VC Friday: Remember the N64?
You do? Great! And do you also recall how N64 games would occasionally pop up on the Virtual Console? No?Well, we can't blame you if it slipped your mind. It's been almost three months since PAL gamers last saw an N64 game on the VC (for the record, it was Yoshi's Story), but this week sees the fuzz-tacular console make a return. And, despite our snarky tone, 1080° Snowboarding is actually an ace reminder of the console. This blogger still has fresh memories of shaving milliseconds from his best Time Trial performances with Dion Blaster. Never did pull off a 1080°, mind.Streets of Rage imitator Riot Zone makes the leap from the Turbografx-16 to complete this week's PAL platter of retro goodness. 1080° Snowboarding -- N64 -- 1000 Wii points Riot Zone -- Turbografx -- 800 Wii points
Pac Attack and Riot Zone slump onto Virtual Console
If you saw our new release list this week, then you know that a torrent of mediocrity is forcing us to do things we don't want to do. First it was an American Idol take-off, which every media outlet from Semi Fan Bi-Monthly to Bi Fan Semi-Monthly has done before us. Now ... the hordes have forced us to post the above, semi-Pac-Man-related video just so this post has some entertainment value, and we couldn't be more sorry.Pac-Attack (Super NES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Though Pac-Man itself is a classic, we can't understand games that think the character identity of a soulless, yellow pizza is strong enough so that it can be transported to other games. In this case, it's a puzzler, both literally and figuratively.Riot Zone (TurboGrafx16 CD-ROM, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): From the intro of this side-scrolling beat 'em up: "The Bossman's still in the DragonZone! Whear's that warrant you promised?!" We assume your purchasing decision is now clear.
The Bossman's still in the DragonZone; the Virtual Console is headed to the Riot Zone
Despite the game apparently being quite mediocre, we can't help but be excited about the arrival of Hudson's Riot Zone on the Virtual Console this Monday. To be honest, we haven't gotten over the gee-whiz factor of being able to download Turbografx-16 CD-ROM games. Also, we love brawlers. Well, I love brawlers. Dave may have something else to say after playing it.The game is basically a whole-cloth Final Fight clone, which we're secretly okay with. It's not our copyright. Capcom seems to be doing okay with their whole fighting-game thing, even after being ripped off. Riot Zone at least one-ups Final Fight in awesomely Engrish intro cinemas!
