To properly hype fans for this winter's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Capcom has prepared a series of screenshots comparing the original Ace Attorney games to their updated, 3DS counterparts. As you'd expect, the leap from older handhelds to the 3DS offers Capcom's artists more aesthetic freedom and the result is a more colorful, less pixelated adventure. To see for yourself, visit the Capcom Unity website, where the publisher has posted 12 comparison screenshots in addition to the image seen above. We're still waiting on an official release date for the game, but as we're rapidly approaching the holiday season, that information should appear soon. [Image: Capcom]

Keep an eye on Udon Entertainment if you're looking to expand your gaming-related comic or physical art book collection: the publisher detailed plans for upcoming prints during a panel at Comic-Con San Diego, which involves material from several notable series. Though release dates for this pair were unspecified, art enthusiasts can safely begin anticipating English versions of The Art of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and Professor Layton Official Fanbook. Gungnir Official Art Chronicle is on its way as well, which celebrates the universe of PSP RPG Gungnir. Udon is continuing work with hardcover editions of the Street Fighter comic series as well, with the publisher describing volume 2 as "almost complete." Alex Culang and Raynato Castro's Katamari comic has been rolled into Udon's Manga Classics line, with a Volume 1 collection coming in December 2014. Also, anyone that's trying to track down a copy of the Street Fighter: World Warrior Encyclopedia can rest easy: Udon will distribute an oversized "special hardcover edition" next year, which will feature new artwork and updated information related to Ultra Street Fighter 4. • Failure is a great option

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is, in many ways, a typical detective game. You look for clues, you interrogate witnesses, investigate suspects, and ultimately decide whodunnit. One feature separates it from much of the mystery pack, however: You can get things wrong. The game will let you make incorrect deductions, draw wrong conclusions and even send the wrong person to prison. The ability to fail is probably the game's best feature, and it's one I wish more detective games would embrace. It's easy to see why mystery games would be reluctant to let the player completely blow a case. For starters, there isn't much replay value in that type of gameplay, and slogging through a case all over again, hearing the same testimony or performing the same experiments, would lack a certain vivacity. People also process information differently, so what might be a stonkingly obvious connection to one person would be utterly baffling to the next; add differences in cultural references or knowledge into the mix, and the problems inherent in crafting a tightly-constructed detective narrative become obvious. Plus, people just plain don't like feeling dumb, and getting a big fat "WRONG, BUCKO!" after noodling your way through a case would understandably be off-putting for some players. It should be there anyway, though, because otherwise there's no real incentive to put your brain through its paces.

  • Joystiq Weekly: VR walker Omni, Hitman Go review, Mario Golf's season pass and more

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Okay, we have to admit that the Omni, a motion-tracking platform that associates real-life walking with in-game movement, is kind of ridiculous, right? Yeah, we do and we will - as long as we can also acknowledge how interesting the concept is. Sprinting in reality to hurry down a virtual hallway probably won't be as quick as strafing with arrow keys, but the tradeoff sounds worthwhile. Pairing Omni with the Oculus Rift would bring us closer to the hectic deathmatch action of games like Halo 4, but we could also do rhythmic leaps through stages of Runner 2 or wildly-dangerous imitations of Mirror's Edge's parkour. Hmm ... maybe Omni should be bundled with life insurance. We can ponder the benefits of treadmill controllers together, but if your brain needs a break from all that, there's plenty of gears to switch to after the break. Between a glimpse of the new Ace Attorney game, reviews for NES Remix 2 and Hitman Go, and an exploration of morality systems like those found in the Infamous and Mass Effect series, there's lots to think about beyond how physical our video games could be in a few decades.

  • The next Ace Attorney is first in 'The Great Ace Attorney' series

The next Ace Attorney game from Capcom is apparently called The Great Ace Attorney, and is the start of a new series, according to a Famitsu interview with the game's producers translated by Siliconera. The game is in development for 3DS and is currently exclusive to Japan. Producer Shintaro Kojima says that while the next game is "not a main-numbered Ace Attorney title, it's the start of a new series called The Great Ace Attorney" and that "it's not simply just a derivative title." Series creator and director Shu Takumi also noted that "the image and feel behind its play will be quite different from all the other Ace Attorney games up until now." The Great Ace Attorney was revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu this week, and is set in Japan's Meiji period. The game's protagonist is Ryuichi Naruhodo, an ancestor of the series primary hero Phoenix Wright. Capcom's first trailer for the game introduces Naruhodo and a new heroine, Susato Mikotoba, who Kojima says is "pretty much a graceful Japanese woman, a proper girl who does everything the proper way." A scan, reportedly lifted from the latest issue of Famitsu, reveals that the next entry in the fan-favorite Ace Attorney series will leave our modern era in favor of Japan's Meiji period. Not much is known of the new game, though according to a tweet from Ace Attorney fan site Court-Records.net, it will bear the title "Dai Gyakuten Saiban - Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken," which translates to "Grand Turnabout Trial - The Adventures of Naruhodou Ryuunosuke." From this, we can deduce that the game stars an ancestor of Ace Attorney protagonist Phoenix Wright (who is known as Ryuichi Naruhodo in his native Japan). The character portrayed in the scan does indeed resemble Mr. Wright, though the latter never wore a katana into the courtroom. Finally, Court-Records reveals that long-time Ace Attorney developer Shu Takumi is once again leading this project and that it is currently in development for the 3DS handheld. It's currently unknown if the game will make its way to Western shores, or if it will remain exclusive to Japan. [Image: Famitsu]

The first three Ace Attorney games are reportedly coming to 3DS, with a court date in Japan set for April 17. According to Siliconera and Shinobi (via Gematsu), this week's issue of Famitsu says the Game Boy Advance trilogy - that's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations - are to be enhanced on the handheld with stereoscopic 3D. The 3DS bundle, titled Ace Attorney 123: Wright Selection, wouldn't be the games' first re-release by any stretch. Capcom already summoned the tribunal trio on DS, WiiWare, and PC, and as an HD package on iOS. We've reached out to Capcom to confirm reports, and to find out if the sweat-slicked lawyer will re-appear in a western version. Update: When approached, a Capcom representative told Joystiq, "This title is not confirmed for release in the west at this time." PS: That's an image of the Phoenix Wright movie, not the 3DS game... the enhancements won't be that good.

Capcom plans to enter the ring and reaffirm its presence in the fighting game world, Deep Down producer Kazunori Sugiura told 4gamer in a group interview translated by Destructoid. There's no word yet on which IPs will lead the charge. The next Phoenix Wright game is already in the works, Dual Destinies director Takeshi Yamazaki said. Director of Phoenix Wright 1 - 3, Ghost Trick and Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (due for western launch in 2014) Shu Takumi said that his team will announce a game next year – yes, the year that begins in two days. Capcom will announce a revival of one of its classic IPs by "the time the weather warms," Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara producer Kenji Sugiura said. Smell that? It's the scent of pure, optimistic ambition at the start of another new year. Breathe it in, everyone.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies will be the first installment of the Ace Attorney series to use full 3D graphics, a change Art Director Takuro Fuse has detailed at length on the Capcom-Unity blog. Fuse described the team's first attempt to bring Phoenix into the third dimension as "cringe-worthy," but by refining character aesthetics and utilizing "slick camera work," Fuse and his team were able to show off a "new, hybrid Phoenix" that successfully merged 2D and 3D art. "I hope when you get the chance to play the game that you'll play it with the 3D volume all the way up," Fuse wrote. "Nothing would make me happier than to have you experience it in all its glory!" Phoenix wasn't the only character to go through several designs, however.

Ace Attorney 5 for 3DS features a new emotion reading system, provided by Wright Anything Agency's latest addition, Kizuki Kokone. We first got a glimpse of Kokone and her ability to read people's emotions in this trailer, but now Capcom provides more information about her powers and personal background, as translated by Siliconera.Kokone's Heart Scope ability allows her to listen to the emotions behind a witness' testimony and suss out the truth behind contradictory statements or lies. The Heart Scope pulls up a screen with four emotions and a lot of "noise;" players must clear the static by finding discrepancies between different combinations of testimonies and emotions. Once the noise reaches 0 percent, that emotion reading becomes a fact for the case.Ace Attorney 5 features full 3D animations for the first time, including within the courtroom and during investigations.

The latest issue of Japanese gaming mag Famitsu confirms Ace Attorney 5 as coming to 3DS, according to Andriasang. Up until this point, we only knew that it existed and that, well ... that's pretty much all we knew. Now we know that Phoenix Wright returns as the protagonist, one year after the events of Apollo Justice, and interacts with a new partner dressed in a primarily yellow outfit. There's still no word on when the game will come out in Japan (though it will be playable at Tokyo Game Show), or if it'll ever be localized for western countries. The most recent game in the series, Ace Attorney Investigations 2, was not translated by Capcom.

Director Takashi Miike's Phoenix Wright movie will be released in Japan on Blu-Ray and DVD on August 22. The home releases include a commentary track by Miike and Ace Attorney series creator Shu Takumi, along with a bonus disc with another Takumi interview, trailers, and other assorted material. The US and Japan use the same Blu-Ray region, so you can import that version and watch it. The language barrier might be an issue, but we're pretty sure we'd be able to follow the story of Phoenix Wright in pantomime by now.In the meantime, you do have a couple of opportunities to see it with English subtitles. The movie will be shown twice in NYC as part of the New York Asian Film Festival, on July 8 and July 15.

During the International Film Festival Rotterdam, news of a localized release for Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney adaptation came from a reliable source: Takashi Miike himself. At a Q&A following a showing of the film, Miike announced that a worldwide release was planned.According to Twitchfilm, each version would have both dubbed and subtitled dialogue using the character names from that region's version of the games. So Miles Edgeworth, et al. in America, but ... Benjamin Hunter in France. Now that we have admissible evidence that we'll be able to see the movie, how is it? "This is definitely a love-it or hate-it affair, and if you don't dig the silly caricature tongue-in-cheek atmosphere which inhabits the universe of 'Ace Attorney,' you will tire of the film way before its halfway point has been reached," Twitchfilm said. "But if you DO have fun with it, this is the fastest way to spend almost two and a half hours."

At a 10th anniversary event for the Ace Attorney series in Tokyo, Capcom officially announced Ace Attorney 5, revealing the above logo. No specifics about the game were offered, including date, platform, or characters -- and there's no character silhouette in the logo to show us who the star is. All we know is that there is one, and we have to start presenting our case for a localization to Capcom. The event also brought a small amount of news relating to Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney for 3DS: the animated cutscenes are produced by anime studio Bones, and the game is due sometime this year. Famitsu has screens from one of these cutscenes, of Phoenix and Maya on a plane ride. Finally, new HD versions of the first three Ace Attorneys will be released on iOS. The Phoenix Wright movie is lookin' good, you guys. We were foolish to ever doubt the incredible directorial abilities of the great Takashi Miike (Ichii The Killer, IZO), but we've been burned before, and it's hard to put faith into a video-game adaptation film these days. The production still released a few days ago helped ease our fears a little bit, but the above footage has pushed us completely over the edge into straight-up excited territory. The clip is a bit noisy, sure, on account of the confusing, disembodied screaming, but the underlying cinematography and character designs look spot on. There's still no word on the film receiving a stateside release, but Miike's work has enjoyed a cult following in the U.S. for years, as has the Phoenix Wright series, so it doesn't seem entirely outside the realm of possibility. Gyakuten Saiban will hit Japanese theaters on February 11. Update: The trailer has been pulled from YouTube.

Capcom actually did it. Phoenix Wright is in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and somehow Capcom managed to build an arsenal of attacks based on Phoenix's strengths: investigation, gathering and presenting evidence, and ... getting out of Maya Fey's way. He even has a super attack in which he presents decisive evidence in a murder case against his opponent. If you're at New York Comic-Con, you'll be able to get material for your own testimony about this game by playing the new build featuring Phoenix. The new media also features Marvel's Nova, and a new background, with a poster in which heroes present for MvC2 but not MvC3 are listed as either "slain" or "apprehended." That's ice cold, Capcom. And not just in Iceman's case.%Gallery-136450% Update: Enjoy four more trailers after the break, including a Nova reveal trailer, two videos of the new characters fighting, and a new, more general UMvC3 trailer.
