Disney released its Q4 earnings on Thursday and, unsurprisingly, the entertainment juggernaut reported revenues in the billions thanks to strong performances from its media networks (ie its upcoming streaming service) and studio entertainment (ie its Marvel, Pixar, Nat Geo and Star Wars IPs).

The technology world moves so quickly, it's easy to forget what we've learned from the past. That's precisely what National Geographic is aiming to explore with Valley of the Boom, an upcoming series about the nineties dot-com era. Created by Matthew Carnahan (House of Lies) and executive-produced by Arianna Huffington, the show will chart the rise and fall of three startups: Netscape, which helped popularize web browsers; theglobe.com, an early social media site; and Pixelon, a video-streaming company that was famous for its over-the-top launch party (iBash '99!), only to crash and burn shortly after. Valley of the Boom isn't airing until January, but this week we had a chance to chat with Huffington about her vision for the series.

  • National Geographic's 'Mars' is like a SpaceX infomercial

Like a prequel to The Martian crossed with an educational documentary, National Geographic's Mars is an earnest attempt at inspiring a new generation about a manned mission to the red planet. But what's most intriguing is how much it puts Elon Musk's SpaceX front and center (which has already laid out its plans to get to Mars), even more so than work from NASA and other space agencies. It's a sign of the times: Our next step into the beyond will likely involve a benevolent billionaire as much as it does the cooperation of Earth's most technologically advanced countries.

Listen up, nature lovers -- you should seriously consider moving to the UK. We're hearing that National Geographic is gearing up to exclusively launch Nat Geo Wild HD on the Sky platform on April 1st, and it's reportedly being done as a response to growing demand (and growing ratings) for the SD version of Nat Geo Wild. Launch programs on the new channel will include Blue Whale Odyssey, Darwin's Lost Voyage and the second series of Strange Days on Planet Earth, narrated by Hollywood actor Ed Norton, and yes, the content will indeed be made available from day one on Sky Anytime, the operator's video-on-demand service.

National Geographic has been spreading its wings in foreign nations for some time, but now the outfit is broadening its reach in India by announcing that four new channels will soon be available in the ever-growing country. Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Adventure, Nat Geo Music and Nat Geo HD have all been approved for airing in India, though we aren't told what carriers will be picking 'em up. Suffice it to say, this is all the encouragement you need to start bugging your own operator to pick up the new foursome -- particularly that high-def iteration.[Via PTI News]

  • Bright House Networks adds National Geographic HD in at least one market

One of our favorite HD channels is finally starting to get some love from Bright House Networks as it was recently added to the line-up at channel 727 in the Tampa market. This is good news from BHN fans everywhere as well as Time Warner Cable (a Time Warner company just like Engadget), as San Antonio customers can also expect to see NatGeo show up in HD in that market very soon. We've come to expect BHN and TWC to add HD channels together since they team up in the attempt to get a better carriage deal. Unfortunatly for some customers, who haven't seen a new HD channels in their local TWC market in some time, can expect not to see this one as well. With the bandwidth challenged markets the only thing that can help them is SDV, which can't get their fast enough for some, or slow enough for others.
