  • Double Agent and Vegas for $39.99

Major Nelson brings word that Best Buy has Rainbow Six: Vegas on sale for $39.99. We checked it out and found out that Splinter Cell: Double Agent is available for $39.99 as well. If you've been waiting to pick up either one of these games, you could do a lot worse than a $20 discount. While you're at it, you may want to pick up a copy of Project 8 or Madden 07, which are on sale for the slightly less attractive price of $49.99. As an added bonus, you can get an additional $10 off of any of these titles if you pre-order Lost Planet. Vegas for $29? Not bad. Anyone else find any good deals today?[Via Major Nelson]

  • Project 8: ragdoll physics gone wild [update 1]

Update: Several readers have informed this non-Tony Hawk playing blogger that Project 8 does have a bail mode. Very well then, at least the video is still funny. One of the hellspawn from Joystiq tipped us off to a video of Project 8 yesterday. The video is basically just a long reel of spectacular bails. Seriously, these bails take skill. So much skill in fact, we think Neversoft should borrow a page from Flatout and consider giving bails their own game mode. Just imagine it: "perform a bail and make your body fly through the 'O' in that sign." We'd play it ... we'd play it 'til our eyes bled. Check out the bone crunching, spleen bursting action after the break.

  • New Skate shots, can it topple Tony?

Courtesy of our French friends at Xboxygen, we now have some screenshots of EA's Skate to go along with the shaky cam footage that Joystiq ran last month. In short, the shots looks amazing -- then again, so did the target renders for next gen Madden, and we all know how that turned out. Still, EA knows a successful genre when they see it, and it's up to them to exploit it try and make it better. The obvious question is whether or not Skate can hold a candle to the current king of skating the Tony Hawk series. Given the reception of Project 8, that might be a tough order to fill. Watch Joystiq's video after the break and join the discussion.

  • Activision's CoD3 and THP8 not hitting 720p

Someone call Activision and let 'em know that 720p means 1280x720, please. Games-Aktuell, a German gaming outlet, has discovered that Call of Duty 3 and Tony Hawk's Project 8 are not running at a 720p high-def resolution. When the tests were run, CoD3 was shown to be running at 1040x620 pixels and THP8 at 1040x584 pixels. The pixel drop reflects a resolution drop of 30% and 34%, respectively. The resolution drop could be assumed to help keep framerates up, but THP8 reportedly has framerate problems. So what's up? Activision Germany told Cynamite.de that they weren't aware of the problem and are looking into it. Lower resolution is not something that normally just happens by accident, but given the recent quality assurance problems with CoD3, these resolution problems may just be another woeful mistake. If intentional, why the resolution drop in THP8 when the 360 is clearly powerful enough to handle something like Gears of War just fine? We've included a machine-translated link of the original German post.

Let's see . . . games shipping this week . . . let's have a look. Hmmmm, we've got World Championship Poker: All In. Not bad, not bad. Let's see what else, Viva Piñata, ooh that's a pretty big one. And, oh, there's Call of Duty 3 and Project 8, those are huge games, too. We've got History Channel Civil War and Blitz: the League, those might be pretty good. Anything else? Let's see . . . nope. No, that's it, nothing else. Oh wait, there's another one here at the bottom. Um . . . Gears of . . . what is it, War? Is that it? Is that a game about Richard Gere? If it is, they spelled his name wrong.

  • Wiimote vs. Sixaxis, Round 1: Downhill Jam vs. Project 8

While Downhill Jam and Project 8 are two very different takes on the Tony Hawk license, they share enough commonalities (ollies, grinds, rotations, grabs, etc.) to warrant a Wiimote vs. Sixaxis comparison.Downhill Jam (Wii) and Project 8 (PS3) both feature motion-controlled skating, providing the gaming public with an ideal opportunity to judge the Wiimote and Sixaxis against each other. We'll have to wait until after November 19th to conduct hands-on trials, but a handy clip (see embedded video) has been spliced together giving us a preview of the showdown to come.

  • P8 demo alive and slo-mo kicking (and UMK3!)

Somewhere in the dark of night, the Project 8 demo finally slipped onto Xbox Live Marketplace. We were at the movies (the Prestige kicked ass) so, we're not sure if the demo made it onto Marketplace before midnight as promised or not. Of course, we're sure some of you were watching for it, and know exactly when it came out.And now, the other good news: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is now available on Xbox Live Arcade for 800 points. We're not sure if someone screwed up or if someone's is just making amends with all the gamers who wanted their P8 demo earlier, but there you have it. Hell, maybe they actually meant to release it on a weekend instead of a Wednesday. After all, MS works in mysterious ways. We're downloading both right now. Anybody tried these yet? Are they awesome? Not awesome?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Still no Project 8 demo, what gives?

The hours keep ticking by and the promised Project 8 demo is still a no show. Plenty of companies have gotten into hot water (here's looking at you 3D Realms) for missing promised demos, but this one had its own press release and everything. We would have figured that all the certification and whatnot was already taken care of, especially if someone authorized a press release. Still, there are many hours left in the day. Keep the faith, fanboys.

  • Tony Hawk P8 demo coming tomorrow!

You heard it, folks. A Tony Hawk's Project 8 demo will be available on Marketplace tomorrow, October 20th. The demo will give you access to many of the games new features, including the much lauded "Nail the Trick" -- think The Matrix meets skateboarding. Also accessible will be the "Filmer" mode, in which you follow a cameraman and complete whatever tricks he wants to see. As if that weren't enough, there will also be what Activision calls "Spot Challenges," which are random goals that can be completed in the game world. All in all, it sounds like a pretty meaty demo. It's also the only place you'll be playing Project 8 for quite a while. We've said it before and we'll say it again, you gotta love Xbox Live.

Team Xbox has the first gameplay shots from Tony Hawk's Project 8 and they look pretty...um...gnarly. Most would agree the last Tony Hawk game didn't do next-gen justice to the long-running series. Let's hope this Hawk has enough tricks to end Tony's video game career on high note, before he starts turning up with a wheelchair rather than a skateboard.[Thanks X Budd]
