What do when you're the creator of one of the most profitable games in the world? For Fortnite developer Epic Games, the answer it turns out is to help other studios work on their next projects. Today, the company announced it has signed publishing agreements with Remedy Entertainment, Playdead and genDESIGN. Between those three studios, they've made some of the most highly acclaimed games in the past few years, including The Last Guardian, Inside, Limbo and Control.

Although Danish developer Playdead has only released two games since its start in 2006, they've both been great ones. Early last year the studio teased its next game after Inside and Limbo (both are now available on Switch, along with a number of other platforms) with a tweet and a single image, but now co-founder and art director Arnt Jensen has revealed a few more details in an interview with DR.

Good news for fans of creepy, atmospheric games: Playdead is bringing its hit platformers Limbo and Inside to Nintendo Switch June 28th. Both were already available to play on the go, as they're on iOS (Limbo is on the Google Play Store too). But if you want to delve into them on the subway using Joycons rather than a touchscreen, now's your chance. Just be prepared for some quizzical looks from the people sitting next to you while you explore those disturbing, beautiful worlds. Iam8bit, purveyors of gaming soundtracks on vinyl and other cool tchotchkes, is teaming up with RealDoll and developer Playdead for its next project. Details for the Inside special edition are scarce, but it'll include a PlayStation 4 disc with the game, and Steam codes for Inside and Limbo. Oh, and it'll cost $375. From the pre-order page: "Iam8bit x Playdead x RealDoll are collaborating on a mysterious collector's edition for Inside. We will NOT tell you what it is. Maybe it's what you're thinking... maybe not. We can confirm that there are several items included, one of which is a PlayStation 4 game disc. The rest is up for speculation."

Creepy platformer 'Inside' leaps from console to iOS

Inside was my favorite game from 2016. It's a short, atmospheric adventure by Playdead — the same studio behind the mesmerizing, monochromatic Limbo — with a truly thought-provoking ending. Even now, I think about the game's final moments and what some of the build-up meant. If you haven't played it before and own an iPhone or iPad, there's no better chance to jump in — the game is out on iOS today. It's free to start but requires a $6.99 fee to reach the end credits. Trust me, it's well worth the asking price; few puzzle-platformers are this hauntingly beautiful.

    The best Xbox One games

The Xbox One has come a long way since its 2013 debut. Microsoft has fixed the console's hardware flaws with the One S and the recently released One X, but now it has a different problem to address: a dearth of compelling games you can't play anywhere else. In recent years the company has relied on timed third-party exclusives that eventually make their way to other platforms or are also available on Windows and Steam. It happens on PS4 as well, but the difference there is that Sony has a wide assortment of games that you can only play on its console. That's not to say there aren't exclusive games worth playing on Xbox; it's just that they're buried among annual Forza racing games, middling modern Halo releases and the testosterone-fueled Gears of War franchise. Microsoft has promised to break out of that predictable release cadence, though, so the future could be brighter than you may have come to expect. As it stands, these are the best Xbox One games you can play right now.

'Limbo' and 'Inside' will make for one creepy retail disc

You've probably already beaten Limbo and Inside from Danish development team Playdead. But if you've wanted a physical version of the pair, that hasn't been available. Well, until now. Publisher 505 Games is partnering with the studio to put its macabre sidescrollers onto store shelves in one package for $30. If you're doing the math, that's the same price as buying the digital bundle on PSN or each game separately. Except, of course, you're getting a disc-based version.

It's been quite the week for Playdead fans. First came some explanation for why the typically lock-jawed studio behind Limbo and Inside lost one of its cofounders last July. Then, the team tweeted out a teaser image for its next project. Absolutely nothing is known about the game other than it might have something to do with a comet and that its protagonist might be an astronaut of sorts. Oh, and it's using a subdued color palette and stylized visual motif. Par for the course here, really.

  • The 'Inside' soundtrack was created with a human skull

Inside, the mysterious puzzle platformer by Playdead, continues the dark and isolating tone of its predecessor, Limbo. Much of the game's atmosphere can be attributed to the soundtrack, which offers a beautiful, yet haunting frame for the narrative. To nail this sombre mood, composer and sound designer Martin Stig Andersen turned to the human body. He found an old skull (yes, a real skull) and played the game's score through it, like an old school filter. The results were "quite bad," but Anderson persisted -- with a little post-processing, the final tracks were born.

It's GOTY Season here at Joystiq, so it's apt timing for Limbo to bend its way back into the news. 2010's #8 game looks set to make its debut on PS4 - yes, yet another system - following a new PEGI listing at the turn of the year. The European ratings board is rarely misleading on these things, but for now we're waiting on official confirmation. We approached developer Playdead this morning about the PEGI rating, but CEO Dino Patti said the company wasn't able to comment.

  • Xbox One gets cozy with Threes and Limbo this week

Xbox One welcomes all moods on December 5 with Limbo and Threes, the next two ID@Xbox entries. Microsoft gifted early Xbox One adopters with Playdead's monochrome misadventure last month, but everyone can purchase the platformer starting Friday. As for numeric puzzler Threes, you can flirt with its figures on the big screen for $7, also on Friday. Limbo is dark, disturbing and more than a bit hostile, but it still earned the full five stars in our 2010 review. If you're after something perkier, Threes combines an esoteric brand of tile-matching with the jazzy, bubbly atmosphere of a lounge party. That may sound like a bizarre mixture, so it's worth reading our Portabliss column to see just why it intoxicated us.

  • Korean ratings board suggests Limbo coming to Xbox One

Developer Playdead's eerie monochrome adventure Limbo may soon appear on the Xbox One, if a listing on the website of the South Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee is anything to go by. Discovered by NeoGAF posters, the listing offers scant details, but does indicate that Microsoft's Korean arm submitted an Xbox One version of Limbo to the GRAC for approval. No further information is available as the game is still under review. While this listing is no guarantee that Limbo will reach the Xbox One, either in South Korea or elsewhere, ratings agencies have a long history of revealing a game's existence prior to an official announcement. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of Rocksmith 2014 were revealed by the ESRB and GRAC prior to Ubisoft's unveiling, just as the Pan European Game Information group outed the Xbox One version of Stick It To The Man before it was made official. • Limbo now available on the App Store

As expected, the creepy but excellent Limbo is now available on the iOS App Store, and playable on your iPhone or iPad. Playdead won a lot of awards and critical acclaim with this title, which takes a mysterious young boy on a journey to save his sister through several environments. The game is an excellently designed platformer with interesting physics puzzles that get increasingly complex. The overall feel of the game can be a little spooky (especially that giant spider), but even scaredy cats will appreciate the craft of it. Limbo is US$4.99 on the App Store, which may sound expensive, but the same game is still $9.99 on Steam, so we're getting it for half price right away. If you haven't sat down to play it on a PC or console yet, definitely consider picking it up.

Starting today, Limbo, the 2D side-scrolling game that both charmed and terrified us on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, is available for iOS devices. Dino Patti, the CEO of indie developer Playdead, tweeted the announcement about the game's launch with a link to the iTunes store, and from early reviews, the iOS port doesn't disappoint. Limbo tells the story of a young boy searching for his sister in an eerie monochromatic landscape; the game's restrained visuals and minimalistic sound effects are guaranteed to haunt you long after you stop playing. Both new gamers and fans who've come to love Limbo on their consoles can get their scares on the go -- for the price of $4.99 -- by heading over to the source link below.

If you're arachnophobic, you may take issue with having a giant spider on your phone. Limbo, Playdead's breakout video game with legs, is now available in the App store for $5 for iPad and iPhone. "Dark, disturbing, yet eerily beautiful, Limbo is a world that deserves to be explored," our own Richard Mitchell concluded in his review of the original Xbox Live Arcade release back in 2010. Another indie hit, Monaco, is on Mac today through Steam for $15. If you already own Monaco on Windows you can get the Mac version right away through Steamplay. The cooperative heist game also comes with a level editor with Steam Workshop support.

  • Moody platformer Limbo coming to iOS next week

Limbo is a critically acclaimed and very artistic platforming game that arrived on XBLA a few years ago, and has since arrived on PS3 and PC. It's by a company called Playdead, and it's a black-and-white short tale about a little boy in search of his sister. The game puts a series of physics-based jumping puzzles in a starkly threatening environment, as the little boy fights a big spider and makes his way through a crumbling world. And now, Playdead has announced that the game is coming to iOS. On July 3, it'll be available on the iPhone 4S, the iPad 2 and the latest iPod touch, and devices newer than those, for US$4.99. Playdead says it has been "rethinking the controls and performing extensive optimizations to ensure an amazing touch-based experience," but we'll have to see if the game uses virtual buttons, or goes for a more specifically touchscreen control scheme. There likely won't be any new content, but this is an excellent title, and should be a good addition to Apple's platforms.

As sad and miserable as the world of Limbo may be, it seems like players just can't get enough of it. Developer Playdead has announced that the monochromatic platformer will arrive on iOS starting July 3 for $4.99. The app will be compatible with devices including and above the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the latest iPod Touch. Playdead has also revealed that Limbo has sold over 3 million copies across PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Mac and Vita. That's a lot of giant, terrifying spiders.

Indie darling Limbo wanders onto Vita on June 4 in North America, and June 5 in Europe. The port, coming via PSN, is priced $14.99/€12.99/£9.99. The Vita version isn't cross-play compatible with the PS3 one, and doesn't feature any touchscreen gameplay. PlayDead first brought the grim platformer to XBLA in 2010, later taking it to PSN and Steam. The Vita port was outsourced to LittleBigPlanet Vita co-developer Double Eleven. "Together [with Double Eleven] we are working hard to give the mobile players exactly the same experience the PS3 players have had on the living room TV," PlayDead founder Dino Patti told us back in March. Update: Playdead's confirmed dates were out by a day. We've updated the post with the correct release dates. We've also corrected the North American price. %Gallery-189775%
