How to watch the Super Bowl: A cord-cutter’s guide

We all know you don't have to be a fan of American football to watch the Super Bowl. The NFL's Big Game, which this year will be played between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, goes beyond the sport. Even if you don't like who's playing (we're looking at you, Tom Brady), the Super Bowl is the perfect excuse to get together with friends and enjoy a day full of seven-layer dip, chicken wings and, of course, booze. Thankfully, in 2019, the NFL is making it easy for everyone in the US to watch Super Bowl LIII, even if you don't have a cable or satellite account.

PlayStation Vue, Sony's sneakily growing video service, has earned the distinct honor of being the first streaming TV provider to be integrated into Apple's TV app. Subscribers will now be able to watch live and on-demand content through the TV app on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, instead of only in the PS Vue app.

PlayStation Vue adds 200 more local broadcasters in time for fall TV

The price for PlayStation Vue may be a bit higher than it used to be, but in quite a few markets it just added more local broadcast channels, which is particularly worthwhile since subscribers can no longer opt out of them to save a few bucks. Sony announced that including 200 recent additions, more than 450 local ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates are now streaming. The expansion comes just in time for viewers hoping to cut the cord on cable or satellite and still watch football or network TV shows without adding on rabbit ears. It does get tricky when it comes to using features like the DVR due to rights issues, but Sony's FAQ should explain what is allowed where. For a list of newly-added stations, just take a look here. Sony claims that 97 percent of the US population has access to at least one broadcast station now -- hopefully they're all the right ones to keep you caught up on fall TV.

For soccer (er, football) fans everywhere, the next four weeks are going to be all about the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The globe's biggest sporting event, which takes place every four years, is kicking off Thursday, June 14th, when host nation Russia takes on Saudi Arabia at 11AM ET. And yes, we know the USA team won't be there, but football is bigger than just one nation. So even if you won't get to cheer on the Stars and Stripes this year, there's still plenty to look forward to at the World Cup.

Today is your last day to get YouTube TV for $35 per month. Tomorrow, the price increases to $40 per month, putting it in line with similar services such as Sony's PS Vue and Hulu's live TV plan. YouTube TV launched last April in a limited number of markets, but since then, it has grown significantly in both reach and offerings. Google announced the planned price increase last month as it added a number of new channels, including TNT, TBS, Cartoon Network and CNN to the service. Those who subscribe before March 13th will retain the $35 per month price.

While Sony's TV-streaming service PlayStation Vue has been around for almost three years, it's currently facing stiff competition from the likes of Sling TV, DirecTV Now, YouTube TV and Hulu TV. To stave off its rivals, it's been adding features like multi-picture viewing as well as beefing up its sports offerings. Today, Sony announced three more updates, all of which are designed to make the service more mobile-friendly. Of note, you now no longer need a television to sign up for PS Vue.

PlayStation Vue drops all Viacom channels

If you're a subscriber to Sony's PlayStation Vue streaming service, here's some bad news: it's discontinuing all Viacom content starting November 11th. That means that channels like Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Spike will no longer be available on Vue. In a blog post, the company stated that the decision was "the best way for us to continue to offer the most compelling value to our fans," which suggests that cost could've been an issue.

Sony keeps getting more serious about its cord-cutter service, PlayStation Vue. After announcing support for Android mobile devices in June, the company has revealed that its streaming app is now available on Android TV. If you have a set-top box powered by Google's platform, or a compatible TV, you just need to make sure you're running Android OS 4.4 or higher and you'll be good to go.

PlayStation is beefing up the premium offerings on its PS Vue streaming TV service. As of today, HBO and Showtime will be available as part of the new Ultra ($64.99 to $74.99 per month based on location) plan. Don't feel like ponying up that much? Both HBO and Cinemax are $15 per month on their own. A post on the PlayStation Blog says that this is the first internet-based pay-TV service to offer the channels both live and streaming without a bundled package.

Sony's attempt at killing your pay-tv subscription is available on Android now -- just like the company promised. What's more, PlayStation Vue also has a few new features on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. On the former, the channel guide has a video window in the upper right now, so you can keep an eye on what you were watching as you scroll through other viewing options. It's essentially what cable and satellite guides have offered for years. If you're using your PS3 as a media machine, the addition of a quick navigation overlay, which offers a "last channel" option among other tweaks, should be welcome; it's also available on PS4.

  • My love affair with PlayStation Vue: a cautionary tale

You have to appreciate the irony: I'd intended to write this as a ringing endorsement of PlayStation Vue, Sony's cable-like streaming TV alternative. The service, available on PS4, PS3 and iOS, did just launch nationwide earlier this week after a year of select market testing, of which I was a part. But when I got home from the gym a few nights ago, ready to watch a DVR'd episode of The Real O'Neals (any opportunity to watch Martha Plimpton in prime time is a good opportunity, OK?), the service shit the proverbial bed. It could just have been a case of launch week jitters, the sudden influx of PS Vue subscriptions stressing Sony's servers. But for me, the timing couldn't have been worse.

Looking to stream Sony's TV service to your PS3 or PS4? Living in Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale? If that particularly specific Venn diagram has you smack in the middle, then good news: PlayStation Vue launched there, today. While it won't be on your iPad or Vita just right now, expect compatibility to roll out as soon as Sony deems it ready -- then that Venn diagram overlap will get at least a little bigger.

  • PlayStation Now is a tech miracle, but it's no Netflix for games

Sony wants you to want PS Now, its Netflix-like game-streaming service. The problem is, the company doesn't seem to know how to build that desire. Though the recent app relaunch has seen the service's user interface improve considerably, the same can't be said for the user experience. I used PS Now on the PlayStation 4 almost exclusively for a week and by the time my seven-day trial was set to expire, I still couldn't find a compelling reason to pay for the service -- let alone recommend it to a friend. With Netflix, the value is apparent: $8 per month for on-demand access to thousands of movies and TV shows. Sure the visual and audio quality of that streaming library might not be on par with its Blu-ray counterparts, but the convenience outweighs any cons. For PS Now, that same trade-off isn't quite worth it.

  • Sony adds a la carte TV channels to PlayStation Vue

If you've been longing to ditch your cable provider for PS Vue, PlayStation's streaming take on "television," then you'll like what Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House announced at E3 today. This July, PlayStation users will have the option to sign-up for à la carte programming. That's right, individual channels will be made available for subscription, allowing users to opt-out of pricey programming tiers. The new subscription feature will launch with Showtime, Machinima and Fox Soccer Channel. What's more, House confirmed that PS Plus subscribers will be privy to unspecified discounts for programming packages. And if that wasn't enough good news, House also added that, starting tonight, PS Vue will be made available to PS4 users in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Check here for everything happening at E3 2015!

  • PlayStation's Vue TV streaming app hits iPad in limited release

We've known that PlayStation Vue would hit iPad sooner or later and now Sony's TV streaming service finally has. PlayStation Vue Mobile's available in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia (the same cities the service launched in earlier this year) at the moment, and it's basically the same as what's on your PS4 in terms of functionality. So, video on demand, live TV and access to your favorite shows and channels as long as you're in one of the three aforementioned cities. You still need a PS4 to sign up, of course, and blackout restrictions can occasionally block streaming, just like we've seen with Sling TV. Usually, that means sporting events blacked out for various reasons, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

  • Sony attempts to 'redefine television' with launch of PlayStation Vue

With 20 million-plus PlayStation 4 consoles sold to date and over 80 million PlayStation 3s in homes worldwide, Sony has plenty of reason to make Vue, its TV-streaming service, a cornerstone of the platform. The subscription-based service, which officially launches today in New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, is more than just a Sling TV clone, too. Vue offers not only a mixture of live and on-demand content from cable networks like Discovery Communications (e.g., TLC, OWN, Animal Planet) and NBCUniversal (e.g., Bravo, CNBC and E!), but also broadcast TV from NBC, CBS and FOX. And thanks to cloud storage, PS Vue also features what Sony's calling a "virtually unlimited" DVR. It's the company's take on a streaming experience that "redefines television."
