Marketplace for Windows Mobile website closing shop on July 15th, My Phone following suit
For most phone enthusiasts, hearing that Windows Mobile 6 is winding up operations is much like receiving news that your neighbor is moving -- when all along you'd thought the house was empty. And so it's with some remorse that we announce the Windows Marketplace for Mobile website will cease operations on July 15th -- the very day it will stop accepting app submissions from developers. Those hesitant to go Metro are given a reprieve, however, as the storefront will survive on your mobile device -- ready and willing to accept your impulse purchases. In related sadness, the My Phone sync service will meet a similar fate on August 7th, giving you until that date to migrate to SkyDrive. If you're forgetful, Microsoft plans to automatically save your contacts, calendars, text messages and photos to its Live service -- but it's on you to transition your video, music and documents. We know everybody makes the switch at their own pace, but once you're ready to part with that iPaq perhaps it will find a happy future on the streets of Hong Kong. Microsoft's beta My Phone service for Windows Mobile now free to all
Go 'n get it! Microsoft's My Phone service is now ready for all Windows Mobile users to test. The beta service syncs any Windows Mobile 6+ phone to Microsoft's 200MB per person cloud. That includes contacts, calendars, tasks, photos, text messages, music, videos, and more. In essence, anything on the My Phone website is on the phone and vice versa. We won't see Windows Mobile 6.5 or Windows Marketplace until the end of the year, but Microsoft isn't hoarding all the goodies -- the My Phone sync service went live in beta last night, and users who pre-registered got invites. Microsoft announces Windows Marketplace and My Phone for Windows Mobile
No big surprise here -- Microsoft just announced Windows Marketplace, a unified storefront for the over 20,000 Windows Mobile applications. As rumored, that means you'll be able to get apps directly from your phone, and Microsoft has also promised new and better tools for developers in the future. Also confirmed: My Phone, which will let you sync your phone to the cloud with access from the web. Sadly, we'll have to wait for all this stuff -- it's coming with Windows Mobile 6.5 which isn't due until later this year. We'll let you know more as soon as we find out, keep it locked!
Microsoft My Phone beta pre-registration now live
While Microsoft's official My Phone website still lacks that hopeful "sign in" button, the beta pre-registration is actually live and accepting enlistees from a different, albeit still Microsoft-hosted, address. It took our Hotmail credentials right away, reportedly putting us on the waiting list. If for some reason you wish to stay on the somewhat more virtuous path and wait for the main page to update, don't let us stop you. Microsoft confirms MyPhone, invite-only beta coming to MWC
Remember that alleged Microsoft MyPhone beta page that popped up on getskybox.com yesterday? It's back up now and being hosted under the company's official domain, with everything apparently intact except that tantalizing "Sign In" button. According to a statement from the gang at Redmond, a limited invite-only beta is in the cards, and more details on the syncing service formerly known as SkyBox are coming to Mobile World Congress later this month. As for the beta itself, the wording's a bit ambiguous here -- will we just be getting new details on the trial or will the signup actually launch then? Looks like we'll find out for sure in just over a week.
Microsoft's SkyBox site live, branded My Phone?
It appears that Microsoft may have its SkyBox beta sign-up site up and running in preparation for a Mobile World Congress unveiling -- except that it's not called SkyBox, it's called "My Phone" (even though the domain is getskybox.com -- go figure). The phone-to-cloud syncing service promises to make transferring contacts, appointments, tasks, photos, videos, music, text messages, and documents between Windows Mobile 6 (and above) phones a breeze, and even better, the service is free "at this time." If the details are accurate here, we can expect 200MB of online storage courtesy of your friends at Microsoft, but don't bother trying to sign up -- it craps out as soon as you try. Neonode N2 launches in Europe on Vodafone, Wind
Intelligently waiting until after the iPhone lived out its (first) 15 minutes of fame, Neonode has just now went and threw a launch party to celebrate the official debut of the Neonode N2. Yesterday, the firm went wild at the Babae Club in Athens, Greece as it celebrated with MyPhone (its distributor for south-eastern Europe) and announced that the handset would play nice with "operators such as Vodafone and Wind." Sadly, exact releases dates were obviously muddled through all the jumpin' and jivin' going on, but the N2 should be in "select shops in south-eastern Europe" very soon, with the rest of Europe and "other major markets" to follow suit shortly thereafter.[Thanks, Sleepless]
