Sony adds cloud storage for game saves to PSN Plus subscriptions
Alright, it's official, Sony's PlayStation Plus subscription just became a thing worth owning with the new addition of online storage for game saves. It's coming with v3.60 of the PS3 firmware, which we're promised to receive tomorrow, March 10th. You'll be allowed to stash up to 150MB of PlayStation 3 game progress data in Sony's make.believe cloud, which is not exactly a staggering amount, but then it's not like those save files take up that much space. The major attraction that we see here is being able to just plug your account details into any PS3 around the globe and continue your questing in Dragon Age II as if you're still at home. PlayStation Plus announced at E3: $50 / year
And here it is! PlayStation Plus has been announced. As we suspected, the PlayStation Network itself will not change, while power users can upgrade for $50 a year or $18 for three months. And to sweeten the deal, your first three months are free. And what do you get for your hard earned dough? Tons of premium content, including "hundreds of dollars of products" throughout the year, early access to betas, and Qore. Sony is also indicating that Plus subscribers will be able to send voice messages to other gamers to invite them to play, even if they've made the foolish decision to not subscribe to Plus. Naturally, though, they won't be able to reply in kind unless they too pony up the cash.
PlayStation Network down for 'regularly scheduled maintenance' -- RDR posses take the day off
Wondering why your murderous, alcohol-fueled rampage across the old Southwest has been interrupted? The PlayStation Network is taking a personal day for maintenance (it happens sometimes, even on services we pay for, so insert PSN+ rumors here) from 8 a.m. (PST) to 8:30 p.m. Turning on your PS3 for some Red Dead Redemption or other gaming in the interim displays the above message so for now, all of your Home friends will have to wait. In the meantime, Netflix streaming is still a go so queue up 3:10 to Yuma (the original version, of course) and give that tired horse a break. Sony PSN+ rumors thicken for E3: new features for paid users, free users can still play online
Our BFFs over at Joystiq have what seems to be a pretty solid line on PSN+, with multiple sources verifying features mostly in line with what was gleaned from that survey last year. Lucky for us, most of the features seem to have to do with giving new features to paying users, instead of taking away functionality from the existing free service. Notables include exclusive DLC, PSP Minis, and PSone Classics, "first hour" demo access, Sony Protection Plan service, and cross-game voice chat. The sources seem to be less clear on pricing for all these goodies, but someone tossed out a speculative $9.99. What everyone does seem to agree on is that we should be seeing this announced in full at Sony's E3 media briefing a few weeks from now, so start stashing those Hamiltons!
