The electronics giant just unveiled another curved QLED display, the world's first with Thunderbolt 3, which should pique the interest of MacBook Pro users. It's officially called the CJ791, which doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, and also features 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, a wide 21:9 aspect ratio and a four-millisecond response time.

With less than a week to go until its release, more details are emerging about the Xbox One X. We've known all along that Microsoft's all-powerful console would output at native 4K on a 4K TV or display. And, if a 1080p screen was connected it would supersample games -- rendering them at a higher resolution before dropping them back down to 1080p. But, what about all the gamers with 1440p monitors? If you thought your display would end up with the same scaled-down image, you're wrong. According to Xbox group program manager Kevin Gammill, the console will output to native 1440p on a supported monitor. So, you can stop fretting about the picture getting upscaled from 1080p.

It might surprise you to learn that Dell is one of the best monitor makers around. At E3 today, the company announced that it's taking its display expertise deeper into the gaming arena with the launch of new Alienware monitors. They sport the brand's more elaborate aesthetic, but most importantly, they pack in fast refresh rates and support for either NVIDA's G-SYNC technology or AMD's Freesync (which reduces image tearing and choppinesss). Additionally, Alienware is launching a new suite of accessories, and it's bringing Intel and AMD's most powerful CPUs to its flagship Area 51 desktop.

After reports of the monitor becoming unstable, if not unusable, when in close company -- under two meters away -- to WiFi routers. It's a difficult issue to resolve if your router is already close to your internet pipeline. If Microsoft's Surface Studio proved anything, it's that companies are less afraid to break with desktop traditions these days. In that vein, Dell introduced the Canvas today at CES, a sprawling 27-inch touchscreen device that's meant to take on Wacom's devices for digital artists. It's unlike anything we've seen from Dell so far, and it's yet another reminder that there's still plenty of room for innovation on the desktop front.

Dell is hoping to turn some heads at CES with the 27 Ultrathin, which features an impressively slim 6.9mm edge. Instead of having most of its hardware sitting behind the screen, Dell moved all of that stuff down to the base, which makes the monitor seem almost like an all-in-one machine at first.

Samsung has revealed the CH711, a curved quantum dot monitor built "with gamers in mind." It also appears to be targeting Mac users and designers with the model, judging by the sharp-looking white color scheme and marketing shots (above). The displays, in 27- and 31.5-inch sizes, feature 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, a pronounced 1,800R curvature, 178-degree viewing angle and 125 percent of sRGB coverage. Cables are hidden in the stand, which also lets you flip the monitor to a vertical position, though the heavy curve might make that format a bit awkward.

Walking through the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, one thing becomes abundantly clear. Curved displays are apparently all the rage. They're everywhere and include everything from Ultra-HDTVs, monitors and even smartphones. Much like 3D televisions of the past, it seems like every hardware manufacturer got together and said, "This is exactly what consumers need!" The thing is, I've yet to meet anyone who has one. Are they the real deal? Head over to the Engadget forums and share your thoughts!

  • Dell is the latest company to unveil a curved monitor

It's official: Curved monitors are now a thing. So far this week, HP has unveiled one and Samsung said it plans to have nine on sale by the end of the year, and now Dell is coming out with something similar. The UltraSharp 34 (aka the U3415W) was first teased last summer and is going on sale this week, making it not the first, but one of the first curved monitors to hit the market. For the money, it brings 3,440 x 1,440 screen resolution and a wide 21:9 aspect ratio -- pretty standard for curved displays like these, which aim to eliminate the need for a dual- or multi-monitor setup. Around the edges, you'll find HDMI and DisplayPorts, along with dual nine-watt speakers, a spec that appears to be aimed mostly at gamers. Look for it on January 8th, two days from now, for $1,200. That's a lofty price for a display, but then again, flagship monitors with keywords like "curved" and "WQHD" never come cheap.

HP just announced a boatload of new monitors here at CES and impressively, they seem to combine every big tech buzzword from the past few years. On the one hand, the company is showing off a pair of curved displays, which we already know are going to be huge at this year's show. Meanwhile, the company also unveiled its first 4K monitors, available in two sizes, along with its inaugural 5K model. Finally, HP is showing off a virtual reality display that works with 3D glasses, of all things -- a nice throwback to CES 2010.

As you've probably read by now, LG's keen on tipping its hand ahead of our arrival in Las Vegas for CES. This year is no different, and with today's news the company focuses on monitors. First up, LG has a 21:9 display with AMD's FreeSync tech in order to keep things smooth during intense gaming sessions. In fact, the company says it's the first to do so on an ultra wide option. The added feature "guarantees the smoothest and most seamless gaming experience, generating fluid motion without any loss of frame rate," for those looking to upgrade any current setup. The 34UM67 (pictured above) also has a Black Stabilizer to illuminate dark scenery and a Dynamic Active Sync mode that keeps input lag to a minimum. Of course, you'll need to be sure your favorite title supports 21:9 resolution, but games like Battlefield 4 and World of Warcraft already do. For folks not looking for a gaming-specific display, there will be a couple more 21:9 options shown off in the desert.

  • 4K, gaming and a tale of two monitors

Unlike most gadgets and peripherals, our computer monitors tend to stay with us for a good chunk of time. My current 23-incher has been with me since the days of my Palm Centro. So when it comes to shopping for a new display, it certainly pays to know what you want out of it. Are you heavily into gaming and need a monitor with crazy-high refresh rates? Would you rather have as big a screen as possible for all those windows you have open every day? I recently spent a month with two of AOC's latest models: a 24-incher with NVIDIA G-Sync support for serious gaming, and a 4K 28-inch display that puts a premium on pixels. Could either one convince me to let go of my trusty Viewsonic?

A wise man once told me that for every additional monitor on your desk, your productivity is cut in half. If that's true, then nobody is getting any work done in this office. I'm all for having an obnoxious amount of screen real estate at your disposal, but this might be pushing things a bit. Bonus points for the wallpaper which seems to fit perfectly in each window, but the question remains: How many monitors is too many? [Photo credit: Blakespot]

What can you do with 24 inches of Jelly Bean that you can't do with 10? Manufacturers like Acer, Asus and ViewSonic have been building oversized Android-powered devices for a couple years now; I was determined to find out why, so I spent a few weeks with AOC's own all-in-one. The hybrid external monitor will run you $370 on Amazon -- more than twice what you'll pay for a comparable 1080p screen -- but this pricier model adds stock Android 4.2.2 with a touchscreen interface. With the tap of a button, the integrated quad-core processor and eight gigs of storage spring into action, effectively converting this otherwise ordinary monitor into a complete Android-powered machine. There's even an integrated 720p webcam, and with stock Jelly Bean on board, you can install whatever apps you'd like from Google Play.

Now that Samsung's shown us the GS5, Gear 2 smartwatch and its latest Chromebook, it's time for the company's lesser-known product teams to come out of the woodwork. Next up: the display division, which today introduced three new models for 2014, including one with a billion-color, 3,840 x 2,160 screen. That would be the beaut you see above, the 28-inch UD590, which is up for pre-order for $700. In addition to that stunner of a display, it does Picture-in-Picture, with no downgrading in resolution as you move to a smaller frame. There's also a dual-screen feature called Picture-by-Picture, which you could theoretically use for split-screen gaming, even though this was really designed with creative pros in mind. Design-wise, it's fashioned out of metal, with thin bezels and a T-shaped stand that leaves room for speakers and other items you might have on your desk. Around back, you'll find a single DisplayPort, along with two HDMI 1.4 sockets for outputting 4K.
