  • Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia HD trilogies coming March 22 on PS3 Blu-ray disc

Despite being a franchise that's all about sneaking, it comes as no surprise that the first three Splinter Cell games are getting HD facelifts for PS3 -- after all, the Prince of Persia trilogy already has (on PSN, at least). Ubisoft has announced today that both "remastered" series will hit retail on Blu-ray disc March 22 for $40 apiece. Splinter Cell Classic Trilogy HD will include the original Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, all three offering 3D modes for compatible televisions. The Prince of Persia Classic Trilogy HD disc contains Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. While the games run at a higher resolution, they're identical to their original releases underneath the HD sheen, meaning any bugs that plagued them are present, too. The Splinter Cell collection will also be released on March 22 on PSN for the same $40 price tag, along with a digital Prince of Persia trilogy "bundle" for the same price. Currently, the three PoP classics are going for $15 a pop as separate downloads on the PlayStation Store.

Rental service GameFly has a listing for Prince of Persia Trilogy HD with a March 22, 2011 release date. The game was previously announced as being disc-based only for Europe, Middle East and African territories. All three games were released in North America via digital distribution on the PlayStation Network. We've contacted Ubisoft for comment, but the publisher has yet to respond. GameFly tells us it hasn't changed its listing policy, which means it will "simply post information as it is supplied to [GameFly] by the publishers."

Of course, considering the Bee Gees track pack hits Rock Band 3 this week, we're not sure why we're even bothering talking about anything else. We all know that's what you've been waiting for all these years. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

Well, that didn't take very long. A high-definition update of Ubisoft Montreal's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network starting today. Launching in Europe later this week as a single Blu-ray disc, the remastered Prince of Persia Trilogy will be brought to the American PlayStation store in three separate flavors: original, smoldering and nutty. According to the PlayStation Blog, Warrior Within (that game they made because you didn't buy Sands of Time in the first place) and The Two Thrones will launch on PSN in December. All three adventures boast 720p resolution, Trophies, 3D support and $14.99 price tags. That's $45 for the original trilogy -- and you can probably find The Forgotten Sands in a bargain bin if you're looking for even more of the classic Prince's elegant environmental puzzles.

  • Digital Prince of Persia trilogy, Splinter Cell listed in Ubisoft financial report [update]

Ubisoft had a pretty remarkable first half as far as its intangible offerings are concerned. In its recently published financial report, the company shows sales of DLC and downloadable games increased 100 percent year-over-year in the first half of fiscal 2011. The report chalks this success up to well-received blockbusters like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot claims was the best-selling PSN title of the quarter. Ubisoft will apparently set more of its sights on the virtual market in the future, as a slide on the financial report (PDF) lists the company's downloadable titles; the list includes digital versions of the Prince of Persia trilogy and an unidentified Splinter Cell title (or, perhaps, titles). These mentions line up pretty well with a series of reports claiming that the two series' are receiving HD remakes on the PS3. Ubisoft has already confirmed that the Prince of Persia trilogy is real, but will only be released in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Australia) territories, later this week. Perhaps the company has changed its strategy (or has a different strategy for other regions), and is planning on a more widespread release over digital channels -- this would also explain why we haven't heard any hubbub about 360 versions of the two trilogies, as their respective download sizes would likely prevent them from slipping under the 2GB limit set for XBLA. We've contacted Ubisoft for a comment on the references to the two releases. Update: During the Ubisoft investor's conference call, CEO Yves Guillemot explained "We plan to come with more games for full digital distribution, on XBLA/PSN. Either with current games like Beyond Good & Evil, the first three Splinter Cells, and the Prince of Persia trilogy." Sure enough, an email accompanying the call lists The Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones as separate PSN releases coming sometime this quarter. No pricing, release date information, or any info about Splinter Cell was mentioned by Guillemot, nor included in said email.

  • Report: Prince of Persia, Mortal Kombat HD box art revealed; several HD collections incoming

French site Jeux Video has obtained what is believed to be box art of the unannounced Prince of Persia Trilogy and Mortal Kombat Kollection. Furthermore, it also reportedly has release date information for Splinter Cell Trilogy, Rayman Trilogy and Tom Clancy's Trilogy (Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six); all for PS3. According to the site's retail source, Mortal Kombat has an alleged launch date of November 18, while the rest are dated November 4. Previously, the Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell trilogy packs popped up on Amazon France and a British retail site with different release dates. If this keeps up, can we just spare the publishers the effort of not announcing these bundles by supposing every major series will be HD-ified?

  • Prince of Persia movie opens with $37.8M domestically [Update]

Update: IMDB has updated its projected totals for the weekend box office to include the Memorial Day holiday, increasing ticket totals of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time from $30.2 million to $37.8 million for the four-day weekend. The increase pushes the video game-based flick to second place ahead of Sex and the City 2. Original: If you only considered its current Metacritic ranking, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time could be called the first disaster movie of the summer season. According to IMDb, the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced time manipulation romp cracked third place in the US with $30.2 million in its opening weekend, behind first-place Shrek Forever After ($43.3 million) and Sex and the City 2: Electric Boogaloo with $32.1 million. While Bruckheimer may have been wishing for Pirates of the Caribbean-style opening numbers, Box Office Mojo reports that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the third largest box office opening ever for a video game-based film. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Pokemon: The First Movie, currently own the first and second spot respectively in that extremely specific category. Internationally the Prince fared better, bringing in $59 million from overseas theaters and capturing first place. So far, The Sands of Time has earned a total of $87.5 in the two weeks it has been released overseas. [Via BigDownload]

  • PC 'deluxe edition' of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands includes Sands of Time

    05.26.2010

If you're considering a purchase of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands on PC, why not get a version that comes with one or two extra games? A pre-ordered copy of the Digital Deluxe Edition, available on Steam, includes a map, a soundtrack, two extra skins, and, most importantly, a free copy of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to play while you wait for the June 8 release of Forgotten Sands. You'll also get a free copy of Sands of Time's sequel, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. In fact, you'll get that freebie on Steam whether you buy the $60 deluxe version or the $50 regular version. The only reason you may not want to jump on either of these deals is that playing these games right before Forgotten Sands may make the new game seem even more lackluster.

  • Prince of Persia movie LEGO toys get a block-buster commercial

We've seen so many instances where the LEGO toy brand has infiltrated the world of video games over the past few years -- that's why it's so downright refreshing to see the tables get turned. Just past the jump is a commercial for that new line of wonderbricks based on the upcoming film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It's full of assassins, traps that are ready to spring on a teeny little Jake Gyllenhaal Gyllenblock, but, strangely, nary a trace of the slow-motion -- which is so prevalent in the film and games. Though your mind may immediately wander to the possibility of a LEGO video game based on Jordan Mechner's action-platforming franchise, we'd like to remind you that LEGO bricks are, in and of themselves, completely rad. LEGO bricks based on one of our favorite game series are doubly so. [Via Kotaku]

We've been doing this Joystiq thing for a while now and, after sifting through years of traffic data, we think we finally know what you're all here for: shirtless Jake Gyllenhaal. It's okay, we're big fans of the guy's pecs, lats, abs, and peclatabs too. As such, we knew we had to post this behind-the-scenes look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, not for its juicy interview bits nor to see the picturesque locales where the crew filmed, but for those few seconds of Gyllenhaal in all his shirtless glory. The video is right after the break. You're entirely welcome, internet. [Via Latino Review]

  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands fills in gaps before Warrior Within; new details revealed in developer interview

During a recent Ubisoft preview event, Michael McIntyre, director of level design for Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, talked to Joystiq about the new sequel to the old trilogy, establishing its connection to the Sands of Time game series and the Bruckheimer film. The Forgotten Sands is a side story, based in the Sands of Time universe, bridging the seven-year gap between the original Sands of Time game and its sequel, Warrior Within. Clearly, Ubisoft has positioned the next game to piggyback on the Bruckheimer blockbuster and ideally generate renewed sales for the brand (which underperformed in its 2008 iteration). Forgotten Sands is also an opportunity for Ubisoft to finally justify the Prince's remarkable transformation from carefree hero to brooding, emo warrior. Continue reading for our full interview with Michael McIntyre -- after the break -- in which he reveals new (and rewinding revisited) elements in the game and the return of a familiar voice.

Ubisoft has just announced a new Prince of Persia -- but it's not a sequel to 2008's polarizing adventure (if desired, add unhappy emoticons to sentence). Instead, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will continue the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time trilogy series, complete with "many of the fan-favorite elements" and "new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand." Oh, and an accompanying film! You can catch the game's premiere trailer on Spike TV's Video Game Awards on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8 p.m. EST. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is scheduled for release on "consoles and handhelds" in May 2010.

Download the HD trailer The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time movie won't be in theaters until May 2010, but the marketing winds are already picking up with the release of the first full-length trailer (above) -- and it looks ... kinda good. What's more, the original game's creator, Jordan Mechner, has filed an application for the trademark, "Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands," suggesting that a new game could be in the works. More recent remarks, like those found in this Q&A, seem to indicate that an announcement from Ubisoft is coming shortly. We attended a group Q&A session with Mechner and movie producer Jerry Bruckheimer last week during the unveiling of the trailer and heard about the legacy of the franchise, casting of Jake Gyllenhaal, plans for a movie sequel, Easter eggs hidden on-screen, and hints of a new game. • Prince of Persia movie trailer looks ... kind of good

Download the HD trailer The first official trailer for Jerry Bruckheimer's The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now up for all the internet to see [update: we've added our embedded version above -- and read our in-depth analysis right here]. The long and short of it, it actually looks pretty good. Of course, the trailer is comprised mainly of quick cuts of action and narration filled with cliched adventure story tropes. Then again, as a video game adaptation, maybe that's to be expected. Still, there doesn't appear to be anything overtly awful just yet, so the hope is still alive. If Bruckheimer can turn a theme park ride into a successful film franchise, maybe, just maybe, he can do it with a game too.

We were invited out to Jerry Bruckheimer Films earlier this week to watch the trailer for The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The good news? It looks like a Jerry Bruckheimer film. The bad news? Well, It looks like a Jerry Bruckheimer film. He's put together a formula that combines stars -- Jake Gyllenhaal, Alfred Molina, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley -- a lot of bombast and CGI. What usually comes out is a loud, boisterous film that makes a lot of money at the box office. Not that there's anything wrong with that! The only hitch is that it's a videogame adaptation, and those just never seem to turn out very well. It certainly doesn't help that Ben Kingsley, the one who starred in the ill-fated and ill-conceived film version of BloodRayne, has returned in another villainous role. Still, we have to admit that what we saw (reminder: just a trailer) looks to be an exciting jaunt through swashbuckling adventure. Read on for the highlights -- and take your time. The movie that doesn't come out until May 2010.

It's been quite some time since we've heard anything from the folks behind the upcoming Prince of Persia movie adaptation. Lucky for us, the film's producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently decided to let some footage of the film slip during an interview (found after the break). When asked what Jake Gyllenhaal brings to the film, Bruckheimer says, "Well, he's very handsome." That being said, consider this an early warning for you and your elderly mother -- shot after shot of those stunning pecs and that dastardly smile could result in some unfortunate medical complications. You've been warned!Oh, and as for the movie itself ... we'll just have to wait and see if it's any good when it arrives on July 10th not-soon-enough.[Thanks, Sean!]

The fine purveyors of DRM-free classics at GoG.com have announced an agreement with Ubisoft, which sees good old(ish) games like Beyond Good & Evil and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time added to the downloadable lineup. Joining action journalist Jade and the time-swindling prince are ... the aeroplanes of IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946! We guess they weren't really going for much of a theme outside of all three costing $9.99 each.Other Ubisoft titles slated to hit the PC service "in the coming weeks" include Heroes of Might and Magic, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and Not Tom Clancy's Far Cry.
