When it's time to start building their new, premium smartphones, companies like Samsung are usually driven by a simple mantra: "more." More power, more features, more cameras. And it's to the point where — after a while — it all starts to seem like overkill. Sure, all of these high-end devices are drool-worthy, but honestly, who needs that much smartphone? Maybe you do, since you're reading a review on Engadget. And so do I, as you might expect from a professional phone snob. The thing to remember is that, broadly speaking, we're the outliers here. Most people want a powerful, capable phone that doesn't cost $1,000 and won't feel obsolete in a year. That's where Samsung's smaller, $750 Galaxy S10e comes in. If phones like the S10+ represent the company at the peak of its hardware and software game, the S10e reflects an understanding that these new developments really shine when more people get to use them. The end result: A smartphone that, while not as flashy as its siblings, packs nearly all of the modern conveniences that make those pricier devices such a pleasure to use.

If you like the Galaxy S10 but find the two standard models to be overkill, you're in luck. Samsung has unveiled its rumored Galaxy S10e, delivering most of the regular S10's features in a more affordable package. You'll have a smaller 5.8-inch display, 'just' two rear cameras (more on those in a bit) and a more conventional fingerprint reader, but it's otherwise as fast and eye-catching as its brawnier counterparts. Effectively, it's an iPhone XR for Samsung fans.

We're mere days away from Samsung's next Unpacked event, so the Korean conglomerate is all but ready to dish the details on the Galaxy S10 smartphone family. Not that we're totally in the dark, of course. As is the case in the lead-up to all flagship smartphone launches, the rumor mill has been picking up pace over the past weeks and months, giving us more than a few hints on what to expect on February 20th. Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 phones are set to support next-generation WiFi amid a broader expansion of WiFi 6 (802.11ax) availability this year. Three versions of the phone, including an S10+ and cheaper S10E, should be compatible with the standard, according to FCC filings Droid Life unearthed.
Lenovo S10 and S10e fan noise gets user fix, involves minor surgery
It's admittedly been a while since we heard about some Lenovo S10 users' issues with heat dissipation and increasingly aggressive fan noise. Two years on, and one frustrated owner has taken it upon themselves to get inside the netbook and solve the issue. The result? The removal of a metallic-looking dust filter from within the left side vent, which is apparently enough to pacify the fan on this particular machine. We'd temper this solution with a warning: that cover was there for a reason, presumably a dust-related one.
