The Playstation Classic is $100 worth of '90s nostalgia
All that's old will be new again this Festivus, if the Playstation Classic is any indication. On Tuesday, Engadget headed down to Sony Interactive Studios in San Mateo, California for an early look at what is shaping up to be one of the hottest items of the holidays.
We'll never agree which games should be included with retro consoles
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. Comforting yet tantalizingly short-lived, nostalgia has an insidious allure that has long been weaponized by marketers to drive consumers toward purchases that they'd otherwise shun (or often regret immediately after). But, the impact of these associative memories may end up backfiring for Sony and the upcoming release of its PlayStation Classic retro console. Because for nostalgia to actually work, it usually helps if people remember the included titles.
Add the original PlayStation boot screen to your PS4 gaming videos
Nothing promises gaming excitement like the dramatic eight-second boot up of the original Sony Playstation (below). You can now add it to your game play videos, thanks to Sony's free 20th anniversary theme pack for SHAREfactory, the video editing tool for the Playstation 4. It comes with four intros (including the original boot screen), four outros, 11 titles clips, eight transitions, 26 stickers and four backgrounds. Sony notes that this can only be used in SHAREfactory, not as a PS4 home screen theme. Luckily, it already has a Playstation One theme pack if that's what you're after.
PocketStation, the PS1's memory card with a screen, teased for November return
You might remember the PocketStation, but most of you probably don't -- it was a Japan-only peripheral that launched over there way back in 1999. Another thing rising from the dead today, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has just released highly-confusing teaser video promising a big PocketStation announcement on 5th November, two months shy of its 14th birthday. Despite the lengthy four-minute tease, there's no mention of exactly what PlayStation has planned -- a similarly-behaving app for smartphones? A new peripheral for its consoles and handheld? Just some new adorable plushies of the PocketStation's cat-like protagonist? Android PlayStation emulator PSX4Droid pulled from Market, timing pointing at Xperia Play (updated)
Uh oh, the day has finally come. We just gathered from Joystiq (and confirmed ourselves) that the renowned Android first-gen PlayStation emulator, PSX4Droid, has been pulled from the Market. The reason? Its author, ZodTTD, said Google informed him that it was a matter of "Content Policy violation," however the fact it's taken eight months for Google to take action suggests it might have a little something to do with the imminent launch of the Xperia Play, which will have its own mechanism to power the original PlayStation's games. Another mystery is that it looks like other emulators such as SNesoid (SNES), GameBoid (Game Boy) and, in particular, FPSe (PlayStation) appear to be safe for now, which might suggest that there are other reasons behind this removal; but still, the timing suggests otherwise. On the bright side, we can always rely on third-party app markets. Update: Here's a super generic statement we just received from Google regarding this matter: "We remove apps from Android Market that violate our policies."
