The OnePlus 5 and 5T are finally getting Android Pie. The latest version of Google's operating system is being made available to the OnePlus handsets via an over-the-air update. The rollout started this morning and will make its way to most devices over the next couple days according to OnePlus.

The freshly announced OnePlus 6 is easily the company's best-looking device to date, but is it a worthy upgrade for those who are currently carrying a OnePlus 5 or 5T? Our upcoming review will have a more definitive answer, but for now, we can get a rough idea by numbers and specs alone. The most interesting part is perhaps the cameras: While the front camera has remained unchanged, the rear dual cameras saw a progressive upgrade over the three models, with the latest one finally regaining optical image stabilization. Of course, there are also several other notable tweaks here and there. Let's take a look.

If you live in North America and you'd like to buy a OnePlus 5T, well, sorry — you're out of luck. Not just temporarily, either — the startup confirmed to Engadget that it has sold every OnePlus 5T it made for the North American market, and well ahead of schedule to boot. Kyle Kiang, OnePlus's head of global marketing and general manager of North America, said the stock outage was due stronger-than-expected demand, and as a result, people on this continent will have to sit tight and wait for the company's next flagship phone to arrive.

OnePlus 5T will only play HD Netflix if you send it in for service

Good news: the OnePlus 5 and 5T can finally play Netflix in HD... if you're willing to go through a convoluted process. OnePlus has launched an update program to enable the higher-resolution video streaming, but the "security processes" involved in enabling HD require that you send your phone in. As it revolves around the WideVine copyright protection used to allow Netflix playback, OnePlus has to perform the update with a wired connection to an "authenticated PC" -- thanks, movie industry.

Were you disappointed that the OnePlus 5T launched with Android Nougat despite Oreo having launched weeks earlier? You can rectify that today, if you're willing to experiment. OnePlus has posted an open OxygenOS beta that brings Oreo's features to the 5T. You now have Android 8.0 staples like picture-in-picture viewing and autofill text. The launcher also has a few tweaks, including the merger of app shortcuts and icon options as well as the option of uploading brag-worthy photos to Shot on OnePlus.

OnePlus 5 will get the 5T's Face Unlock feature

The OnePlus 5T's other party trick (besides the tall screen) is Face Unlock: a quick glimpse at your phone is all it takes to sign in. But is it really worth buying just so you don't have to use a fingerprint reader? No -- and OnePlus knows it. Company chief Carl Pei has tweeted that Face Unlock will be available on the OnePlus 5. He hasn't given a time frame or said whether or not there will be any functional differences, but it's good news for anyone worried that the phone maker would purposefully hold back to drive 5T sales.

OnePlus 5T needs an update to play Netflix in HD

The OnePlus 5T is defined by its cinematic 18:9 screen, but don't expect to get the full effect while you're watching your favorite streaming service... at least, not yet. Owners have learned that the 5T and its OnePlus 5 ancestor can't play Netflix or Amazon Prime Video in HD, since they both lack the Widevine rights management certification need to play at anything beyond standard definition. Yes, your $500 pride and joy currently plays video at a lower resolution than phones costing half as much. Thankfully, there's a solution in the works.

    The best phones under $500

Phone makers are trying to outdo one another by racing to add new, advanced features to their flagships, but these tools are not equally useful. Who really needs Face ID, Animoji or eye-sensing authentication? Some of us just want a good, no-frills phone. Plus, not everyone can or wants to spend almost a thousand dollars on something we'll trade in after two years. For these people, there's a range of options from truly basic sub-$250 phones to more powerful mid-range devices that can be had for less than $500. The latter group is better described as aggressively priced flagships that can serve you almost as well as their costlier counterparts -- and there's now a decent selection to consider.

OnePlus 5T hands-on: A slightly bigger, slightly better flagship

The OnePlus 5 isn't that old, but it's already been replaced. The company just unveiled its new flagship smartphone at a launch event in Brooklyn, and it's understandably pumped about its new, almost-all-screen design. I've been playing with the 5T for a few days already, and it's a shaping up to be a powerful, pretty machine that's sure to make existing OnePlus 5 owners feel a little envious. If that's you, well, you don't need to feel too left out: In many ways, the 5T is still the same phone from earlier this year.

OnePlus 5T packs a tall screen and upgraded dual cameras for $499

After more than a few leaks and not-so-subtle teasers, the OnePlus 5T is official -- and it's at once everything you expected and a bit more. The centerpiece, as you've no doubt guessed, is the 6-inch, 18:9 ratio 2,160 x 1,080 AMOLED display. The fingerprint reader is now on the back as a result of the taller screen, but it means a larger canvas for your apps and videos in a device that's roughly the same size as its predecessor. It can auto-adapt to bright sunlight and other harsh conditions, and you can tune the display's colors for accuracy (such as DCI-P3 or sRGB) or vividness. And thankfully, the trendy tall display isn't the only improvement.

The 5T is an upgraded version of this year's surprisingly affordable OnePlus 5, and it's set to go on sale in North America and Europe on November 21st.

OnePlus confirms the 5T will keep the headphone jack

While the headphone jack on smartphones isn't an endangered species just yet, it's clearly falling out of favor -- and that's bound to make you nervous if you don't want to live the dongle lifestyle. You won't have that problem with the OnePlus 5T, at least. OnePlus has not only confirmed that the 5T is coming, but is boasting that its upcoming handset will keep the 3.5mm port that so many hold dear. It cites both usage habits (almost 80 percent of OnePlus users rely on 3.5mm headphones) and its own analysis. It didn't see much benefit from asking people to plug in to the USB-C port, so why remove it?

The OnePlus 5 might have just released earlier this year, but we're already waiting in anticipation for the OnePlus 5T, which is a slightly upgraded model. Now, we might have an idea of what it looks like. This morning, Evan Blass tweeted a picture of what is reportedly the top half of the smartphone.
