A quiet morning at TUAW Headquarters (located in scenic Wellsboro, PA, home of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon); we're all pooped from yesterday's Talk Like a Pirate festivities. Time for a quick update on one of our favorite web authoring apps, RapidWeaver: version 3.6.3 is out, featuring Greatly improved memory usage when exporting websites Fixed issues with bold/color attributes and the main view displaying incorrectly Option-Double Clicking on photos now opens the files in a Photo Album Plus more (including all the changes from the 3.6.3 public beta). You can now share your love for RapidWeaver at the new iloverapidweaver.com site, a mini-testimonial page for rabid enthusiastic RW fans. 3.6.3 is a free upgrade from 3.6, $25 from prior versions.

  • Embed .Mac Web Gallery thumbnails in RapidWeaver pages

The new .Mac Web Galleries are great, but they unfortunately can only be built by iPhoto '08 and integrated into iWeb pages. Thanks to this RapidWeaver forum post from Günter, however, RW users have a trick for embedding those slick scrolling .Mac Web Gallery thumbnails into their pages. The trick more or less involves creating at least one or more .Mac Web Galleries, opening iWeb and using its new widgets feature to embed one of your galleries in an iWeb page, publishing to a folder and copying the specific piece of .Mac Web Gallery code out of that iWeb page and into a RapidWeaver Blocks page. It isn't exactly pretty, but I think I know of a way to simplify this process, at least for some of you. The way I figure it, if you're already publishing an iWeb page to your .Mac account with your galleries embedded in them, you can just open your iDisk and drill down to Web/Sites, find the page you published with that gallery code and simply grab it from there. No publishing to a folder and creating more junk to manage and delete, since you're already publishing those pages and code somewhere. As far as looking at the code on those pages, you can of course simply open them in a browser and use the View Source command, or you can find a text editor like TUAW favorite TextMate or even the free Taco HTML. For more questions on this you can try in the comments here since I know a good number of TUAW readers are also RapidWeaver lovers, but the original RapidWeaver support thread where I found this tip might be a better place if you want to get more thorough answers faster.

It would seem that today is retro theme day on TUAW, at least for me that is. Jordan saw my last post about the System 6 theme for Wordpress and he let me know about his retro themes for RapidWeaver. You can pick from System 7, System 8 (my first Mac ran 8.6, ahh the memories), or even Be (which isn't an Apple OS, but it was created by an Apple guy, so it counts). Each theme costs $4, though there is a System Bundle that'll get your both System 8 and 7 themes for $7.50.

If you use Rapidweaver to maintain your website (we really like Rapidweaver around here), and you want to make sure it will look nice when viewed on an iPhone, check out Realmac Software's new iPhone theme for Rapidweaver. It was specifically designed for Safari and the iPhone's small display. The iPhone theme will be a part of next month's release of Rapidweaver 3.6.2, but you can grab it today right here. Realmac Software today has released the much-anticipated new version of RapidWeaver, their powerful WYSIWYG software that does a great job of filling the gap between iWeb and Dreamweaver. This new v3.6 ushers in a significant list of new features, such as: Themes Styles - no more digging in HTML and CSS to customize your theme (unless you really want to) 6 completely new themes Snippets - manage chunks of frequently used code instead of copy/pasting or constantly re-typing New Flash Slideshow - completely rewritten and can now pull images from a Flickr feed Improved blog, including tags and inline comment support Easy creation of Lists Detailed Publishing And much, much more Also, due to RapidWeaver's "skyrocketing" popularity, RealMac Software introduced a redesigned website today that includes a full-featured add-ons section where users can browse themes, plug-ins and code snippets, which of course also means 3rd parties nowhave one central RapidWeaver community where the can highlight their products. With everything involved, I can completely understand Realmac Software's decision to make v3.6 a paid upgrade - current users (including MacHeist owners) can purchase a v3.6 license for $25, while a full license costs $49. A demo is of course available, so head over to the shiny new Realmac Software site to see everything RapidWeaver has to offer.

RapidWeaver, arguably the 800 lb. gorilla of the WYSIWYG web design space on the Mac, is being sold for $27.97 on MacZOT - a 30% discount off its retail price of $39.95. The debate around sites like MacZOT aside, I view this simply as a killer sale on a rockin' app.Now I honestly haven't checked in on a MacZOT deal in a while, but it appears RapidWeaver is up on the block only through tonight and tomorrow, so act fast.

Owning in part to my enthusiasm for RapidWeaver we've had several posts recently about the excellent website creation software. Now thanks to Don McAllister over at ScreenCastsOnline yet another excellent RapidWeaver plugin has come to my attention. WebYep from Objective Development is a light-weight Content Management System that allows you to create webpages that are editable by the user (similar to a wiki) by embedding little bits of PHP generated by WebYep. In addition to RapidWeaver, WebYep has plugins for DreamWeaver and Freeway. Be sure to check out the demo site and to watch Don's ScreenCast to get a sense of what it can do.WebYep is €29 (~$38) but a 20% discount code is available from ScreenCastsOnline until Feb 22nd.[Via ScreenCastsOnline]

  • Easier Rapidweaver Theme Editing - RWThemeMiner

    12.22.2006

I've already revealed my fondness for the excellent and easy to use web development software RapidWeaver. One of the things that makes RapidWeaver so powerful is the number of excellent themes available for the software, both those built-in and those by third-parties (some free, some commercial). Now along comes To The Point Software with a new version of their RWThemeMiner theme "editing assistant." This neat little tool provides a nice little GUI front end for getting inside of and modifying RapidWeaver themes (the actual editing of images, etc. must be done in another appropriate application such as Photoshop, etc.). This lets you easily modify themes to meet your own purposes (for instance by adding custom graphics) without having to dig deep in the CSS and resource folders all on your own. Indeed it brings the GUI approach to editing themes in much the way that RapidWeaver itself brings it to editing web pages. Definitely worth a look if you're a RapidWeaver junkie like me.RWThemeMiner is $15 shareware.[Via Macminute]

  • Developers unleash exclusive offers for MacHeist participants

One of the appeals of MacHeist that a few participating developers cited for their participation is residual sales. Things like upgrade licenses, extra plugins and add-ons can all be big boosts to a 3rd party developer's revenue, and some of MacHeist's participating devs have certainly hit the ground running. Yesterday I received my confirmation emails and licenses from RealMac Software (RapidWeaver) and Dave Watanabe (NewsFire), both with exclusive offers for MacHeist customers. First, RealMac Software is offering a 10% discount on theme packs, and Dave is offering a 'lifetime upgrade' add-on for NewsFire for a mere $11. We've also known from early on that John Casasanta has had a version 4.0 upgrade just around the corner for iClip, and MacroMates had an offer on the table since day 1 of at least 60% off an upgrade license to an upcoming version 2 release of TextMate. It will be interesting to see how all this plays out for these 3rd party developers in the coming months. I know I'm already falling in love with TextMate, and even though I use WordPress, ecto and Dreamweaver for most of my website needs, RapidWeaver is tempting me with its sexy ease of use and purty themes. The 3rd party devs, it seems, have already made a revenue statistic out of me.

  • Yourhead + Rapidweaver = WYSIWYG Goodness

After reading Michael's post about the new release of Sandvox, I realized we have never mentioned the excellent Blocks plugin for Rapidweaver from Yourhead Software. Now I have not played extensively with either iWeb or Sandvox, having been inducted into the Rapidweaver fan club even before they came out, but naturally I was very interested in their characteristic feature--WYSIWYG web page editing. The downside of those programs (at least as I perceived it) was that their very ease of use seemed to place more restrictions on what you could do with them as compared to Rapidweaver. Well, Blocks gives you the best of both worlds: Rapidweaver plus WYSIWYG editing similar to iWeb or Sandvox. We have previously mentioned Yourhead's Collage photo gallery plugin, and in addition to Blocks they also have several more excellent plugins, including the just released Carousel (an even better photo gallery) and Accordion (for easily making dynamic javascript page elements). To get a good sense of how powerful Rapidweaver becomes with these plugins be sure to check out the screencasts both from the developer and from Screencastsonline. If you're looking for a relatively easy to use website creation tool and want WYSIWYG page creation, be sure to add Rapidweaver + the Yourhead plugins to your comparison list. Rapidweaver is $39.95 (though it's also part of the soon to wrap up Macheist bundle) and the Yourhead plugins range from $9.95 to $19.95.

Woo, it's about time! It sure seemed like I've been using the public beta of version 3.5 for quite a long time. For the unfamiliar, Rapidweaver is the WYSIWYG web editor by Realmac Software that does, in fact, make things super easy. Create and maintain a blog (complete with podcast), photo and/or movie galleries, contact page and more with ease. No coding is necessary, but you're welcome to it if that's your thing. Changes in version 3.5 include: Universal A slew of new templates (I've complained bout Rapidweaver's base templates before. Some of the new ones are pretty nice). New UI Permalinks in the blog (Finally!) SFTP supports There's more, of course, and you can get the full run-down here. This is a free update for registered users. Rapidweaver requires Mac OS 10.3.9 or later and costs $39.95US for a single license.

RapidWeaver 3.5, the theme based website creator, has just been released by Realmac Software. This release is a Universal Binary, and includes new themes, CSS based photo galleries, 'feature rich blogging,' and SFTP support. This release also includes the ability to directly edit the HTML code, which will be a real boon to people who know HTML but also like nice GUI touches. The price has gone up slightly from $34.95 to $39.95Thanks to all who sent this in.Correction: I incorrectly said that you can edit HTML in RapidWeaver's new code view. Sadly, you can only view the code (and check for validation errors). Thanks to Tom for pointing this out.

  • Publish Flickr images to Rapidweaver with Rapidflickr

I've been using Realmac Software's Rapidweaver to maintain a site for my kids for a while now. While I've enjoyed the experience, there is something that has bothered me: It's kind of a pain to update the site from more than one computer. For instance, I have a couple of iPhoto albums set up as galleries on the site. Now, since I set them up on Computer A, Rapidweaver complains that the albums are missing when I open the site on Computer B. This really annoyed me until I found rapidflickr. As you may have guessed, rapidflickr is a Rapidweaver plug-in that allows you to create galleries from images you have stored on your Flickr account. Simply enter your Flicker user name (you can store more than one for easy access), the tags of the photos you're after, the number of photos you'd like to retrieve at a time and you're off. You can even limit you search to photos uploaded within a certain date range. Add text to your new page and you've eliminated the annoying "photo album not found" error.Rapidflickr requires Mac OS 10.4 or later and Rapidweaver 3.2. A single license will cost you $9.95US.

The term "grudge match" may be a little harsh, but the folks from Realmac Software will be at the Regent Street Apple Store in London on February 8th to give a side-by-side comparison of their application and Apple's. The Realmac folks will also offer a preview of the upcoming version 3.5 of Rapidweaver and have some free stuff to give away, like stickers, demo CDs and discount codes. The event is scheduled for 7:00PM - 8:00PM, so if you're in London and have nothing to do on that Wednesday night, go check it out.
