Ubisoft offers free games to encourage you to stay at home

Ubisoft thinks it has a simple way to encourage people to stay at home and wait out the COVID-19 pandemic: shower them with games. It's running a month-long campaign that will give away free games, trials, discounts and other offers to give you something to do while you're cooped up. It's starting things off by offering the PC version of Rayman Legends for free on Uplay from now through April 3rd. It's an old title, to be sure, but it might hit the spot if you're looking for an upbeat game to remind you that things will get better.

Of the group, there are ten PlayStation 4 games on sale through PSN this week, among which are Awesomenauts Assemble ($5.39), EA Sports UFC ($13.99), Mercenary Kings ($8.99), Rayman Legends ($19.59), Surgeon Simulator: A&E Anniversary Edition ($6.39), TowerFall Ascension ($7.34) and Trine 2: Complete Story ($7.99). Other notable deals include Borderlands 2 (PS3, $4.54), Dark Souls 2 (PS3, $19.59), Rayman Origins ($13.29 on Vita, $9.79 on PS3) and Far Cry 3 (PS3, $9.79). [Image: Ubisoft]

While Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and its Amiibo army are currently dominating store shelves, Ubisoft's Rayman Legends was once slated to be the first Wii U game to offer figure-powered nearfield communication (NFC) features, Unseen 64 reports. The concept trailer above, intended for internal use within Ubisoft, shows players summoning new elements into levels by placing figures (including a Rabbid toy) on the Wii U gamepad. The footage features a prototype Wii U controller that hadn't finalized its NFC technology, so figures are placed on the gamepad's screen, rather than on the NFC badge present in the final version. Ubisoft eventually scrapped its plans for NFC support, and Rayman Legends figures never made it to retail. Unseen 64 additionally shows off concept art for levels that didn't make the cut for the final version of Rayman Legends, including a recently unearthed "Dracula's Castle" world. A concept video showcasing these levels is available here. [Video: Ubisoft / Liam Robertson]

The PlayStation Store updates later today, adding download versions of retail games Earth Defense Force 2025 and Rayman Legends PS4. On the download-only side it's a busy week, with three new releases and three restored classics to sink time into. Leading the new releases is a game with plenty of retro about it: We gave Capcom's Strider resurrection four stars in our review, lauding the PS4 and PS3 game's "absorbing fusion of action and platforming." If sci-fi ninjas aren't your bag, the PS3's Forest Legends: The Call of Love offers some lighter puzzling, and Vita indie Gunslugs brings dynamically generated run-and-gunning to the mix. As for the classics, you can choose from fan favorite PSOne platformer Tomba! 2, the PSOne version of Mr Driller, and the divisive PS2 outing of Neo Contra. If you've come this far and you're still shrugging your shoulders, head back to the top for the first ever PS Plus TV spot. [Image: Capcom]

This is the final week of the Winter Olympics, with the closing ceremonies scheduled for Sunday night. Bob Costas is back (with less creepy demon-possessed eye infection stare) plus plenty of action including bobsled, short-track speed skating, hockey finals and of course, curling. Game of Thrones season three will hit the shelves on Blu-ray, so whether you're looking for a recap or just getting your first look in 1080p, now is the time. Racing fans can also look forward to the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, while gamers can enjoy a remake of the classic game Strider on current and next-gen systems this week -- although honestly, many of us are just trying to finish off House of Cards before the spoilers become impossible to avoid or filter out. Usually we don't point out the late-night weekly shows, but tonight Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show chair from Jay Leno. Check after the break for trailers plus our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and gaming.

  • Vita can't stand in for Wii U GamePad in PS4 Rayman Legends

The PlayStation Vita will not work with the PS4 the same way that the Wii U works with its GamePad for the next-gen version of Rayman Legends, Ubisoft has confirmed. On Nintendo's system, one player can control the helper character Murfy using the GamePad, while another player controls Rayman or one of his friends on the TV. Use of the Vita, however GamePad-like it may be, will be limited to Remote Play. Senior Game Designer Emile Morel broke the news when he answered a fan's question on the PlayStation Blog, saying, "you cannot control Murfy in touch mode on the PS Vita, because even in Remote Play mode you will continue to play the same version of the game when you use the PS4 joystick." Ubisoft will also not be offering a discount for those upgrading from the PS3 version, and the online challenge rankings for the PS3 and PS4 will be separate. Rayman Legends comes to North American PS4 and Xbox One systems tomorrow, and EU region consoles on February 21. [Image: Ubisoft]

Ubisoft Montpellier's manic side-scrolling platformer Rayman Legends is on its way to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 next year. So says ... Snoop Dogg?! Hi, Snoop! Didn't expect to see you there. Originally announced as a Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends is now more multiplatform than it's ever been, following up on this year's PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita, PC and Wii U release with upcoming launches for next-gen hardware. The new ports feature upgraded graphics, reduced load times, and a selection of exclusive costumes on each platform. Xbox One players can access new costumes inspired by Ubisoft's Splinter Cell series and Far Cry 3's Vaas, while PS4 owners can look forward to a unique Assassin's Creed-themed outfit for Rayman. It took nearly three months, but Ubisoft patched in the Rayman Legends update that brings the missing Invasion levels to the Vita version today. Golf claps aside, as well as adding the harder Invasion levels that were available on other platforms at launch, it also turns on the handheld version's leaderboards. On its own merits, Ubisoft's vibrant platformer is a fantastic follow-up to Rayman Origins, as detailed in our glowing four-and-a-half-stars review. If you haven't tried it out on the assortment of platforms it's already out on, you may want to wait for the Xbox One and PS4 versions, which are due in February.

Ubisoft has announced Rayman Legends on PS Vita will receive an update on November 26 that adds the Invasion levels, which are more difficult remixes of established levels that were missing from the launch of the PS Vita port. Leaderboards will also be turned on with this update. In our review, we recommended Rayman Legends to anyone who even remotely enjoys platformers because "the game will make you smile no matter what system you call home." Rayman Legends, the follow-up to Rayman Origins, was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and launched on September 3 for Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita and PC. Rayman Legends is also coming to Xbox One and PS4 in February.

During today's first half of fiscal 2014 earnings call, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot noted that Rayman Legends will launch on Xbox One and PS4 in February 2014. It was revealed during the call that the game has sold "right around one million units" across all of the platforms it is available on, that being PC, Vita, Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U. The game's sales contributed to a gross profit of €202.2 million ($271.5 million) for the half-year. The news follows Ubisoft's adjusted forecasts for sales following its decision to delay The Crew to Q2 of fiscal 2015 and Watch Dogs to spring 2014, after which the publisher's shares dropped 25 percent. Rayman Legends and Splinter Cell: Blacklist were listed as two games that underperformed in their initial sales by Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez following the aforementioned delays, and today's earnings call noted that Splinter Cell: Blacklist has sold "close to two million units."

A number of Ubisoft's games from this fiscal year are selling less than the publisher targeted, including Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman: Legends. Those were the games name-checked by CFO Alain Martinez when pressed on the company's adjusted forecasts in the wake of delays to Watch Dogs and The Crew. "We have had games that were released for which we anticipate today lower sales than we anticipated when we gave our first targets," Martinez said during an investors' conference call. When asked to clarify which games he was talking about, he added, "Already released games such as, of course, Splinter Cell, Rayman, and others." Ubisoft adjusted its averaged revenue forecasts for this fiscal year by €415 million, around $561 million, and expects to make an operating loss rather than a profit. The publisher stated this was principally due to the surprise delays to Watch Dogs and The Crew. Ubisoft delayed the once Wii U-exclusive Rayman Legends to bring it to other platforms and gain more sales. Meanwhile, Splinter Cell: Blacklist placed fourth in August's NPD charts, selling less than Madden 25, Saints Row 4, and Disney Infinity.

  • Ubisoft 'not ruling out' Rayman Legends for 3DS

Just because Rayman Legends has already launched on most modern platforms doesn't mean you should rule out its eventual jump to the 3DS, Ubisoft executive Alain Corre told CVG last week. "When you look at Rayman Legends you see it's a very big game with a lot of levels," Corre said. "It takes time to squeeze everything and downsize it into other formats." Corre's statements toward a 3DS version were more of a musing than a confirmation, however, as he added that Ubisoft can't "say anything for the moment, but we can't rule the format out." The 3DS version of Rayman Origins launched six months after the game's initial launch on the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Considering Legends just launched weeks ago, Ubisoft has plenty of time to follow suit with its hypothetical port to the 3DS.

  • Rayman Legends on Vita getting missing Invasion levels via patch

Ubisoft will patch in missing levels of Rayman Legends on Vita for free, Communications Manager Gary Steinman writes in the comments of the Ubisoft blog. The Vita version is missing Invasion Mode, 28 stages that turn levels into timed challenges. Players noticed the missing content yesterday, when the game launched on Vita and PS3. "Due to a longer development time than expected, we couldn't initially include the Invasion Mode – essentially, a second take on existing Rayman Legends maps – in the Vita version of the game," Steinman says. "However, we can confirm that the Invasion Mode will be added via a free patch, at a later date." Rayman Legends Vita players, set your stopwatches to "a later date" now.

The PlayStation Vita incarnation of the newly released Rayman Legends is missing a chunk of content, players have reported: Specifically, it doesn't have 28 levels found in other versions of the platforming adventure. NeoGAF users first spotted this discrepancy and have provided solid evidence for their claims. In screenshots taken from the Vita game and its Xbox 360 counterpart, it's clear that the latter game features more "lums" for players to collect. 700, in fact. The Vita game has 615. The missing 85 lums would normally be found in the 28 Invasion levels that should be present in the Vita game. These 28 Invasion levels ask players to complete a given stage in as little time as possible, and are seen as some of the most challenging content found in Rayman Legends. We've reached out to Ubisoft regarding the missing Vita content.

  • Saints Row 4 marches on in UK charts, A Realm Reborn berths in third

Saints Row 4 maintains its reign in the UK plains for another week, seeing off a number of new releases including Square Enix phoenix (down) A Realm Reborn. The resurrection of MMO Final Fantasy 14 debuts in third, just behind Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Outside the top ten, Massive Shock: a Grasshopper game is struggling to sell! Games by the Japanese studio are rarely big sellers - Lollipop Chainsaw did ship 700,000 - but there'll surely be disappointment at Killer is Dead charting 28th in its first week. Maybe not as much as there'll be over at Capcom, though: Lost Planet 3 lands two places higher in 26. Murkier to judge is Rayman Legends in sixth. Topping the first week sales of predecessor Origins by 20 percent is all well and good, but Origins wasn't exactly a commercial hit. It only sold 50,000 copies across its first month in the US, after all. Still, Legends is the second highest new release this week, pipping Madden 25 which touches down in seventh.

Ubisoft announced that its infectiously friendly platformer Rayman Legends will miss its intended August launch date for the PlayStation Vita in Europe. The PS Vita version of Rayman Legends will now launch in the UK on September 13, 2013. Retail releases for the Nintendo Wii U, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows are still scheduled to hit Europe on August 30. An Ubisoft representative confirmed with Joystiq that the North American Vita version of Rayman Legends "will be released as planned" on September 3.
