Live sports broadcasts in VR tend to be solitary affairs, but they're about to become decidedly more social. Now that the 2018-2019 NBA season is getting underway, NBA League Pass and NextVR have revealed that they're offering shared viewing through Oculus Venues. If there's a friend across the country who can't show up to watch a game in person, they can don a VR headset and enjoy that sense of camaraderie. You'll even unlock a team jersey for your avatar if you tune in, so you can rep your favorite squad whenever you like.

For the past couple of years now, Oculus and parent-company Facebook have been really pushing the concept of social VR. Oculus debuted Parties, a built-in voice chat app, and Rooms, a virtual hangout space, back in 2016, while Facebook launched its own social VR solution in the form of Facebook Spaces in 2017. Now, Oculus is ready to launch yet another social VR endeavor called Venues, which is a way to enjoy live performances in VR with your friends. Oh, and you'll likely be interacting with strangers as well.

Alongside the Go's launch today, Oculus also announced an updated version of Rooms, its app for hanging out with friends in VR. The new app sports a swankier design, and it also features Hasbro board games, which will really make it feel like you're relaxing in your living room. Boggle will be available this month, and Oculus says Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit will arrive in the future. As for other new features, you'll be able to customize your rooms environment, and you'll also have higher-quality avatars to customize.

Mark Zuckerberg wants virtual reality to be less isolating, so Facebook is working on "Venues." Think of them like VR social spaces where you can meet up with friends to watch concerts like the ones Live Nation is pumping out. Venues make a lot of sense when you consider Facebook's push for live video, sports and putting things like VR streams and 360-degree photos and video into the News Feed. Zuckerberg said that Venues will also play host to movie and TV premieres as well.
