'Prince of Persia' is coming back as a VR escape room

Good news, there's finally a new Prince of Persia game -- only it's not the swashbuckling platformer you were probably hoping for. Ubisoft has revealed The Dagger of Time, a VR escape room that uses the Arabian Nights-inspired universe as the setting for its two- to four-player puzzler. You're asked to manipulate time, avoid traps and otherwise use your know-how to ascend the Fortress of Time and prevent a Magi from unleashing a horde of Sand Monsters. While it'll require teamwork to complete, it's designed with a simple control scheme so that newcomers can focus on playing.

When we reviewed the GameStick Android console, one of our main concerns was how the library of titles on offer would pan out over time. Today, it's just been announced that Ubisoft will be bringing its Prince of Persia franchise to the platform. Specifically The Shadow and the Flame. This is good news for GameStick owners, and represents the first major developer to embrace the platform, though there's no official release date just yet. PlayJam (the company behind GameStick) advises that there are even more big name game houses set to get onboard too. Of course, there's still plenty of love for the indie side of things, but for those that like to ride both sides of the gaming tracks, things are looking up.

  • Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame returns on July 25

The updated and portable version of Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame will leap onto the App Store, Google Play and Amazon on July 25. However, the sands of time have worn away the two from the title, so it's just Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame now. Announced in April, the game freshens up the graphics and sound of classic platformer Price of Persia 2, with the option of virtual buttons or gesture-based controls. Ubisoft Pune, responsible for Prince of Persia Classic HD, handled development duties on the sequel. The game is priced at $2.99. %Gallery-193055%

  • New Prince of Persia on the way to iOS this summer

Here's a nice blast from the past: Ubisoft has announced new Prince of Persia game, which is a remake of the second title in the series, made specifically for smartphones and tablets. Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame is being remade as a 2.5D action title -- it seems to feature the same basic levels as the 1993 original, but the graphics are all completely updated, and there are going to be some new gameplay elements as well. It looks like a lot of fun, as you can see in the trailer below. The game's being developed by Ubisoft Pune, and it'll have either virtual sticks or tap-to-move controls, depending on your choice. The game's also designed to be more accessible, which will be nice for those of us that weren't very good at the games back in 1993. But if you want a challenge, Ubisoft says, there will be timers on all the levels, so you can try to complete them as quickly as possible if you want. [via 148Apps]

  • Footage of Ubisoft project 'Osiris' surfaces, 'no longer moving forward'

A mock-up trailer for a Ubisoft project titled Osiris has been uncovered. The trailer was uploaded five months ago by composer Mark Kilian (Rendition), who purports that it was commissioned by Ubisoft Montreal. The video itself is cobbled together from live-action motion capture sessions and concept art. It takes place in an Egyptian setting, featuring a street brawl, a magically summoned swarm of insects and a rather beefy protagonist. The video shares some similarities with screenshots that were leaked last year, which many thought to be taken from a new Prince of Persia (a claim series creator Jordan Mechner later refuted).Whatever Osiris was – a new IP or a Prince of Persia sequel – it's not a Ubisoft project anymore, the publisher told Polygon. "The content in question was from a Ubisoft project that is no longer moving forward," a spokesperson said.

The SNES version of Prince of Persia arrives on the Virtual Console in North America. We'd forgotten this was happening in the interim between the December ESRB rating and today, so this is, like every Wii Virtual Console release, a pleasant and unexpected surprise.Speaking of surprises, DSiWare's Crazy Hunter is about a crocodile building a goat tower to reach the sky, in order to capture hens who lay golden eggs. It gets weirder from there, actually.

  • Jukebox Heroes Extra: An interview with Inon Zur

Did you grow up watching Power Rangers? I didn't, but then again, I was slightly over the age demographic there. But it tickles me pink (ranger) that the guy who got his start doing background music for one of the cheesiest shows of all time ended up scoring many of the greatest video games of all time. Israeli-born Inon Zur was hard at work in the film, TV, and video game industry in the '90s, but it wasn't until 2002's Icewind Dale II that his music and fame started to climb to a whole different level. Zur started winning awards left and right for his work on Dragon Age, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia, and Men of Valor, among other titles. MMO players might not know it, Zur's deft hand is all over the place. He's composed several EverQuest and EverQuest II expansions, the now-defunct Exteel, last year's RIFT and most recently, TERA. As a driving force behind MMO music, Inon Zur has a unique perspective on what makes for a great audio experience. Want to hear more? Us too. We have a great interview with Zur as well as a few select pieces of his works after the jump.

  • Rumor: Screenshot of Prince of Persia reboot leaked

Prince of Persia forumite blueobelix has posted what he asserts is a "leaked screenshot" from a Prince of Persia game, labeled "POP_ZERO_2." Judging from the image, the game is a reboot that boots the series all the way into Egypt, and features a more muscular, darker-skinned protagonist. If authentic, it's clearly an early image, unless this new Prince has the ability to make bystanders hover. The name "Prince of Persia Zero" has been used internally as a name for a reboot. Former art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête used the name in an interview with CVG, in reference to either the released 2008 game or a cancelled "modern" spinoff (it isn't clear which reboot he names as such in the context). In either case, "Zero 2" would suggest another spinoff or reboot.

  • Prince of Persia source code freed from floppies, posted online

You wouldn't think it would take more than two weeks to extract some source code from a pile of 3.5-inch floppies and post it online, but getting files from 1989 to play nice with a MacBook Air is no simple feat. That's why we're so appreciative of Jordan Mechner, who put the time and effort into freeing his creation, Prince of Persia, from its magnetic prison. If you want to try and build the platforming classic for your own system, hit up the source link. Or, just wait for someone else to do it for you -- we're sure it wont take long for some friendly binary formats to hit the web.
