Ubisoft plans to improve ‘Ghost Recon Breakpoint’ with a month of bug fixes

By most accounts, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the latest game from Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft, is a broken mess. Thanks to its unfinished state, the game performed so poorly in its first week of availability that Ubisoft recently delayed most of its major 2020 releases. However, in a blog post published on Monday, the publisher detailed how it plans to fix the game.

Ubisoft is delaying several major games on its upcoming slate. Watch Dogs: Legion had been set for March 6th and Gods & Monsters had a release date of February 25th, while Rainbow Six Quarantine had also been earmarked for the first quarter of 2020. Those games will now arrive in the second half of next year.

Ubisoft can't resist the siren's call of introducing Fortnite-like Battle Passes in Rainbow Six: Siege. On top of unveiling the details of Year 4's third season (more on that in a bit), the company has outlined plans for Battle Passes in its tactical shooter. The first phase will be a free "Mini Battle Pass" that has players earning Battle Points to unlock tiers and all-important rewards, such as a Harry Chibi charm if you complete the Pass. The real focus, of course, is the paid tier arriving in the fourth season.

  • Xbox One 'Rainbow Six Siege' will come with both 'Vegas' games

To accompany today's news that Xbox One will soon be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games, Ubisoft just announced that Rainbow Six: Vegas and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 will be free for anyone that buys the latest game in the franchise, Rainbow Six: Siege. Although no one has explained exactly how this'll work, all Xbox 360 games will need to be downloaded (rather than played by disc), so you'd assume Seige will arrive with download codes for both titles. Ubi is the second developer to announce such a deal today, as Bethesda is giving away Fallout 3 with Xbox One copies of Fallout 4. Hopefully this becomes a trend of sorts -- it'd make a nice change from having to buy all those "definitive" editions, wouldn't it?

  • How a green hostage named Gary shaped Rainbow Six Siege

In developing Rainbow Six Siege, with gameplay centered around protecting or rescuing a hostage, Ubisoft looked to the real world for inspiration and guidance. That's the subject illustrated by the latest edition of "Behind the Wall," a series of behind-the-scenes looks at the game, published by Ubisoft. "We actually had some GIGN (French special forces outfit Groupe d'Intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale) members come visit the office to meet with us and play the game first-hand to verify that we were shaping the experience accurately," the post reads. "While a lot of people on our team are veteran FPS developers, at the end of the day we're just gamers and consulting with the real operators helps make sure that we're doing it right. We get to ask them a lot of questions and get great feedback." Siege's developers tested this early with a dummy model - a muscular male with a flat green texture referred to as Gary. "[Gary] became the new focal point of each round and people seemed to actually care about him. As the matches would proceed, dev team members would rally for Gary's sake, and speak about him after the rounds as if he were another player in the game," the Behind the Wall article states. "The objective became central to the memories and stories created while playing a round, something that had never happened before." We'll see how attached players become to the final product when Rainbow Six Siege launches next year. [Image: Ubisoft]

The big three console manufacturers aren't the only ones having all the fun at E3; Ubisoft and Electronic Arts are known to get in on the party as well. These two publishers can do many things, but one thing they can't do is take you back in time in the event that you missed their press conferences. • Declassified: Ubisoft's 'Rainbow 6: Patriots' goes back to the drawing board

Ubisoft's Laurent Detoc admits Ubisoft has had to scrap Rainbow Six: Patriots and take the game back to the drawing board. "We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn't working. So [they had] to start again," Detoc told IGN. "Rainbow had to be remade," he went on, saying it's "one of those examples where you try, it doesn't work, you try again. If it doesn't work, we're not going to bring it to you." Detoc also specifically called out next-gen consoles as possible recipients for the new Rainbow Six game, though that's admittedly something that's been on Ubisoft's mind for over a year. "Could it become a shooter with another name in the end, because the team doesn't want to do counter-terrorist guys? Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That's possible," Detoc added. Rainbox Six: Patriots, first announced on the cover of Game Informer in 2011, has presumably been in development for over two years now. A year after the announcement, Ubisoft restructured the team building Patriots and decided to keep the setting that focused so heavily on the moral grey area of counter-terrorism.

Both the reports of an early concept video leaked this past June and the web domain acquisitions which pointed at Ubisoft's next installment in the Rainbow Six franchise have proven authentic: Game Informer just announced its December issue will focus on Rainbow 6: Patriots. The title, which is tentatively scheduled to launch on 360, PS3 and PC in 2013, prominently features the compelling (and presumably controversial) moral dilemmas seen in the video from earlier this year. Creative director David Sears told Game Informer that in addition to that new "narrative direction," the game will feature "all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love." You can watch an expanded version of that video from June on Game Informer -- just be forewarned, it's kind of upsetting. Terrorists are mean, you guys. %Gallery-138341%

  • The next Rainbow Six game is probably titled 'Patriots'

Fusible spotted Ubisoft's domain-name registration for rainbowsixpatriots.com and rainbow6patriots.com, and the title has been corroborated by NeoGAF user -BLITZ-, with additional information expected to hit Xbox World Magazine next month. Previous reports said Rainbow Six: Patriots will be a lesson in the morality behind terrorism and those attempting to thwart it, which fits the title quite well. It would be awkward if it were called Rainbow Six: That Was Probably Just A Car Backfiring; Go Back To Bed.

  • Report: Ubisoft's next Rainbow Six to focus on moral dilemmas

Kotaku reports that it recently checked out an early video demonstration for an upcoming entry in Ubisoft's long-dormant tactical shooter franchise, Rainbow Six -- from which the image above was supposedly culled. According to the report, the game tasks the elite unit with stopping the threat of a homegrown terrorist cell from visiting destruction upon New York City; a goal which will present the player with a multitude of frequent moral dilemmas. One sequence of the demo apparently puts players in the shoes of a kidnapping victim who must hold down a trigger to keep an explosive vest from detonating. Later in the demo, the player shoots his way to the victim (either killing or incapacitating his enemies), and then must decide between risking the lives of everyone else on the bridge, or tossing the poor sod into the river below. It sounds interesting -- but according to Kotaku, Ubisoft is still on the fence about whether these moral decisions will make it into the final cut of the game. We've contacted Ubisoft about the report, and will keep our eyes peeled for the reported video. We're also going to go play a few rounds of Terrorist Hunt, because man, we've got the itch.

In a recent interview with Dutch gaming news site Control Online (that is to say, the site itself is Dutch -- it doesn't exclusively cover the booming Dutch video game industry), Ubisoft's Tom Clancy brand manager Michel Verheijdt explained "at this moment I'm working on two Tom Clancy games which have just gone in development." He remained tight lipped about the identities of the two franchises, warning that if he exposes any more info, he'll "have to send Sam Fisher after you." Fortunately, Joystiq was able to get the scoop on these two games, and you'll never believe what they are. For the first time in ... hold on a second. Someone's at the door. Hello? Who are you, and -- hey, why are you grabbing our neck? This doesn't seem very safe, begoggled, gruff-voiced stranger. [Via Eurogamer]
