Netflix's 'The Irishman' will open the New York Film Festival
Martin Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in a crime saga. If that weren't evidence enough Netflix is hoping for another major Oscars player with The Irishman, the movie will have a swanky world premiere when it opens the New York Film Festival September 27th.
Martin Scorsese to direct Netflix special on 'Second City Television'
Canada's Second City Television sketch comedy series is getting a retrospective, which will be directed by Martin Scorsese for Netflix, Variety reports. The series debuted in 1976 and ran for six seasons, featuring the likes of Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, John Candy and Rick Moranis. It was also nominated for over a dozen Emmys after NBC picked it up in 1981, winning its first in 1982 and another the following year.
Netflix reportedly snags Martin Scorsese's 'The Irishman'
Netflix is making another big movie splash, as IndieWire is the first to report that it's acquiring the rights to Martin Scorsese's $100 million+ gangster flick The Irishman. Reportedly in the works since at least 2010, the project is supposed to unite the legendary moviemaker with both Robert de Niro and Al Pacino. The big budget is apparently due to the use of Benjamin Button-style special effects to make its actors appear younger for certain scenes. The story is adapted from the nonfiction book I Heard You Paint Houses, about mob hitman Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran. A deal for Paramount to release the movie apparently fell through -- possibly related to a poor opening for the Scorsese/Paramount produced Silence -- opening the door for Netflix to flex its deep pockets and worldwide release capability. Despite those issues, judging by the names attached -- which are said to also include Joe Pesci -- The Irishman is a good bet to stay far away from the MST3K screen.
Martin Scorsese voices support for preserving the future of cinema on film
Saving celluloid film is a big deal for many reasons, and the movement recently got another major voice in its corner. Legendary director Martin Scorsese (Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino) has come out in support of the Hollywood coalition to save Kodak. In a statement spotted by First Showing, Scorsese notes the advantages of shooting digitally (like lighter and cheaper cameras), but fervently details why film needs to continue to exist, likening the medium to paintings. "Would anyone dream of telling young artists to throw away their paints and canvases because iPads are so much easier to carry? Of course not."

Siri celebrity ad series continues with Martin Scorsese
You've seen Siri chat with Zooey Deschanel, Samuel L. Jackson and John Malkovich; now she's helping out a genuine New York film auteur in the latest commercial for the iPhone 4S. Martin Scorsese stars in this ad, and delivers his trademark rapid-fire patter from the back of a taxicab. (Scorsese? Taxi Driver? Get it?) This isn't Scorsese's first go-round as pitchman, either; he starred in a memorable American Express ad that mocked his directorial perfectionist tendencies. The ad is embedded below. Thanks Sean
'Hugo' director Martin Scorsese, cast explain the advantages of shooting movies in 3D (video)
We'll have to wait until this weekend to find out if Martin Scorsese's Hugo takes home any hardware from the Academy Awards, but we've got an early preview of one the Blu-ray 3D release's special features right here. Press play to hear the director explain why 3D affects the storytelling by bringing in qualities usually found in the theater to film, as well as comments from actors Christopher Lee and Sascha Baron Cohen. Scorsese explains "We see in 3D, we see in space... most of us do. Space is part of our lives. It means something. I think, for the individual person who has a vision of telling a story through images, how that person uses space -- that extra element, that extra dimension -- to tell a story is very, very important." Adapted from a book inspired by filmmaker Georges Méliès, the movie hits stores February 28th -- check out the trailer after the break.
Martin Scorsese's 'Hugo' Blu-ray 3D set for release February 28th -- 3D haters beware
Considering that Hugo was a flick capable of earning 4 out of 4 stars from noted 3D hater Roger Ebert, it will be interesting to see how it's received upon its home release February 28th. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and currently rocking a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the fantasy tale of a boy who crosses paths with legendary filmmaker Georges Méliès in 1930s Paris may be the best example yet of how an artist can make use of the effect. The two hour six minute flick will be available in Blu-ray 3D combo pack, and 2D Blu-ray editions, with a 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack and special featurettes on the making of the film and the real magician/director who inspired the story.The release date is two days after the Academy Awards, and if this flick can snag Best Picture or Best Director it could become a turning point for 3D. New 3D movies are already on deck from other high-profile directors like Ridley Scott (Alien prequel Prometheus) and Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby), while big budget conversions like Star Wars -- coming to theaters next week -- and already-sold-out-for-Valentines Day Titanic test the waters for older movies. Add in sports broadcasts planned including UFC 143 tonight and the London Olympics in the summer, and 2012 is shaping up to be an especially rough year for 3D haters -- you have our deepest sympathies. The Canon Hollywood event is tomorrow -- get your liveblog here at 6PM ET!
Canon has been incredibly tight-lipped about its upcoming announcement, with only a few vague details leaking out since the event was announced in September. What we do know is that the imaging company plans to unveil a product that represents a "commitment to play a larger role in the film and television community," and that Martin Scorsese will be on hand -- and we assume he's not there to announce that Sinatra will be shot exclusively with the 5D Mark II. Curiously, Red has scheduled an event for tomorrow evening as well, just a few blocks away from the Canon venue. We'll be coming to you live from Hollywood tomorrow evening, and if the hype is any indication, legacy cinema camera manufacturers have but a few hours left of industry domination. Taxi Driver comes to Blu-ray for its 35th Anniversary April 5th
Yet another classic flick finally has a Blu-ray release date now that Sony Pictures has announced Taxi Driver will be released April 5th. There's plenty of extras in store, with the inclusion of a commentary by the director Martin Scorsese and the writer Paul Schrader recorded in 1986 by the Criterion Collection for the Laserdisc, and an exclusive "Script to Screen" feature that scrolls the original script along with stage notes onscreen as the movie plays and points out the differences. Along with a 5.1 audio track, the picture has been remastered in 4K from the original and approved by both the cinematographer and director for this release. It's hard to find anything missing from this release of an iconic film starring Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster, check the press release after the break for all the details.

Have you always wanted to go to Blu-con but never made it? Us either, but our friends at HD Nation did and shot some great HD footage which includes some interesting tidbits about transferring movies to Blu-ray. The highlight is listening to Martin Scorsese talk excitedly about transferring classics to Blu-ray, where he discusses things like the factors that influence him to modify audio and video. A great example is where he talks about upgrading the mono audio from Taxi Driver by going back to the original stereo score and mono dialog and remastering for the first time ever. So if you always wondered why some get so excited about seeing classics on Blu-ray, or you just can't get enough Blu-ray, don't hesitate to check it out.
The Departed: 'Made by a Mac' gets new meaning
The Departed finally netted Martin Scorsese an Academy Award that many felt was long overdue. I personally haven't seen it yet (I know, I know), but the film has just become notable for another reason: Scorsese used iChat to direct one of its final shots. As the monstrous Macenstein tells the summarized story from a Blackmagic Design case study on the film, filming had wrapped in LA, but Scorsese called for a re-shoot of one scene. The only problem was: he was in NY, and the crew was still in LA. The solution? The crew set up a Mac and "aimed iChat at the video tap on the camera" so Scorsese could view the action in NY (note the interesting use of calling the iSight + iChat setup as simply 'iChat'). A microphone and speaker system were also set up so Scorsese could call the shots as he was viewing footage in real time.[via digg]
