We sort of get the feeling that anyone interested in NFL Head Coach 09 probably already picked it up in the special edition of Madden 09, but for those of you that haven't, there is a demo on Xbox Live Marketplace right now. The standalone version of the game is releasing next week, so if Madden isn't you're cup of tea, you might give the demo a whirl.Besides, armchair quarterbacking is too physically taxing. Armchair coaching is where it's at. What's new in Madden this year? What's different? Find out what's good (and what's not so good) in our Madden 09 Season Update.

Previously, it was announced that the Madden NFL 09 Collector's Edition would, among other goodies, exclusively include NFL Head Coach 09 as part of the bundle. And even though that hasn't changed, EA has changed their minds on how to approach Head Coach 09, now deciding to release it as a stand alone game as well. According to EA, "after listening to fans and the Madden NFL community" they decided to make Head Coach 09 its own retail game which is now set to release on September 2nd for $49.99. We never knew Head Coach fans were so passionate about seeing Tony Dungy on his own retail box.[Via Game Stooge]

Remember last month when EA mentioned that coaching simulator NFL Head Coach '09 would only be available as part of the Madden '09 Collector's Edition? Yeah, funny story about that -- it's not true. EA revealed in a press release today that the game will actually also be sold as a $49.99 standalone release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in time for the start of the new football season on Sept. 2.We're a little skeptical that U.S. gamers will be willing to shell out nearly $50 bucks for a coaching simulator -- remember, the 2006 original NFL Head Coach was budget priced at $20, and still got savaged in reviews. Then again, Europeans seem to go nuts for the similar Football Simulator series of soccer-management sims, so maybe North America is just behind the curve on this one. Then again again, maybe we Americans are just too discriminating to enjoy a game where you simply manage a sport rather than actively participating in it. We report, you work out your patriotic vitriol in the comments thread.

  • Head Coach '09 only available in Madden '09 Collector's Edition

One tiny little detail about NFL Head Coach '09 seems to have been buried at the bottom of EA's announcement yesterday regarding the "Collector's Edition" of Madden NFL '09. Turns out that Head Coach '09 is only available by purchasing the $90 special edition. Just to be clear: It won't be sold separately.Madden's Marketing Director, Christopher Erb, says the decision was not made out of fear that the game couldn't stand on its own, and explains it's a way for the company to "reduce the price and make it a bonus to our fans." He's got a point, if it was at retail the two games separated would cost $120, but given the tepid response of the original Head Coach and its niche factor, this may be the best way to move units. Erb believes those who play Head Coach are hardcore Madden fans anyway and the company may consider releasing it as a separate title if there's enough outcry.

  • Rumor: GameStop dates Prototype, Splinter Cell V, Sonic Unleashed, Rogue Warrior and more

One of our loyal X3F Army tipsters has outed himself as an employee of GameStop, but to make up for it he sent us a camera phone image of a few release dates. While you should take these dates with a grain of salt some of them are accurate, specifically Ninja Gaiden 2, Soul Calibur IV and Civilization Revolution.Fueling the fire of the Sega's Sonic Unleashed leak is a release date of November 4 for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2. EA's NFL Head Coach 09 is slated for a September 3 release and based on the release of the original in relation to Madden, the time frame seems accurate. A few titles we haven't heard much from are Bethesda Softworks' Rogue Warrior (November 10) and Edios Interactive's Shellshock 2: Blood Trails (September 1), which is being developed by the team at Rebellion.Other dates include Sierra's Prototype from Radical and the Xbox 360 exclusive Splinter Cell: Conviction from Ubisoft which are dated for October 21 and October 2 respectfully.Remember, pre-order focused retailers tend to guess-timate releases on a regular basis to structure their sales goals for the final two quarters of the year. However, some of the names on this list make us really glad we have a rumor category.[Thanks, Travisto]

EA announced today that Madden NFL 09, the 20th Anniversary of its exclusive NFL license-holding franchise, will touch down in stores August 12. The company states there'll also be a 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition of the game featuring Madden NFL 09 and NFL Head Coach 09, along with "an extensive library of exclusive bonus video content" for $90.So, let's make a Hail Mary pass and wish the best for Madden '09. Initial data on last year's Madden sales showed consumers weren't that into the series anymore. Maybe this'll be the year the franchise gets a major update bringing gamers in who don't just buy the series like sheep year after year ... stop laughing! One can dream, can't they?

During the dog days of summer in 2006, EA Sports released their first console sports management simulator to great success. That's commercial success, not critical. While NFL Head Coach was initially popular the game and it's many exploits turned many players off. Well, in a move that seems incomprehensible, EA waited a few years to work on a sequel and has just announced NFL Head Coach 2009.With two-time Super Bowl winner Tony Dungy, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, gracing the cover, the EA Tiburon developed title makes the jump to the Xbox 360 and PS3 with an expected summer release. We (Read: Just me, Xav) are actually pretty excited about playing a revamped version of NFL Head Coach. Let's just hope EA was actually working on the title and not investing in more 19-0 hat factories.
