  • Phantasy Star AotI expansion set for XBLM release

Recently, SEGA announced that the new Phantasy Star Universe expansion, Ambition of the Illuminus, will be headed to the Xbox 360, but only via a download off the Xbox Live Marketplace. SEGA is setting the Ambition of the Illuminus expansion for a worldwide November 20th release onto the XBLM and it will be priced at 1600 Microsoft points, which is cheaper than the $39 PS2 / PC retail version. But know that you must own a copy of Phantasy Star Universe for the 360 to play the new downloadable expansion content. But then again, why would a person purchase an expansion pack without having the original game disc. That would just be silly, now wouldn't it?

  • Rumour: Bioware to showcase a PS3 exclusive at E3?

PSU is today reporting that the community director of Bioware has confirmed that they will be at E3. He states that they weren't happy to confirm their presence there until they "were sure that the cool stuff we're going to be showing there was set, ready and very, very cool."While it's clear that they will be showing Mass Effect and Sonic RPG at the expo, PSU is speculating that they will also be revealing a new PS3 exclusive. Their reasoning stems from a conversation with Richard Vogel, Bioware's Director of Operations, at the GDC, during which he mentioned to PSU that there was a game in development for the PS3. Unfortunately, no further details were able to be obtained.Checking the Bioware website, the "in development" games list shows a listing for a "new next generation game". We look forward to seeing if PSU's hunch is correct when E3 comes around.[Thanks Justin]

  • JSP Tech's 450-watt liquid-cooled power supply

These days, it's not difficult to find a cutting-edge hardware component with a liquid-cooled option, but streaming water through a power supply is a new one on us. Aside from the potential fire hazard implications, we're a bit stumped as to why a vanilla 450-watt power supply would actually need such superfluous cooling measures in place, but we can assume that this bad boy is whisper quiet until it springs a leak. Nevertheless, JSP Tech's interesting new PSU was spotted at Computex with a CPU cooling extension tackily attached to it, but we've no idea if or when this admittedly questionable device will ever hit the market.

  • New texting device for Phantasy Star. Why?

Chatpad be damned! You may have seen shots of the Blue Orb Texter device on Joystiq last year. Essentially, you plug your wired control into the Texter, plug the Texter into your Xbox 360, and your controller becomes a text input device ... of sorts. Applying colored labels to your controller, you input combinations of stick presses to produce different letters. If the charts above are any indication, it is exactly as difficult as it sounds. SEGA has taken it upon themselves to create a Phantasy Star Universe branded version of the device. It's the same device, although it has a spiffier label and comes with lots of PSU-related stickers and a code to redeem a free T-shirt. Though it is intended for use in PSU, it will work in any 360 interface that accepts USB keyboard inputs. Given that the 360 Chatpad will give players the same functionality with a simpler interface, we have to ask: why?If this question does not vex you as it does us, you may purchase the Texter for $39.95. Hit the "read" link to see a video of the Texter in action.

  • The Wall screenwriter interview over at PSU

The guys over at PSU have an exclusive interview with Vladimir Mamontov, screenwriter for Burut's upcoming game The Wall. If you haven't heard of it before, The Wall is a post-apocalyptic FPS being developed in Russia using the GameBryo engine (of Oblivion fame). The interview contains some interesting details regarding the game, despite most of the latter questions being answered with, essentially, 'no comment'. There's no word on details like the final resolution of the game, disc space requirements or release date. Apparently it's too early to say, despite being in production for almost a year. In fact, judging from all the things that are still in consideration for the game we wouldn't expect to see a release before the end of 2008. Interesting points which are discussed include Sixaxis support, weapon customisation and an intriguing story outline. The environment screens are fairly pretty, too. This game looks like it could potentially be something quite special. A second chance in case Bethesda end up ruining Fallout 3, perhaps? Nah. That'll never happen.Read the full interview over at PSU and let us know what you think of the game. Had you even heard of it before? We hadn't.[Thanks Justin!]

  • Want Phantasy Star? Have $10? Let's make a deal

Phantasy Star Universe isn't for everybody, but those looking for an addictive, Diablo-style dungeon crawler won't find much better on the Xbox 360. Of course, that fact is offset by the addition of monthly fees, which send many gamers running for the hills. If you've been wanting to try PSU but were scared off by monthly charges, then we may have a deal for you. Amazon is currently selling the game for the rock-bottom price of $9.99. Heck, at that price, you could buy the game and play it for 5 months before you exceeded the average price of a 360 game. Not a bad deal if you're looking for some Rappy-slaying action.Of course, the game does have a single player mode as well, so it's quite a bit of gaming for not a lot of scratch.Any takers?[Via Xbox 360 Rally]

  • Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus coming this fall

We've been hearing some details on it for a few months, now Sega has finally gotten around to announcing Phantasy Star Universe expansion Ambition of the Illuminus, and all we can say is wow ... that's really an impressive title. We're not all PSU fans here at Joystiq HQ, so the new missions, cities and enemies don't do a whole lot for most of us. But when we see a title like that, we sit up and take notice. That's not to say it doesn't seem like there's a lot of new stuff here for fans. You've got some new classes, as well as new weapon types like the Madoog, Shadoog and Whip. The expansion also adds new Photon Arts, which still sound suspiciously like the title of a Journey album. Speaking of titles: ... Ambition of the Illuminus ... yep, still awesome. There are also new facial features, hair styles and body types for your character, which is a good thing; if you're going to be playing a game with a title like that, you need to be looking fine. Those playing on Xbox 360 download the new stuff this fall, those on PC and PS2 will have to buy a standalone disc. We don't know how much any of that will cost, but what wouldn't you pay to be able to say aloud that you're playing Ambition of the Illuminus? Can you really put a price on that?

  • Belgian guy reviews 105 power supplies, teeters on insanity

Product reviews are typically a welcome nugget of knowledge when trying to make a critical purchasing decision, but we'd probably succumb to just picking a power supply at random before actually wading through 105 reviews to find out which one was king. While this could all very well be a completely impractical prank, Stéphane Charpentier of MatBe has apparently put just over one hundred PSUs on the testing bench in order to find out which is worth your cash, and he went through a variety of flavors and wattages to make sure the very one you were eying was thoughtfully included. Without getting into specifics, Akasa's Power80+ took home the gold in the nonmodular category, Antec's Neo HE notched first place in the modular realm, the Fortron Zen won in the fanless arena, Cooler Master's Real Power Pro ruled the "powerful" division, and Antec's Earthwatts proved the most "valuable." Of course, there's a good bit of detail surrounding the 100 other losers in the crowd, so if you're down with skimming through 140 pages of PSU reviews, the read link awaits your attention. The official Japanese website for the next chapter in the Phantasy Star world called Phantasy Star Universe: Ambitions of Illuminus has just launched with screenshots in hand. Thanks to PSO-World and the power of translation, we learn that they will be planning a public network trial for the game, but don't exactly detail when or how to sign up for it. So, you'll just have to be patient and possibly move to Japan. As it pertains to graphics ... it's nothing amazing, but you didn't expect Unreal Engine 3 quality models anyway, now did you? And for extra credit be more like Godfree and meticuously analyze each screenshot, because you might just learn something new. [Via Gamertag Radio]

The hopelessly addicted cast of PSO-World got their hands on the latest issue of Famitsu and with it the first solid details on Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of Illuminus. As the sequel to last years online RPG, Sega appears to be tweaking it to address the number one complaint amongst those who played the original PSU. Namely, it wasn't as good as Phantasy Star Online. While it won't bring back the gameplay of the original, Ambition of Illuminus will be adding new weapons and clothing that bring back the style of Phantasy Star Online. Entirely new weapon types will be joining the mix including photon whips and slicers, new stages and even a casino, run by the penguin-esque rappies. Now you Phantasy Star addicts can do your gambling and turn tricks all in the same place!

PSO World reports that a recent issue of Famitsu confirms new details regarding the expansion to Phantasy Star Universe. Entitled Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of Illuminus, the game is set to expand upon the original in many ways. First and foremost, several new weapon types have been revealed, including photon whips. The expansion will also include new weapons from familiar categories (many will be familiar to PSO fans) as well as new Photon Arts and SUV attacks. The game is set to feature new levels, enemies, clothing, and even a casino. Whether or not Ambition of Illuminus will have a single player story mode has yet to be determined. No other new details have been discovered at this time.Anyone out there play Phantasy Star Universe? Is it time for an expansion?[Via TeamXbox]

  • Thermaltake kicks out Quad GPU-ready power supplies

    02.15.2007

There's just nothing quite like the smell of four graphics cards burning through energy in the morning to get you amped for the day, and Thermaltake is making sure you've got the juice and the connectors to make it happen. While not quite as mighty as Ultra Products' 2,000-watt behemoth, the 1,200- and 1,000-watt Toughpower PSUs support both AMD and Intel rigs and boast a trio of six-pin PCI-E connectors, eight SATA and Molex ports, and both units claim the "world's first" tag by collectively being numero uno to include eight-pin PCI-E connectors. The backwards compatible ports allow gamers to hit up a bit of Quad SLI action on their own, and considering the massive power draw demanded by such cards, it's good to know you've got so much energy on tap for those graphically straining firefights. Although there's no pricing information available just yet, the W0133 / W0132 should be available soon, and if you're already considering throwing down for four high-end GPUs, we highly doubt cashflow is of primary concern.[Via FarEastGizmos]Read - Thermaltake Toughpower W0133Read - Thermaltake Toughpower W0132

  • Potentia Semiconductor intros primary side power module for LCD HDTVs

    01.30.2007

Although finding power supplies potent enough to power just about anything isn't exactly a struggle, locating an adequate power source that takes up the absolute minimum amount of space within a given enclosure is an ongoing challenge. Potentia Semiconductor has introduced what it calls the "industry's first primary side power module" for LCD HDTVs, which will purportedly allow for 32- to 65-inch sets to become even slimmer. The PM-6010 is a "power control and conversion module for primary side, off-line power factor correction (PFC) and isolated DC-DC power conversion using LLC resonant power topologies," which essentially spells out in so many words that it can provide the power LCD TVs need in a fraction of the size, but curiously omits details about just how much volume will be saved. Nevertheless, the device is available to early access customers in versions ranging from 200 to 500 watts, and can be implemented in sets that "employ the direct powering of the CCFL backlighting from the PFC or traditional power topologies."[Via DMasia]

  • Ultra Products unveils 2000-watt X3 ATX power supply

    01.05.2007

We're all about watching new "world's (insert adjective here)" gizmos become a reality, and we certainly don't mind the occasional dash of overkill, but Ultra Products' forthcoming power supply takes "insane" to another level. In what's presumably the world's largest, most powerful PSU to call an ATX case home, the 2000-watt Modular X3 comes in at 10.25-inches in length and will reportedly fit "wherever a PC Power & Cooling 1000-watt version will". The +12V rail alone is rated at 1800-watts, which means that it can purportedly handle a 150A load, and just might cause some sort of small disaster if actually achieved. Nevertheless, the smorgasbord of connectors allow for more power connections that most could even fathom needing, but Ultra believes that this PSU should remove all worry over whether or not your rig "has enough juice." While it's easy to brush this off as completely absurd, the latest AMD scorchers combined with a few NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX or ATI R600 cards could easily eat up a good bit of the supplied power, so if a ginormous power supply was the only thing missing from finishing up your energy-sucking rig, Ultra's X3 should be available sometime this quarter for "less than $499."[Via Digg]

Good news for those of you already addicted to Phantasy Star Universe (me), the beta has been extended until Saturday, October 21st. Now you have three more days to die and watch your unhelpful teammates hump your corpse. Assuming you can actually connect anyway. Just to be sure, we connected earlier and the beta is definitely still working. Some of you may remember that the beta was cut short thanks to a delay and yesterday's Live outage. It's nice to see that SEGA is willing to extend the beta in light of these issues. Anybody enjoying the game so far?[Thanks, Mike]

Maybe you're like us. You woke up this morning, eager to download Lumines Live or see if the Phantasy Star beta is still running. You may have been disappointed, then, to see that Live is still pretty buggy. We received errors in Marketplace when trying to download Lumines Live, random disconnects, and an inability to accept voice chat requests. Looks like whatever they're still doing to Xbox.com is affecting Live in some way. Consider this a place to complain. And if any of you have managed to successfully download Lumines, let us know.

Phantasy Star fans rejoice! The open beta of the upcoming Phantasy Star Universe is coming to Live Marketplace this weekend. There is no exact date listed for the beginning of the beta so, start looking for it on Marketplace tomorrow -- or you can feverishly check every five minutes, like me. The download will only be available for two days, so get it while the gettin's good. There is one caveat and a concern, though. The caveat: you must have Xbox Live Gold to participate -- though you'll only need Silver when the retail game ships. The concern: we have no idea whether or not you can retain your gained experience should you decide to purchase the retail version. Oh, one more thing, we can only assume that this is for North America only. European friends, let us know if you've got it in you're area. For more info on the beta, visit the official site.PSU ships on October 24th. Until then, happy hunting.[Thanks, Simon]Update: Contributor vid33nyc1 pointed us to a handy Q&A thread in the PSU forums that cleared up some questions. The beta will be available in the US, Europe, and Japan. Whatever happens in the beta, stays in the beta. No levels, items, etc. will carry over into the retail version.

A few Ken weeks ago we brought you the rumor that Phantasy Star Universe just might be free to play on the Xbox 360. At the time we were hoping that SEGA would subsidize the game with horse armor microtransactions. Unfortunately, it looks like that's not the case. Rob from Orange Lounge Radio sent us the bad word this morning:" ... Sega sent an e-mail this week that corrected what they had earlier communicated to us about PSU being free online... it's now set to be $9.99 a month."$9.99 isn't that bad -- certainly better than some MMOs -- but it sure as hell isn't as nice as free. Oh, well. You can still count on seeing at least one of us 360 fanboys on there (i.e. me). Just think of it this way, we have the only version with voice chat. That's worth 10 simoleons, right?

The opening of the official English Phantasy Star Universe website managed to get lost in the shuffle last week, and for that we apologize. As punishment for our tardiness, upper management has released the weasels. Believe me, the weasels ... they are merciless. Putting our freshly lacerated fingers back on the keyboard, we found that the site has lots of info for fans of the series. It's unfortunate that all of the available media on the site (apart from the above shot) more or less completely fail to display the game's lush environments -- a Sonic Team trademark. There is however, a plethora of information about all aspects of the game (except monthly fees or a lack thereof), much more than can be listed here. Some things to look for: Weapon customization and crafting Each player gets a personal room that also serves as a shop for others Each race and their abilities Mission system explanation Info on new lobbies Info on both multiplayer and single player games Vehicles The battle system A spiffy, though tiny, video (in English, no less) Lots, lots more Any Phantasy Star Online fan worth his or her salt owes it to him or herself to check it out. The game is scheduled to hit American shores on October 24th (Europe on November 24th) so, you'll have plenty of time to soak it all in. Is anybody else crazy excited for this?
