Apple has scored a coup by landing Alfonso Cuarón, who won directing Oscars for Gravity and Roma, to a multi-year deal with its upcoming streaming service, Apple TV+. Cuarón will develop television projects exclusively for the service, marking one of the few times he's ventured out of the film production world, according to Variety.

Hollywood's biggest prize will still be open to streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted on Tuesday night to not change rules on Oscar eligibility. Any feature-length film on a streaming platform can be eligible for an Academy Award, as long as it also screens in a theater in Los Angeles for at least seven days.

In 22 years, Netflix has gone from a DVD rental service to the future of entertainment, turning the existing industry on its head. At last night's Academy Awards, the company has, once and for all, upended the way the movie business works. It won three trophies for Alfonso Cuarón's Roma, including Best Foreign Film, Best Cinematography and, crucially, Best Director.

Netflix had its best year ever at the UK's Oscars last night. The streaming service's hot favourite Roma took home four BAFTAs, out of seven nominations, including Best Picture. Netflix's only other candidate, the Coen Brothers' western The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, lost out to British comedy The Favourite in the costume design category. Until yesterday, the platform had only scooped a single film BAFTA back in 2016 when Ava DuVernay's 13th won Best Documentary.

It won't surprise you to hear that Netflix is particularly eager for awards this year, and it looks like that thirst might pay off at the Oscars. Alfonso Cuarón's Roma is clearly a front runner after receiving no less than ten nominations, including Best Picture, Leading Actress (Yaliza Aparicio), Directing, Foreign Language Film, Supporting Actress (Marina de Tavira), Cinematography, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. It'll be surprising if the movie doesn't pick up at least one of the iconic statuettes.

As the dust settles on the Golden Globes, streaming services are already gearing up for their best showing ever at the BAFTAs -- aka the UK's Oscars. Netflix is up for eight awards (up from three last year), mainly thanks to Alfonso Cuarón's deeply personal Mexican drama, Roma, which already snagged the Best Foreign Language Film gong at the Globes and is nominated in the BAFTA Best Film category.

You might already be preparing to spend the holidays watching Avengers: Infinity War on repeat after it arrives on Netflix on Christmas Day, but there will be plenty of other new shows and movies for you to check out on the streaming service over the last month of the year. Among the big original movies are a version of The Jungle Book called Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (December 7th) and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón's Oscar contender Roma (December 14th). Another awards hopeful, Susanne Bier's Bird Box, will be available December 21st, and a Jennifer Aniston vehicle, Dumplin', debuts December 7th.

Netflix movies don't always get shown on the big screen, but whenever they do, they also debut on the streaming service at the same time. That won't be the case for three of its upcoming films, though, and it might all be due to the company's desire to finally win a certain golden statuette. Netflix will debut Alfonso Cuarón's black-and-white Mexican drama ROMA, the Coen Brothers' Western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and Susanne Bier's thriller flick Bird Box (starring Sandra Bullock) in theaters ahead of their online release.

We finally have our first look at Alfonso Cuarón's first Netflix feature and his first film after Gravity back in 2014. The streaming platform has released a trailer for the black-and-white flick ROMA, which was inspired by Cuarón's childhood (specifically the women who shaped it) back in the '70s. ROMA tells the story of a young Mixteco domestic worker who faces a devastating news while caring for the children of a middle class family, as well as the mother of the children who's dealing with her husband's extended absence.

  • Omate adds two new circular smartwatches to its affordable collection

Omate's well known for bringing stylish smartwatches to the mass market, as we've seen with last year's $129 X (pictured left) and $169 Lutetia (second from left). To kick off 2015, the company is leveraging the same MediaTek Aster chipset (MT2502) plus the Lutetia's near-circular, always-on color transflective touchscreen to bring out two new designs: the Panerai-inspired Roma (second from right), and the Racer which is the "sport-oriented alter ego" of its round siblings. As before, the two new models will function mainly as notification watches with basic activity tracking plus customizable watch face, so they should offer the same week-long battery life. For those who want to give the rugged Racer a spin (we have a 360-degree view of it after the break), Omate's website will be taking pre-orders for just $99 per unit between January 5th and 15th, and after that it'll be bumped up to $129 until January 31st, with shipments expected in as early as end of February. There's no info regarding the metallic Roma just yet, but Omate's new partnership with the Richline Group will be offering these watches in US and UK retailers -- including jewelry stores -- this March.
