Like most of tech culture, the mainstream gaming industry is constantly hungry for next-gen hardware, and for major studios like Epic Games, Blizzard and Ubisoft, there’s an ongoing competition to stay ahead. Last June, a small Japanese indie studio named Petit Depotto unveiled Gnosia -- a werewolf-style role-playing adventure -- on the aging PlayStation Vita, which Sony officially discontinued in March 2019. Adapted from the 1986 Russian social game Mafia, werewolf scenarios require ‘villagers’ to deduce the identity of a ‘werewolf’ hiding among them.

One does not simply get enough of Shuhei Yoshida, the head of Sony PlayStation's Worldwide Studios. So following our nice, long chat with him at E3 (seriously, go read it), we managed to get hold of him again in Hong Kong and picked his brain with more questions about Project Morpheus. These include the VR headset's final form (you're looking at it), its compatibility with other devices and whether it'll revive the now-defunct PlayStation Home. We also took the opportunity to ask about the challenges of bringing PlayStation games into China.

One of President Kaz Hirai's big "Sony One" projects was PlayStation Mobile, which offered games that worked on both PS Vita and Android devices. That dream of cross-platform synergy is now dead, as Sony has announced it will stop publishing all PS Mobile content July 15th. On September 10th the entire site will cease to exist, and previously purchased games will no longer be available for download. The shutdown only applies to PS Vita content, as Sony had already stopped publishing Android games for PlayStation Mobile last year. Regular, non-Android PlayStation Vita games are still available at the PlayStation Store.

"Sorry we're late!" Sony's Playstation 4 and Vita will enter China's marketplace on January 11th, 2015, over three months after the Xbox One arrived there. The consoles will cost 2,899 and 1,299 yuan respectively (about $470 and $210), considerably less than the Xbox One's 3,699 yuan sticker ($600 sans Kinect). Sony also revealed upcoming titles specifically for the Chinese market, in line with its commitment to provide "healthy games that are suitable to China's national conditions... as according to the relevant government policies." It's also working with a Chinese partner called OPCD and likely had to comply with government standards to smooth the way for Playstation devices. For nearly 12 years, consoles have been banned in the nation, though they're relatively easy to obtain on the gray market.

To celebrate 20 years of PlayStation, Sony unveiled a new retro-styled PS4 that just oozes nineties nostalgia. But what about the millions of us who already own a PlayStation 4? Don't worry, Sony has you covered too. If you head on over to the PlayStation Store, there's a new Anniversary theme that mimics the look and the startup sound of the PSone. The free pack is actually available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita and has just begun rolling out in Europe. Download, listen (there are a couple of other easter eggs) and enjoy.

  • Sony to refund some customers after misleading PS Vita ads

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Sony deceived consumers by falsely advertising the PlayStation Vita's "game-changing" features when the console launched in the US. And, perhaps in an effort to stay out of court, the electronics company has agreed and, more importantly, settled with the FTC. As a result, Sony will be providing a partial refund of $25 cash or credit, or a $50 voucher for select, as-of-yet-unnamed games and/or services, to people who bought its handheld console prior to June 1st, 2012. The FTC cites Sony's Cross-Platform Gaming, Cross-Save, Remote Play and 3G connectivity as the features used to mislead consumers, noting that some of these a) didn't work as advertised or b) were nowhere to be found.

Arcade-style shooter Resogun will receive a PlayStation Vita version, developer Housemarque confirmed via Twitter today. The Vita port will be handled by Climax Studios, which developed the PS4 and Vita versions of another Housemarque original, Dead Nation. While no release date for the Vita version was given, the developer noted that "more details on the port will soon be released by Sony." Resogun launched alongside the PS4 in November 2013 as a free download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The game's first major "Heroes" expansion arrived this past June and added new survival and demolition modes to the shooter. The DLC launched shortly after a free update for the game patched in a ship editor and local cooperative multiplayer options. [Image: Housemarque]

  • PlayStation TV launches stateside with last-minute compatibility changes

The PlayStation TV launches today in North America boasting compatibility with a large number of PSP, PS Vita, and PS minis games, but users at NeoGAF point out that a last-minute compatibility update renders several major titles unplayable on Sony's new hardware. Just prior to the system's stateside launch, Sony updated its PlayStation TV compatibility list, removing entries for notable PSP games like Twisted Metal: Head-On, Valkyria Chronicles 2, and WipeOut Pure. Several Konami-published PSone games are also no longer compatible with the PlayStation TV, including Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Suikoden. The lack of omitted games that begin with the letters A through L suggests that Sony may be sorting out cross-platform rights issues alphabetically. While SNK-published PS minis games like Time Soldiers and Vanguard didn't make the cut, fellow SNK Arcade Classics 0 ports like Athena and Guerrilla War remain listed, hinting that further compatibility updates may be in store. Positioned as a non-portable alternative to Sony's PS Vita system, the PlayStation TV plugs into any HDMI-equipped television and plays games and movies downloaded from the PlayStation Network. The system is available today as a $99.99 standalone package and bundled with a DualShock 3 controller and memory card for $139.99. [Video: Sony]

  • With the PlayStation TV, Sony's going after families with young kids

The PlayStation TV is a curious oddity. The $100 device, a rebranded Vita TV that's slated to launch in North America and Europe later this fall, is Sony's direct answer to the Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV streaming boxes currently flooding the market. It's also the only box of the bunch capable of offering a video game experience that goes beyond just casual gaming. In fact, the PlayStation TV's library of titles spans several platforms: the PS Vita, PSP, PS One, PS3 (via PS Now's cloud streaming) and PS4 over Remote Play. It'll also offer consumers the ability to stream video content. But with the PS4 occupying the top spot in the PlayStation totem pole, we have to wonder: Just who is the PlayStation TV for?

  • PS Vita TV coming to the West with a new name: PlayStation TV

PS Vita TV is coming to the West, Sony announced at E3 2014. The device that allows you to play Vita games on your TV will cost $99 standalone, or $139 for a bundle including a DualShock 3, an 8GB memory card, an HDMI cable and a digital voucher for a copy of The Lego Movie Video Game. Users will have access to 1,000 games at launch, which will be ... actually, we don't know, sadly. We do know, however, that it will connect to the PlayStation Now service, which enters public beta on July 31. Update: The PS Vita TV may be known by that nom de plume in Japan, but when it arrives stateside, it'll go by the slightly less-complicated-but-longer name "PlayStation TV," which is not to be confused with the PlayStation 3D Display.

  • Sony retires the decade-old PSP in Japan to make way for the Vita

It had a good run, but Sony has decided to bring the curtain down on the PlayStation Portable. The company has announced that June's shipment of the hardware will be the last in Japan, and local users looking to upgrade to the PS Vita can earn a $30 or $40 trade-in discount across the summer. The Verge is reporting that the handheld was quietly discontinued in North America back in January, and we'd assume that European sales of the ten-tear-old device will be next to face the chop. It looks as if Sony is now doing its best to push buyers toward the newly-resurgent PS Vita, which has ridden a wave of success kickstarted by indie titles like Hotline Miami.

Assuming you like to do more than just play games on your PlayStation Vita, the latest batch of media-centric apps available on Sony's handheld may be of interest. Crunchyroll, NHL GameCenter LIVE and Qello Concerts are now live on the PlayStation Store, catering for those with a taste for anime, sport and music. Sony also revealed that Hulu Plus and Redbox Instant apps will come to the Vita on March 25th, with fitness app Gaiam TV following later this spring. It's a nice boost for gamers who remain welded to their Vita, but the wide availability of smartphone and tablet apps means Sony is continually playing catchup.
