CE-Oh no he didn't!: Stephen Elop says 'Apple created Android,' the conditions necessary for its existence
Nokia's freshman CEO is speaking at the Open Mobile Summit right now. As expected, he's covering the same ol' ground, explaining why Nokia ditched Symbian and MeeGo to build the "third ecosystem" with Microsoft -- you know, after totally dominating the high-end smartphone market just three years ago. He's also being credited with the following quote: "Apple created Android, or at least created the conditions necessary for Android to come into being" We're on to you, Mr. Elop. It's a classic diversionary tactic. Get the one and two smartphone / tablet OS vendors squabbling and then execute a flanking maneuver while nobody's watching. Why else would the Nokia CEO make such an emotive claim? Unless it's true?
TAT's Dimension S3D is a user interface for stereoscopic TVs (video)
You can't quite see it without 3D glasses, of course, but this clock is actually sticking out of the screen -- one of several illustrious illusions in this latest concept interface from the dreamers at TAT, spotted at Open Mobile Summit 2010. Give that watch face a spin, and you'll find a working countdown timer on the back, or browse through icon-based music, weather and Twitter interfaces, a media browser and a Rubik's Cube that spins in 3D space. The firm's calling the setup Dimension S3D, though like most TAT concepts, it's not for sale in its present form -- the company hopes to license the underlying framework to TV manufacturers who want to build menus in 3D, and hopefully attract content providers to build 3D apps as well. TAT wasn't naming names, but said that two "major" TV manufacturers had already expressed interest in possibly signing up. HTC planning an Android tablet for women, TV addicts?
So it seems pretty likely that HTC will give us an Android tablet at some point, although any hard and fast details continue to elude us. Speaking at the Open Mobile Summit, however, HTC's VP of Europe, Dr. Florian Seiche, did give us a clue as to how things were headed: "Our study found women social networking while watching television was a likely use for tablets." We have to wonder if this so-called "Facebook and Cougar Town" demographic were what Jobs & Co, had in mind when they decided to go ahead with the iPad. If so, they were wise to keep the information to themselves.
Oh snap! Google, Symbian trade barbs at Open Mobile Summit
Nothing like a couple passive-aggressive keynote speeches and some spirited debate to get the blood pumping -- and with competition in the open mobile platform space more heated than it's ever been before, it was just a matter of time before these cats met up in a back alley brawl, Anchorman-style. That brawl came at San Francisco's Open Mobile Summit last week, where tensions boiled over into a series of subtle (and not-so-subtle) jabs between Google exec Rich Miner, Symbian veep Jerry Panagrossi, and Nokia's Mary McDowell. Pimping Android's security model, Miner came out swinging with accusations that Symbian's architecture leaves it with security flaws, a claim Panagrossi vigorously denied; interestingly, Larry Berkin of Access (yes, that Access) -- of all people -- stepped in to break up the fight and say Miner had it wrong. Panagrossi went on to suggest Android might be a niche platform, and... well, you can pretty much imagine that it went downhill from there. Drama![Image via I Can Has Cheezburger?, thanks Jota E.]
