If you want a classic NES gameplay experience on the Switch, be prepared to shell out $60. Nintendo announced new wireless NES controllers today as an exclusive for subscribers of the Switch's online service. From what we can tell from the Nintendo Direct presentation, they seem to be an accurate rendition of the classic console gamepads. But even though they charge on the Switch in dock mode, they don't work as Joy-Cons. (You can probably figure that out since they both have proper directional pads.) You can pre-order the Switch NES controllers on September 18th, and Nintendo says shipments will start in December. Naturally, they'll want to get these out by the holidays.

Nintendo just murdered Luigi during a livestream about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Killing beloved characters is the point of Smash Bros., after all, and Nintendo took the opportunity to add two more to the list: Simon and Richter Belmont, stars of the Castlevania series. Richter is an echo fighter, using the same moves as Simon but with a different skin and some custom animations. They'll both be in the game when it lands on Nintendo Switch on December 7th.

The full reveal of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the Switch capped off Nintendo's pre-recorded Direct presentation for E3. The first teaser for the game dropped back in March, a year after the new console released. While fans have been pumped for the next game in the venerable franchise, so has the pro community -- and their prayers have been answered, as the game will support the much-preferred GameCube controller.

The Switch has a new mecha property coming next year, announced at the top of today's Nintendo Direct -- Daemon X Machina. While easily mistaken for a new installment in the Xenoblade series, this is decidedly in the shooter genre like Armored Core, with humanoid mechs duking it out in open fields and city streets against even larger spider-like robots.

During the Nintendo Direct stream we also learned that Undertale ("the friendly RPG where nobody has to die" and one of our favorites from 2015) will come to the Switch "eventually." While that's great for fans of the game, it's also good news for developers and fans of other games built using the same GameMaker Studio 2 platform. If you're not familiar with the software, it's similar to other widely-used middleware like Unity, however this one is built for use by people who might not have programming or game creation experience. Other games built using versions of the tool include popular titles like Hyper Light Drifter, Hotline Miami and Spelunky.

Nintendo is giving you another chance to play Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker if you completely missed it on the Wii U. The gaming giant is releasing the puzzle game for the Switch and the 3DS -- it's even adding new levels and mechanics to amp it up for the new consoles. In the game, you play as Captain Toad in a platformer environment, but instead of being able to jump over and slide under obstacles, you'll have to create paths for the Captain.

Square Enix's gorgeously retro game, Octopath Traveler, is arriving on the Switch very soon. Nintendo has revealed on today's Direct stream that the game, developed by the same people behind the critically-acclaimed RPG series Bravely Default, will be available on July 13th. The game giant has also introduced two new characters you can play as: a merchant named Tressa, who can acquire new items from just about anyone, and Alfyn the apothecary, who has the ability to dig for more information than any other character.

Nintendo said that we'd get Mario Tennis Aces on the Switch this Spring, and now it looks like the company is stretching that deadline a bit. The game will actually land on June 22nd, one day after the season officially ends. We won't hold that against Nintendo too much though, because it looks to be a unique entry in the Mario Tennis franchise.

We last saw a new WarioWare title, Game & Wario, way back in 2013 on the Wii U. During today's Nintendo Direct the company finally ended that drought and announced WarioWare Gold for the 3DS. Yes, you read that right -- it's heading to Nintendo's eight-year-old handheld, which is still going strong even as the Wii U has been replaced by the Switch.

With today's Nintendo Direct stream, the company closed out by using Splatoon characters to reveal that a version of Super Smash Bros. will come out for Nintendo Switch in 2018. The year and the title, plus glimpses of Mario and Link are all we have to go on for now, but that should be enough for fans of the star-studded brawler to start making their holiday plans.

In the middle of last year, Activision released a remake triple-feature -- the first three Crash Bandicoot games arduously redone for PS4 and sold as the N. Sane Trilogy. But rumors started surfacing that the redux would be coming to another platform, and during a Nintendo Direct today, the console maker confirmed it: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is coming to the Switch.

Nintendo is ready to spill the beans about its upcoming Animal Crossing mobile game. On Wednesday at 11 PM Eastern / 8 PM Pacific, the company will hold one of its trademark Direct events where it'll spend 15 minutes talking about the upcoming life-sim and nothing else. Last time Nintendo mentioned the game, it was to announce a delay. In January, Nintendo said that the planned mobile incarnation would arrive sometime between this April and next March. Now we have two days to speculate exactly when Tom Nook will start negging us about our house's feng shui. Update (10/23): Well, it's Wednesday in Japan, and now Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has been officially announced. It's coming to iOS and Android in late November, but you can get all the details right here.

'Doom’ for the Nintendo Switch feels exactly like it’s supposed to

    by

    09.21.2017

When Nintendo announced the launch of the Switch by using footage from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it was a surprise -- but a reasonable one. Bethesda's open-world adventure game was beloved, but old enough that a port to Nintendo's new console seemed entirely reasonable. When the company announced that it was bringing the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and last year's Doom reboot to the Nintendo Switch, however, it gave us pause. Those games were made for more powerful platforms, like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It sounded ambitious, but if the early build I played of Doom is anything to go by, they might actually pull this off.

Project Octopath Traveler is stunning -- and tonight, Switch owners can try it out for themselves with a new demo. The game comes from Square Enix and the team behind lauded RPG series Bravely Default. Project Octopath Traveler is also an RPG filled with epic monsters and treacherous adventures, all in a hand-drawn, CGI, pixelated, shadow-filled world that developers have dubbed "HD-2D." Whatever it's called, the overall effect is fantastic.
