Gran Turismo Sport just released a new patch, and amid gameplay and cosmetic updates, you'll find the option to buy cars with your real hard-earned money. Developer Polyphony Digital is putting more than 200 cars on sale in PS Store and Brand Central despite earlier assurances that the game would not include microtransactions.

'Gran Turismo Sport' brings back a classic solo racing mode

As good as it was for Polyphony Digital to finally reach the PS4 with Gran Turismo Sport, its game modes were a bit of a shock for long-time fans. What about those old-fashioned cups? You're about to get them back. The developers are releasing an update in December that will introduce GT League, a single-player mode which resurrects the classic GT modes of earlier games. True to form, you have to compete in a series of cup competitions, some of which require certain cars. You may need a car with a boxer engine, for example, or you might have to own a specific model.

Sony is offering up a four-day GT Sport preview, a week ahead of its long-time-coming release. (That's October 17th, in case you forgot.) PlayStation Plus members can preload the demo October 7th, and will be able to take a few cars for a spin from October 9th through October 12th. The demo will offer the first chance for players test out GT Sport's new features, including a photography mode and custom livery for the racing car of your choice. The teaser will also have a new matchmaking system built-in to ensure you're racing similarly-skilled drivers and not just getting lapped all the time.

The long awaited Gran Turismo Sport finally has a launch date -- October 17th for North America and the 18th for Europe. Originally slated for launch in November of last year, the game's release was delayed last August so as not to sacrifice quality for a quicker release date. But Polyphony, the game's creator, just completed the closed beta phase it started in March and is now in the final stages of polishing the game.

I've never been into Gran Turismo (or racing games in general), but when my colleague Timothy J. Seppala asked if I wanted to play the franchise's next title, GT Sport, I didn't think twice about saying yes. Especially after seeing how gorgeous the latest trailer looks. And I'm glad I checked it out, even if I did end up in second-to-last place in the two races I played. The graphics in Gran Turismo Sport are as gorgeous as they look on screenshots; it's seriously hard to differentiate cars in the game from real ones. Put simply, it's a perfect way to showcase gameplay at 4K 60fps (don't forget about HDR either), and even more fun if you're experiencing it the way I did: in a vibrating "sled" with a racing seat, steering wheels and pedals.

'Gran Turismo Sport' closed beta kicks off March 17th

Like seemingly every Polyphony Digital game, Gran Turismo Sport has been a long time in coming... but you might not have to wait much longer to give it a spin. Polyphony has announced a Gran Turismo Sport closed beta that will start March 17th for PS4 owners in the US, with other countries following later (European users can find more info here). Just which cars, races and tracks you'll get will "vary" throughout the test, but you'll definitely get a taste for how your Driver Profile (which accounts for your on-track behavior and performance) matches you up with similarly skilled online rivals.

'Gran Turismo Sport' delayed to sometime in 2017

Polyphony Digital has a reputation for taking its sweet time to bring Gran Turismo games to Sony consoles, and Gran Turismo Sport won't be an exception to the rule. The studio has delayed its first PS4 racing game to sometime in 2017 after having previously committed to a November 2016 launch. Why the sudden change of plans? Polyphony chief Kazunori Yamauchi says his team doesn't want to "compromise the experience in any way" -- as is frequently the case, the company would rather be late than sully its obsessive vision. That's wise given the history of rushed driving game launches (case in point: Driveclub), but it's unfortunate for PS4 owners who've been waiting for what's likely to be their console's definitive racing title.

At long last, Gran Turismo is coming to the PlayStation 4... and you'll have more reasons to play than just the usual graphics and gameplay updates. The newly unveiled Gran Turismo Sport will have two FIA-sanctioned championships running throughout the year (one for countries, one for manufacturers), and the winners of each will get real FIA prizes. This is about building the "next 100 years of motorsports," Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi says -- in other words, he wouldn't be surprised if racing is increasingly virtual in the future. It's certainly an easier path to glory than becoming a real race car driver.

  • Create 'Gran Turismo 6' race tracks on your tablet

For ages, Polyphony Digital has been promising a Gran Turismo 6 track editor that lets you build the race course of your dreams. Well, it's finally here... if not quite in the form you might have expected. Download the Track Path Editor app for Android and iOS and you can design circuits for the PlayStation 3 sim on your tablet. It's not so detailed that you'll recreate every nuance of your local raceway, but you can trace paths with your finger, choose themes and add scenery. Think of it as a way to extend the life of GT6 beyond the occasional new concept car -- you don't have to settle for driving on Autumn Ring or Brands Hatch for the hundredth time.

To celebrate 15 years of Gran Turismo, Sony is releasing a documentary about the obsessions of series creator Kazunori Yamauchi. Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide chronicles Yamauchi's creative process via interviews with car makers and journalists, all keen to heap praise on the mastermind. While the trailer (embedded below) does get a little bit heavy-handed -- with slightly dodgy comparisons to Magellan, for instance -- it's nice to see an influential game designer's work in the spotlight. We don't have a release date, but it coming out near GT6's December 6th launch doesn't seem too far-fetched.

  • Gran Turismo series ships more than 50 million globally

While it may seem seem like just yesterday that we first played Sony's love note to console gear heads in Gran Turismo, it was actually ten years ago ... a realization that made us feel incredibly old as Sony and developer Polyphony Digital announced that the sim, that first got its license in December 1997, has shipped more than 50 million units across the globe. This figure, of course, includes the recently released Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which according to Sony has shipped out more than 2 million units. The company is playing coy, though, as to whether this number includes just physical products or digital downloads over PSN as well. We'd like to extend our hand and congratulate the series for making it this far, but unfortunately it didn't stop between the two yellow lines on the pavement so it's going to have to go back to the start and try again.

  • GT5 could maybe possibly come to Chinese PCs, perhaps

Oh, that Kazunori Yamauchi. He loves to tease us. In an interview with Germany's derStandard (partially translated by develop), the man behind the Gran Turismo series says it would be "very, very improbable that GT will come out on another console." No surprise there, but then that little scamp of a developer entices us with a line about the series "perhaps [coming] to the PC. Particularly [for] the Chinese market."Of course, a PC version would be the only sane choice for the Chinese market, where the PS3 is not officially released and the PC dominates the gaming scene -- and Yamauchi didn't even confirm that such a Chinese PC version exists. But we can just imagine how this quote will morph and mutate in the hands of fanboys, until, sometime soon, someone will ardently argue that Yamauchi actually confirmed an Wii version of GT5 would be out any day now. • GT5 Prologue scores third place in Japanese charts

You know times have changed when the top three spots in Japan's software sales chart are no longer occupied by traditional fare, but rather a miasma of Mario mini-games, a balancercise board and a glorified automotive demo. Gamasutra runs down last week's top ten, highlighting Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue which made its debut in third position with approximately 116,000 units sold. Professor Layton bully, Wii Fit, found itself parking off in second position with 124,000 units after having switched places with Mario Party DS and its 180,000 attendees. Nintendo proved the overall wii-ner, with six first-party titles accounted for in the chart -- in fact, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was the only game not to be found on the Wii or DS. The two systems are expected to enjoy continued good fortune in the hardware sales chart due for release tomorrow.%Gallery-4884%

  • Lots of Gran Turismo 5 details translated out of love for you

If you've been itching for some Gran Turismo 5 news to gawk at, let us direct you to a thread over at NeoGAF. Not only are there a lot of great screenshots from the official website, but user Doctor_No took it upon himself (or herself!) to translate the latest Famitsu interview with Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi. We'll detail the finer points below, but all of them are worth looking over. GT5 will be playable at Leipzig, where multiple online features will also be announced. GT5 Prologue will be Home compatible! While called Prologue, Yamauchi says there will be options to make money, buy cars, etc. In the final build, there are ambitions to let you walk around a "town" and look at cars. We imagine this means your Home avatar checking out other people's GT5 cars. GT5 Prologue will have 40 cars and 4 tracks, totaling 8 configurations. If you use a steering wheel for the game, you can look around the cockpit in cockpit view by moving around the D-Pad. Nice. In the full game of Gran Turismo 5, you can fully customize the interior of the car. Right now, 16 cars are in each race, but in online modes, the number may shrink to 12. Any money, cars, etc. you earn in GT5 Prologue will be able to transfer over to the full Gran Turismo 5. Wow! This really seems like an ambitious title, so we're salivating to get our hands on the game as soon as possible. GT5 Prologue is rumored to launch on October 24th, so we'll wait until around then.

  • Gran Turismo 5 supposedly featuring 10,000 vehicles [Update]

[Update: the page listing the cars appears to have been removed and Sony has issued a statement regarding the list as bunk. Although the list is false, we still believe GT5 will have continued updates for their cars, although it will most likely not be 10,000 vehicles strong. We apologize for this error.]Don't get too excited when you check out the full car list for Gran Turismo 5. Read the paragraph at the top first. Initially, the game from Polyphony Digital will feature a paltry 340 cars and the others will be added in due time via downloadable content. With such a large list of cars and an already perfected driving sim, we think it's not that far of a stretch to say this is going to be the only Gran Turismo game on the PS3. Also, with such a list of cars, we're about 98% certain that damage will not be featured. Personally, we hope they include the Ford Probe GT '93, not because a certain blogger at PS3 Fanboy drives it or anything ...[via N4G]

  • Finally, some Gran Turismo 5 details surface

For those of you who've been itching to hear anything definitive on Polyphony Digital's upcoming Gran Turismo 5, we've decided to take it upon ourselves to scratch that very itch for you. From some European magazine scans posted on the internet and presumably removed, the following have been agreed upon as features confirmed for the game: All cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 4 will make their next-gen debut. After the initial release, there will be downloadable cars and tracks to enhance the experience. Four different driving views will be available. Can you name them all? All Ferrari models, including those pesky F1 racers. Some new city tracks. Online racing will be supported for anywhere between 12 and 20 drivers. During races, dynamic weather conditions will persist, forcing you to really know what you're doing. Finally, car damage. Well, that's an impressive list of features for Gran Turismo 5. It finally seems to be stepping up to the plate that competition like Forza and Project Gotham Racing set the bar on -- debatably. While many of the above features are pleasing to hear, the bit about car damage is the most intense. It will undoubtedly spark a war between people who think car damage needed to get attention in the GT franchise and those who enjoyed the game without it. Personally, adding realistic damage in a simulation will make things a lot more difficult to do. Ruining your shocks, cracking your windshield, messing up that transmission should all come into play. Sadly, that's not how it will probably work. It'll just be car damage. Ooh's and Aah's. If you can't get it right from the exterior to the interior, what's the point? Who knows, perhaps it'll be as labor-intensive as real-life maintenance conundrums.

Simulation fans will have yet another reason to look forward to Gran Turismo 5. According to an special episode of Jeuxvideo.TV, a Saleen cockpit view will be included in the game. Fans may recall the previous reiterations included a cockpit view that was more outside the car than in, allowing you to seemingly smell the fresh air and swallow bugs while strapped to the hood. Well now, the cockpit view will actually show the components inside the car as well, giving fans a chance to check out the things one would see inside a car, like a dashboard with all the cool dials and buttons, and maybe even a few air fresheners dangling from the rear-view!

We mean just that -- it's Gran Turismo HD footage. Video, due out on the PS Store this Thursday/Friday, will show a new car: the Nissan Xanavi Nismo Z. This is true, however, don't hold your breath for any GTHD updates anytime soon -- this doesn't portend what you think it does.Sony contacted CVG with this to say about the upcoming footage: "The new GTHD video is scheduled to go onto the PS Store this Friday, May 4. It's a bespoke video that was made for Nissan at the Geneva Motorshow." Sony continued, saying there's no big announcement coming and the video is just for "funsies" (not actually a quote from them) because the download has proved so popular. Sorry guys, we'll keep our eyes open for any GT5 info... whenever it comes around the bend.

The downloadable prologue to Sony's "Online Car Life Simulation" will arrive in autumn, according to French gaming site Jeux-France. Meaning, we'll see a playable Gran Turismo 5 demo (what some will tease, "Gran Turismo HD 2") hit PS3's PlayStation Store later this year.Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, as Sony insists, will be followed by the actual game in the spring of 2008 (in Europe). The demo will feature several cars and circuits, and will support online play via the Gran Turismo Network. Although unspecified, given that GTHD is free, we assume that the GT5 demo will likewise be a complimentary promotion.[Via VGB]
