psychic powers, allowing him to harness the power of lightning for ranged attacks and other special abilities. The game shares much of its creative staff with Mighty No. 9, a Mega Man spiritual successor funded via Kickstarter last year. Azure Striker: Gunvolt will premiere in the Japanese eShop (as Armed Striker: Gunvolt) this summer. A North American release date has not been confirmed, though the game's official website notes that an ESRB rating is pending. [Image: Inti Creates / 4Gamer]

  • Abandoning Olympus: Mega Man's creator on going indie

Keiji Inafune's been making games for nearly 30 years. He's the man behind one of gaming's most iconic characters (Mega Man) and several huge franchises (Dead Rising, Onimusha). After 23 years working at Capcom, one of Japan's largest game publishers, he suddenly quit back in 2010. "Settling down means death for a creator. As long as you are a creator, you cannot settle down," he announced on his blog. Just six months after being appointed Capcom's Global Head of Production (overseeing the company's entire gaming catalog, from Resident Evil to Street Fighter), he quit. With that, he set off on his own and created two new companies: Comcept and Intercept. When we talked with Inafune last week at DICE 2014, he spoke of his plans for Comcept in detail. "I was a publisher for 20 years, so you'd be right in thinking I brought some ideas from there into Comcept," he said. That means, first and foremost, retaining ownership of IP. That's a major component of going with Kickstarter for the latest Comcept game, a Mega Man-esque action game titled Mighty No. 9. The project sailed past its target goal of $900K and took in $3.8 million. Without a publisher, of course.

  • Mega Man The Board Game Kickstarter concludes with $415K raised

The Mega Man board game Kickstarter ended over the weekend with a grand total raised of $415,041, mega blasting its original $70,000 goal into mega smithereens. That means backers who pledged $70 or more are due to receive the blue bomber's licensed venture onto tabletops sometime in October. That juggernaut-like funding means a ton of stretch goals were unlocked along the way, including one for fully colored game pieces in every box. Even though the Kickstarter's over, creator Jasco Games is keeping Paypal funding open, and that will go towards further stretch goals. There's no word yet on when non-backers can expect to find Mega Man: The Board Game powering up retail shelves.

Jasco Games has put together a new video explaining how its Mega Man board game operates. The 20-minute video takes viewers through basic turns in the game, which is officially licensed from Capcom. Mega Man The Board Game reached its $70,000 goal on Kickstarter rather quickly back in mid-December 2013, and earned more than $160,000 in its first 24 hours on the crowdfunding platform. The board game has 10 days left in its campaign to reach stretch goals like Time Man and Oil Man 12-card pack add-ons. The project is sitting at $294,712 in funding. Standard versions of the game, which start at $70, are expected to ship in October.
