Samsung's second Unpacked event of the year takes place today, and the company hasn't exactly been subtle about what it has in store. It already opened pre-order registrations for an as-yet-unnamed device (almost certainly the Galaxy Note 10). Leaks have pointed towards a 5G version of the next Note and revealed other possible specs for the Note 10. The Korean giant might have more up its sleeve beyond Note 10 news too.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. the competition: Big and getting bigger

Phone screens continue to get larger, with many flagship phones regularly breaking the 6-inch mark. Still, the Note 9's slightly larger display and bigger battery might provide the edge it needs to succeed, in addition to its ever-trusty S Pen. To see how the Note 9's specs stack up against some of its leading competition (like its sibling, the Galaxy S9+), we've assembled the relevant details in the table below. Of course, while specs are interesting, they're ultimately not the final word on the phone's real-world performance. For that verdict you'll have to wait for our full review in the coming weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. last year's Note 8: What's changed?

    by

    08.09.2018

Last year's Galaxy Note 8 largely succeeded at redeeming the Note line in the wake of its predecessor's battery troubles. The new Note 9 doesn't have as much pressure on it this time around, so the changes are a lot less dramatic than the addition of a dual camera and virtual assistant. Still, there are a few things worth noting here: The cameras have gotten a bit of a bump to sit comfortably alongside those on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ while the Note 9's 6.4-inch screen size is also a nice advantage. To get the full details on all the small but key changes to Samsung's newest S Pen-equipped handset, check out our spec chart below, and stay tuned in the coming weeks for our full review.

Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Note 9 in Brooklyn on August 9th

It wouldn't be summer without a big Samsung announcement, and now we know when it's going down The company just sent out invitations out for an Unpacked event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 9th (as expected) and even by Samsung standards, that's a pretty massive venue. Then again, Samsung has some pretty dramatic tendencies when it comes to putting on launch events -- after all, this is the company that turned a phone launch into a sort of faux-musical. If the invitation is any indication, though, the new Galaxy Note 9 will be the star of the show.

Samsung is primed to unveil its latest flagship, the Galaxy S9. How will the Galaxy series fare against the latest trio of iPhones? Can it best the talking-poop emoji?

The Galaxy Note 8 vs. the competition: More than just a stylus

With phone screens getting bigger and bigger, the Galaxy Note doesn't quite stand out the way it used to. The Note 8's 6.3-inch screen is only a tad larger than the 6.2 inches boasted by the Galaxy S8+, and both devices share the same Snapdragon 835 processor. Still, the Note 8 has a few things to set itself apart, including a new dual camera setup like the one on the soon-to-replaced iPhone 7 Plus. Check out the table below to see what Samsung's latest large-screen handset is packing under the hood versus other notable flagships, and check back for our full review of the Galaxy Note 8 in a few weeks.

Samsung's next large-screened phone is on its way, as invites have just gone out for the company's Unpacked event on August 23rd. A teaser image promises to "Do bigger things," which is about what we'd expect from the followup to last year's Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Rumors indicate that the Galaxy Note 8 we're expecting to see will rock a larger 6.3-inch version of the Galaxy S8's Infinity Display, dual rear cameras and 6GB of RAM.

  • Samsung's Galaxy S6 Edge+ can have apps pinned to its curve

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is finally official, and with that comes tailor-made features for its curved design. One of those is Apps Edge, which lets users create up to five shortcuts for frequently used apps, offering quick access to them directly from the edge of the screen. It's worth noting that a Samsung patent for Apps Edge was spotted last month; a similar feature was also found on the Galaxy Note Edge, though the same can't be said for the newer Galaxy S6 Edge. At the moment, this appears to only be for the S6 Edge+, but we reached out to Samsung to find out if S6 Edge owners can expect to get it as well.

Samsung is gearing up to show us... well, we don't know exactly what yet. However, if rumors and leaks hold true, there could be announcements for at least two new smartphones: the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. If anything, Samsung's invite to today's Unpacked event hints at something big and curvy, which could apply to both of the aforementioned devices. Perhaps there will be a wearable too, what with the company recently confirming the existence of a Gear smartwatch that features a rotating bezel. Whatever it may be, you can watch the keynote as it happens in the video below -- but don't forget we're also liveblogging it from New York City. The action starts at 11AM ET.

  • Samsung teases a Galaxy Note 4 reveal for September 3rd

It's that time of year again: smartphone-reveal-event season, and Samsung is holding one next month, in three cities, simultaneously. A recent invite sent to the press, embedded after the break, asked us to "note the date" of September 3rd on our calendars for a product unveiling in New York. It's the latest in the Korean outfit's series of Unpacked events, and it's happening just a few days before Apple's supposed product reveal. Given the cheeky wording of the email, we'd suspect it's pertaining to the Galaxy Note 4 (it's almost assuredly about the Note 4). Whatever it may or may not end up being, though, you can rest assured that we'll be there covering it live just for you.

  • Samsung Galaxy S5 preview: simpler in some ways, more 'glam' in others

Once a year, Samsung takes some of its best material and slaps it together into a premium flagship model called the Galaxy S. While 2014's version -- the S5 -- came a bit earlier in the year than some earlier iterations, we're no less excited to see it become the star of the show at Mobile World Congress. The new device will ship in April (on stage, Samsung specifically mentioned that it launches on April 11th in 150 markets), although exact pricing and availability are still unknown. It features a refreshed design language, yet anyone who has used a GS phone recently will immediately recognize it as a Samsung flagship. Despite its familiar design, the GS5 has a few new useful hardware features, including a fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor, and a toned-down TouchWiz UI on top of Android 4.4 KitKat. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all, however, was that Samsung didn't overload its prized new smartphone with a heaping dose of new S-branded features. This is a marked departure from the company's previous strategy of cramming in every software feature under the sun, which leads us to wonder if this is related to Samsung's recent agreement to dial back the customization it does on Android devices. So what else is new here? Read on for a deeper dive.

Today at its IFA 2012 press conference, Samsung confirmed that the newly announced Galaxy Note II will make use of a new, redesigned S Pen. In addition to boasting an improved 8mm grip, it has a rubber tip. It also recognizes 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is already true of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. Other than that, Samsung hasn't shared much in the way of specifics, but if you'd like to see video of the new Note in action, we can at least offer that.

Whenever we take a group photo, it's always a pain to have to go and email a copy to everyone afterwards. Good thing Samsung's rolled out a new buddy photo share feature on its new Galaxy S III to save us those precious post-photo seconds. It works using facial recognition tech to identify each of your subjects, then shoots the picture to them automatically via email or text message. Fantastic, now our mother won't be pestering us for weeks to get copies of all those family reunion photos next year.

  • Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III

    05.03.2012

In addition to announcing its newest flagship, the Galaxy S III, along with some nifty photo-sharing features, Samsung has just revealed two more human-friendly features that aim to further differentiate the phone on the software side. These include SmartStay, which cleverly keeps the display from timing out by using the front-facing camera to detect when you're looking at the screen. Meanwhile, S Voice ushers in voice commands, and is the closest thing we've seen to a Siri competitor since Apple introduced that feature on the iPhone 4S. And we have to say, though Android users have long been reveling in voice-activated dialing and Google searches, the list of possible use cases here is quite impressive. In addition to initiating calls, you can wake the phone, request songs, send emails and text messages, use the calendar app, adjust the volume, capture photos, snooze the alarm and inquire about the weather. For now, Samsung says this feature will support eight languages, including, among others, Spanish, German, Korean and American / British English. Still, we wouldn't put it past Samsung to teach the GS III a few more languages once it gets that whole "launching in 145 countries" thing out of the way.

  • Samsung Galaxy S III to get separate launch event 'in the first half of 2012'

Some phones are just too big for Mobile World Congress. That's Samsung's thinking, given the triumphant launch of its Galaxy S II -- in all its guises. While specifications for Sammy's next flagship are spinning rumor windmills across the web, there's nothing particularly concrete on what we'll be seeing just yet. However, in an official statement received by Techradar, the manufacturer revealed that the phone will be treated to its very own launch -- something it's also plotting for its new Google TV sets. In its own words: "Samsung is looking forward to introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012. The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product." At least it sounds like there will still plenty to test out later this month -- and probably a whole new raft of confusing naming conventions.
