‘Arms’ is the successor to ‘Punch Out’ the Nintendo Switch needs

The original Punch Out may be heralded as a classic 8-bit NES game, but it's one I didn't play until I was in college. I'd heard it mentioned as I grew up but always dismissed it out of hand. Sports games, particularly those with celebrity endorsements, meant nothing to me as a child. When I eventually picked up a battered copy at a local flea market, I discovered the game was a masterpiece of simple, but challenging, gameplay. My experience with Arms on the Nintendo Switch is almost identical. It looked underwhelming until, of course, I played it.

Alongside today's impressive earnings report, Nintendo announced that long-serving employee Genyo Takeda is stepping down as company director this June. Holding the title of representative director and also sitting alongside Miyamoto as "Technology Fellow", Takeda has played a key role in defining both Nintendo's hardware and software.

  • Crochet-Out!! with Little Mac and Mike Tyson

We can't help but love Little Mac, the quintessential underdog. If seeing him on your virtual console isn't enough, though, how about seeing him around your neck in the winter? You may have also noticed that this scarf has Mike Tyson's big mug on it, so you won't have to settle for Mr. Dream. Realistically, we know you won't buy this -- after all, the scarf is a whopping $175 on Etsy. Still, we admire the craftsmanship that went into Beatboxtaun's crocheting, and we hope you do, too. We only wish we had such skills ourselves, so that we didn't have to drool over these kinds of things on Etsy all the time.In our opinion, this definitely beats out the Punch-Out mat for the best craft featuring Little Mac (that we know of).[Via Technabob]

Craftster user obesolete rendered this extremely familiar scene from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (or, as it appears on the Virtual Console and in the later console release, Not Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!) in cross-stitch. Bald Bull has just totally smashed the extremely undersized Little Mac, stripping him (we imagine) of the star he'd been saving up for an opportune moment.Cross-stitch is a good medium for game crafts, because, much like Perler beads, it naturally lends itself to designs formed from small squares. NES pixels, of course, translate perfectly. That doesn't prevent us from feeling a bit subversive sometimes for using traditional crafting methods to render weird, nontraditional stuff like game screens. No doubt obesolete got the same giggle out of doing this.

  • Punch Out's Little Mac to appear in Smash Bros. Brawl

The green gloves, the at-the-ready stance, that uppercut ... it can't be! It is! It's Little Mac, the boxer that (ocassionaly) beat Mike Tyson in Punch-Out, set to appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl! The only way we could be more excited is if he was a playable character. Yeah, you read that right. Apparently, much like Rocky Balboa, the past-his-prime sweet scientist can only handle brief bouts before risking his health.OK, so maybe he's only going to be an Assist Trophy more than an actual fighter, but it's hard for us to not get a little excited (read: teary-eyed and nostalgic) about seeing Little Mac digitized for a new generation to enjoy. As it says on the official Smash Bros. blog: "Resurrecting this legend for the current generation is something we can all enjoy just a bit." We couldn't agree more.

Let's try to follow our logic: in Rocky IV, Sylvester Stallone took on Ivan Drago, the Soviet Sensation, and his victory was implicitly a victory for the United States of America. It's a US holiday. Therefore, watching a Japanese commercial for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is patriotic.Got that? Really? We're not sure how, it makes no sense. Anyways, video embedded after the break.

  • The Short Cuts entry that better freaking win

We thought we'd given up posting Nintendo Short Cuts entries as a veritable flood of applicants submitted their works shortly before the deadline, but sister site Joystiq posted one that's simply way, way too good. The above "movie trailer" for the NES classic Punch-Out!! is rife with 8-bit references, as the creators shrewdly blend recognizable game artwork into live-action scenes. The acting (especially Von Kaiser's) is top-notch, production values sky-high, and the music made us replay the last minute of the trailer nine times just to rock out. If Hollywood really knew what was up, this would have been made instead of the lukewarm Rocky Balboa last year. We officially stamp our vote of approval on Team Awesome, and wish them the best of luck. They probably won't need it.

  • Punch-Out!! leaves HDTVs down for the count

Many who've downloaded the Virtual Console's Punch-Out!! release are reporting that the boxing game isn't playing well with their HDTVs. Timing is paramount if you want to dodge punches and have your own jabs connect, but the HDTV response lag that sometimes occurs has a habit of knocking Little Mac's bloodied face onto the canvas, leaving him too dazed to even focus his eyes on the mouthguard dropped inches away.Gamers with SDTV's haven't been experiencing any lag between their controllers and the onscreen fight, and explanations for the decreased response time lean towards blaming the televisions, so Nintendo doesn't seem to be at fault this time. Have you noticed any HDTV lag with Punch-Out!! or your other Virtual Console purchases?(We know that Mike Tyson isn't in the VC release of Punch-Out!, but we saw the above comic at The Librarianist, and couldn't stop ourselves from using it!)

Seriously, how long have you been waiting for this Virtual Console release? Since late November, right? Well, we've been waiting for it too, and although it's not the game we all grew up with, it's relatively the same title. The other titles available are a pair of games we all knew would be emerging on the service, so no surprises this week. The games available for download after 9 a.m. Pacific Time are: Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES, 1 player, 500 points) Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 points) Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 points) As usual, check back later for our wrap-up post.

Today's Virtual Console releases all have one thing in common: a love for violence to the head. Whether it be Bonk using his noggin as a weapon, Mac delivering that eleventh uppercut to Glass Joe or Akira Yuki landing three extra backfists on the nose of his opponent, these releases are sure to spark violent tendencies in children under the age of two and one-third.Punch Out!, already out in Europe, is Nintendo's entrant for today's triumvirate of releases. The full serving, available on US Virtual Consoles at 9 a.m. PT, includes: Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (NES, 1 player, 500 points) Bonk's Revenge (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 points) Virtua Fighter 2 (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 points) [Image Credit]

  • Japan's VC announcements for April: Boxers, ninjas, and punkic cyborgs

We're jealous of the Japanese Virtual Console selection already. It's even worse now that we've seen the newly-announced games for April. There is some really great stuff coming out next month-- at least it means there's a chance we'll get it at some point. The new games include awesome selections like Final Fight (SNES), Puyo Puyo Tsuu (Genesis), Punch-Out!! (NES), and Star Fox 64 (N64). Really, the whole list is packed with awesomeness. Of special interest to us: Ninja Gaiden (NES), which we pretty much don't need to say anything about, because who hasn't played Ninja Gaiden, and Air Zonk, the futuristic Bonk spinoff that exemplifies the term "cute-'em-up".

  • Europe gets Punch Out, other virtual console classics first

OK, we're used to Japan getting cool stuff before us. That's OK -- they saved the game industry after Atari botched things up, so it's only fair that they get Final Fantasy and Gundam games early. But now we hear that Europe is getting Virtual Console games like Punch Out, Legend of the Mystical Ninja and Dragon Curse before us red-blooded Americans. Doesn't Nintendo know that Europe is supposed to get everything last? Maybe they can take some pointers from Sony on that score.I suppose we shouldn't be too mad about this, since all these games have been available for other systems for over a decade. But it's the principle of the thing. We declared our independence from European mastery back in 1776, and yet those old-worlders still get to lord their downloadable classics over us hundreds of years later. It's just not right!

  • Nintendo refreshes Punch-Out!! patent, provides hope

On January 11th, Nintendo refreshed their patent on Punch-Out!! through the United States Patent and Trademark Office, all but confirming a future presence for the title on the Wii. The likelihood of an original game hitting the Wii is high as Nintendo originally filed the patent on April 1st, 2005, under the category "electronic game discs," leaving those speculating on a VC release of the game in the dark once again. So, if Nintendo were to put out a new Punch-Out!! game on the Wii, would you want it to control like Wii Sports: Boxing? Or do you have a better control scheme in mind?
