  • Mutant Mudds dev's Xeodrifter blasts off in first trailer

Developer Renegade Kid mixes a dash of Metroid with its Mutant Mudds formula in its latest project Xeodrifter, shown in action for the first time in the trailer above. Xeodrifter marries Metroid-style alien environments and exploration with Mutant Mudds' signature background-hopping mechanics, challenging players to explore multiple side-scrolling planes as they plumb nearby planets for crucial supplies and ability upgrades. The trailer above shows off a dash mechanic similar to Super Metroid's, and suggests that environments will hide plenty of hidden goodies for players to discover. Xeodrifter is slated to launch exclusively in the 3DS eShop. A release date is not yet known. [Video: Renegade Kid]

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has announced that development on Treasurenauts is now on hiatus so that the studio can instead focus on Xeodrifter, an exploratory platformer set in deep space. "I am a huge fan of Super Metroid, Metroid: Zero Mission, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and have always wanted to develop a game in that sub-genre," Watsham writes in a Go Nintendo-exclusive developer's diary. "The day finally came where the desire to develop it got too strong and I just had to act on it. Xeodrifter was born." According to Watsham, players take the role of an "interstellar drifter" attempting to explore desolate planets for the resources necessary to fix their ship. Of course, there are aliens that will need blasting and numerous power-ups and secrets areas to discover all within a labyrinthine, color-coded map, so despite Watsham's antipathy toward the "Metroidvania" descriptor, he admits it really is the most succinct way to describe Xeodrifter. Though Watsham offers no release date or even vague window for when Xeodrifter might debut, he plans to keep fans updated on the studio's progress via a series of weekly developer diaries at Go Nintendo. • Mutant Mudds updated on 3DS with Deluxe version's content

Considering Mutant Mudds reached the 3DS eShop in early 2012, it's possible you gathered every last one of its golden diamonds months ago. That no longer means you've seen all it has to offer though, thanks to this week's free update, which adds 20 ghost levels, optional checkpoints and hidden characters that are also found in the Deluxe edition of the game. If handhelds aren't your style, there's always the Wii U, PC or crossbuy-compatible PS3 versions to consider. Even if the extra content hasn't curbed your craving for challenging platformers, Mutant Mudds will eventually get a sequel, though developer Renegade Kid stopped working on it last December to focus on finishing Treasurenaughts. At the time, studio co-founder Jools Watsham explained the team felt it would be "healthier/better for us to develop a new 2D platform game in between Mutant Mudds and Mutant Mudds 2 to maintain perspective on what Mutant Mudds 2 needs to be." You can remove even the muddiest stains thanks to Mutant Mudds Deluxe, starting at the low price of $0 for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The dirt-destroying 2D platformer will join the North American Instant Game Collection when the PS Store updates tomorrow. Just to note, Sony specifies the Plus game for Vita, but Mutant Mudds Deluxe is cross-buy with a PS3 version. It's unclear if a Plus download will unlock both versions, but if you are getting it for Plus you'll need to grab it on Vita rather than PS3. Next Tuesday will see July's PS Plus offerings join the service, and they'll all arrive in one great big clump of freebies. As Sony revealed last month, from now on two PS4, two PS3 and two Vita games will be available on the first Tuesday of each month, and will remain so until the first Tuesday of the following month. Sony is adjusting its Instant Game Collection schedule for PlayStation Plus starting in July, promising to dish out six free games per month. The games will be divided evenly among its three active platforms, two for each of PS4, PS3 and Vita, and will all debut on the first Tuesday of every month, lasting until the first Tuesday of the following month. Current freebies on PS Plus that had a "nice, long stint" will be gradually phased out in the coming weeks. The House of PlayStation also announced the six games that will be free for the month of June, starting next Tuesday. PS4 owners will have access to Trine 2: Complete Story and PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate, PS3 players can download NBA 2K14 and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time and Vita owners will get Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe for the month. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is Cross-Buy eligible, so Vita owners will be able to download that game as well. [Image: Sony]

  • The first dusty, scary gameplay of Renegade Kid's Cult County

This is the "pre-pre-pre-alpha" video of Cult County, the spooky survival game from Dementium series developer Renegade Kid. Developer Jools Watsham walks viewers through the first look at gameplay for Cult County, making sure to note how the dust, wind and creepy messages painted across signs contribute to the atmosphere. In the game, you return to their childhood hometown in rural west Texas, only to find a new, cultish group has moved into town, Father Pearce has committed suicide, and a storm is rolling in. As the dust storm gathers, you begin to see shadowy figures on the edges of your vision. It's first-person with melee and firearm combat, though so far the main weapon we've seen is a big, red wrench. Renegade Kid is the studio behind Mutant Mudds and Moon, along with DS horror games Dementium and Dementium 2. It's looking for $580,000 on Kickstarter, and with 21 days left, it's raised $32,000. Cult County is planned for PC, Mac, Linux, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and Vita. [Image: Renegade Kid]

  • Mutant Mudds Deluxe does better on Wii U than PSN and Steam, developer says

Since making Mutant Mudds Deluxe, an improved version of platformer Mutant Mudds, available on Wii U, Steam and PSN last year, developer Renegade Kid has seen the best sales on Nintendo's console - even better than PSN and Steam combined. Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham revealed the news on Twitter earlier this week. Watsham added in a follow-up tweet that 3DS has undoubtedly been the most popular platform for Mutant Mudds Deluxe, which was unlocked as a free content download on 3DS in the original Mutant Mudds game. The varying length of availability on each platform is worth noting when comparing sales. Mutant Mudds Deluxe arrived first on 3DS in early 2012, followed by ports to PC and iOS later in the year. A Steam version was made available last November, then the PS3 and PS Vita versions launched in December. Watsham didn't say where iOS fits into all of this. Renegade Kid is currently working on a few different games for 3DS, including atmospheric first-person shooter Moon Chronicles, loot-focused platformer Treasurenauts and horror FPS Cult County. Renegade Kid has also promised a sequel to Mutant Mudds, but development is currently on hold until work on Treasurenauts has been completed.

Thanks to the onslaught of cost-effective game bundles courtesy of the folks at Indie Royale, Humble Bundle and Bundle Stars, players have plenty of options to pass the time at a low price. Blink Bundle is now entering that space by appeasing game developers interested in adding their games to discounted collections: CEO Jim Yildirim told Joystiq via email that Blink offers the "highest dev cut out of any of the major bundles." Blink Bundle is currently offering a "Something for Everyone Bundle," which includes Steam games Gnomoria, Sideway New York, Archon Classic and Light of Altair in addition to an as-yet-unknown bonus game for a minimum payment of $1.99. Those that pay $4.99 or more for the bundle also receive Blockland, Eldritch, Lilly Looking Through, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, Influx and Hero of the Kingdom, as well as another unnamed bonus game. The two bonus games will "unlock" on Thursday, at which point both price tiers will increase by $1. The bundle will be available until Thursday, February 13. [Image: Blink Bundle]

Renegade Kid's plane-hopping platformer Mutant Mudds Deluxe will debut for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on December 17 as a Cross-Buy release, studio co-founder Jools Watsham announced. The PSN version of Mutant Mudds Deluxe will be priced at $9.99, and includes Cross-Save functionality across both platforms. Players in Europe will need to wait a little longer before joining the fight against the Mudds, however, as Watsham notes that "the cost and logistical hassle" of age-rating submissions has delayed the game's European launch on PSN and the Wii U eShop. Watsham additionally revealed that work on the upcoming sequel Mutant Mudds 2 has been put on hold while the team finishes up work on its current project, Treasurenauts. "We feel that it is healthier/better for us to develop a new 2D platform game in between Mutant Mudds and Mutant Mudds 2 to maintain perspective on what Mutant Mudds 2 needs to be," he explained. Treasurenauts has been delayed to next year, and a release date for Mutant Mudds 2 has not been announced. Series fans have a new batch of content to look forward to, however, as Watsham revealed that the original Nintendo 3DS version of Mutant Mudds will receive a free update "sometime in 2014."

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham announced that the studio's Nintendo 3DS platformer Treasurenauts will miss its previously announced December release date, and is now set to launch in the eShop in the first quarter of next year. "Don't worry, there's nothing wrong," Watsham assures. "The game means a lot to us, and we want to do it right. We need more time to make it the game we want it to be. [...] Sorry for the delay, but as an independent developer we rely on the success and revenue generated from each of our self-published games. More time = better game = better sales (hopefully)." Watsham notes that two new Renegade Kid-developed projects will be announced next year, including an unnamed 3DS game set for release in mid-2014. These two games will be developed alongside the studio's current projects, which include the survival horror game Cult County and a sequel to its plane-shifting platformer Mutant Mudds.

Mutant Mudds Deluxe will hit Steam for PC on November 21 (that's this week!), pushed up from its previous launch date of December 5. Developer Jools Watsham says it's coming out early "because it is ready! Happy holidays!" That's a good enough reason for us. Mutant Mudds launched on the 3DS eShop in early 2012, and since then it's come to Windows and iOS, and it added the Deluxe moniker to arrive on Wii U. Mutant Mudds Deluxe is set to hit PS3 and Vita as a Cross-Buy game this holiday season.

Deluxe is an expansion of the retro-flavored platformer that was originally released on the 3DS eShop. It carries 80 levels that allow players to jump between three 2D playing fields while using powerups and hunting for passages to secret levels. Once it launches, Deluxe will be available to Windows users on Steam.

Renegade Kid is "aiming for Christmas" to launch Mutant Mudds Deluxe on PS3 and Vita, co-founder Jools Watsham recently tweeted. The platformer will be Cross-Buy and Cross-Save compatible, so those that own both systems will only need to purchase one copy of the game to both access it and transfer their save files to the other console. Mutant Mudds first launched on the 3DS eShop in January 2012, and has players blasting muddy monsters as a boy named Max, a kid armed with a water gun and a jetpack. Watsham also noted that he is currently designing a "secret project" codenamed CGC alongside his work on the Mutant Mudds ports and Renegade Kid's Treasurenauts, another platformer that's slated to arrive on the 3DS eShop in December.

Indie developer Renegade Kid announced that its depth-hopping platformer, Mutant Mudds Deluxe, will launch in the Wii U eShop on June 13. Mutant Mudds Deluxe includes all content from the previously released 3DS and PC versions of Mutant Mudds, along with 20 Wii U-exclusive levels in which players must collect new-power ups in order to bust enemy ghosts. Judging from the gameplay footage above, there seems to be a new checkpointing system, which should help players progress through some of the lengthier levels. The post-game "Granny" levels (previously released as DLC for the 3DS and PC versions) also make a return, if you're up for a CGA-tinted challenge. Mutant Mudds Deluxe will include over 80 levels in all when it premieres next month.

Watsham says the game is currently being polished, and that it should be submitted to Nintendo for release later on this week. The Deluxe version of the retro platformer will be playable directly on the Wii U's tablet controller, and will feature both the add-on content from the main game and new levels to play. If the game is submitted this week as planned, it should appear on the eShop soon after.

Mutant Mudds on Wii U has a launch plan for Q1 2013, bringing unique content to the console, Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham tweets."Well, it's going to have even more unique content for a start! And, out Q1 2013," he says.Watsham outed something called Mutant Mudds Deluxe on Wii U in September, giving us a single screenshot and nothing else, the tease. Mutant Mudds is already available for the 3DS eShop and PC, with an iOS version due this week. This could be one to look out for after getting a Wii U "for your family" (it's for you; don't lie) for the holidays, since we found the 3DS version to be worthwhile and "really frustratingly/enjoyably hard in the Mega Man tradition."

Mutant Mudds is coming to iOS on December 6. All 60 levels of Mutant Mudds, including the recently added unlockable stages, will be released on the App Store for 99 cents. The game is already available on 3DS and PC, with a Wii U version coming later as well.We asked Renegade Kid creative director Jools Watsham about the controls – the biggest concern of any iOS port. "I am really pleased with how the virtual controls have worked out," he reassured us. "I had played a lot of platformers with virtual controls, and not enjoyed most of them due to the controls. I never want to look down at the controls and have found myself missing the buttons due to thumb drift."The simple solution, Watsham said, was to make the touch zones for the controls larger than the controls actually appear on screen. "This might sound like an overly simplified solution, but I have found that it helps tremendously with the inevitable sloppy thumb slapping that happens with virtual controls." In addition, the control positions are customizable. Renegade Kid also has plans to update the app to support external controllers like the 8-bitty."I have played through all 60 levels numerous times and found it to be a pleasurable experience," Watsham said. "If the controls did not work out as well as they did, we would not have released the game. Mutant Mudds means too much to me to send it out in a bad state."
