  • Here are all of Valve's Steam Machines from CES 2014, in specs

    Remember those Steam Machine partners we heard about? Gabe Newell just took the stage at Valve's CES 2014 event and made them official, doling out specs for gaming rigs from Alienware, CyberPower, Gigabyte, iBuyPower, Falcon Northwest, and more. There are thirteen machines in all, varying from $500 to $6000 a piece. Not all of them revealed their full hardware specifications, but skip past the break, and we'll give you a rundown of what we know.

    Valve's Steam Machines initiative is supported by a first-party box that 300 beta users have right now, but 2014 is all about third-party Steam Machines taking that reference box and running with it. Thus far, the only third parties we know of that're making Steam Machines are iBuyPower and Digital Storm -- today, that all changes. Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers are among the first companies signed on to support Valve's initiative, Engadget learned this afternoon. The entire lineup will be on display this week at CES 2014, and we'll have many more details in the coming days. Beyond the dozen companies above, it's totally possible that there are other third parties signed on for Steam Machines -- we'll have to wait and see when Valve unveils everything at its press conference tomorrow afternoon. Update: As seen in the image above, live from Valve's CES 2014 presser, those third-party manufacturers are double confirmed. Maingear is the final addition that makes 14 in total.

    So maybe its "scanning at the speed of light" claims are a bit overstated, but BlinkScan's capabilities are still pretty impressive. The peripheral scans, crops and straightens images in the speed its name implies, pulling out individual files when you can several images at once. After the break, you'll see a YouTube video wherein the BlinkScan does its thing with 47 coins at the same time, giving each its own individual file without ever having to open photo editing software.   • App featured on Shark Tank reaches App Store's top spot

    ABC's entrepreneur investor reality show Shark Tank is currently the number one TV show in its Friday time slot, drawing 6.4 million viewers total and 1.7 million in the ever-important 18-49 demographic. A panel of millionaires and billionaires listen to pitches from entrepreneurs looking for investors in their companies. Some people walk away with millions of dollars in investments, others with nothing. But how does an appearance on the show impact your company when you don't win over the investors? For one app developer, the answer is swimmingly. Garret Gee's startup Scan appeared this past Friday, October 12, on the show seeking US$1 million for his QR-code scanning mobile app. While his pitch was denied by the investors, viewers were sold, and his app has jumped wildly in the charts since the show aired. On Thursday, Scan, which sells for $1.99, was 150 out of all paid apps in the App Store and number five out of the utilities apps. After the appearance on Shark Tank, the app hit number one on the paid utilities apps and 25 out of all paid apps. On Friday, Gee wrote to AllThingsD to explain his motives for going on the show. "We were open to a deal, but exposure was definitely a top priority/perk." While the investors on the show weren't impressed, the company has been noticed by some powerful players in the tech world. Recently Entree Capital, Google Ventures and Menlo Ventures valued Scan at $21 million, and the company has raised over $7 million dollars to date. Even without the investors' money, it seems like the Shark Tank appearance was a wise investment of Gee's time.

  • Neat revises mobile scanning app, adds expense reporting

    Pushing towards a paperless future, the neat folks at Neat have released version 2.0 of Neat for iOS. The new build of the scanning-on-the-go application features much faster performance, scan annotation, new sharing and collaboration options, plus a new expense-reporting tool. Neat has made its bones as a desktop scanning solution, offering both compact and ADF-enabled scanners that work with the company's Mac and PC applications for document management. The Neat mobile app extends that find-my-files experience for access on the go, with scans and folders synchronizing to the NeatCloud online service. You can quickly share folders or individual scans to collaborate with colleagues, or search the OCR / indexed text of your documents to find what you need quickly. The expense report feature is intriguing; it creates a summary PDF from a collection or folder of receipt scans, totaling up the expenditure and listing categories as it goes. It's not going to supplant dedicated expense-reporting iOS tools like Concur, but for mobile freelancers who want a quick way to send expense overviews while simultaneously filing the receipts for safekeeping, it may get some traction. The NeatCloud platform also includes an optional human-powered verification step called NeatVerify, which will run the automatic OCR results from your receipt or business card scans (no documents) past the eyes of a real, live person for checking. You can get 30 credits for this service for US$4.99 a month, so it's probably best to save it for key items. Speaking of credits, while the Neat application is a free download from the App Store, the required NeatCloud service works on a paid subscription basis. After a 30-day free trial, you will need either the $14.99 or $29.99 monthly NeatCloud plan (discounted if you sign up for a year) to use the app; both plans offer additional features like extra users, cross-service search and more. Compare and contrast the $45 annual cost of an Evernote premium subscription, and you get the sense that Neat is aiming at the more demanding side of the market.

Check out Basil's gold making podcast, Call To Auction, and email Basil with your questions, comments, or hate mail! Have you ever scanned the Auction House with TradeSkillMaster (the best auction management addon, well worth the trouble of learning) and not gotten a complete scan? Maybe you see an error message and your crafting window starts displaying unknown materials prices, even though you can see the prices right front of you when you search? This is a bug that affects anyone on a realm with a lot of auctions (more than 42554, according to the TSM error message). In essence, the GetAll scan that's used to grab a dump of the AH in a few seconds can be incomplete if there are a lot of auctions. As far as I know, the traditional scans are immune to this, but they take a lot more time; like 20 minutes instead of 20 seconds. Even if the scans work perfectly on your realm, scanning is still an extra step that you have to do every time you want to update the prices before you queue up your crafting list. Luckily, there's a way you can get up to date price information without ever having to scan the AH again.

  • Scan's official TARDIS PC Case lets you roam time and space, hatstand optional

    Its target audience may be cranky men who wish the show hadn't been brutally murdered back in '89, but this TARDIS case should impress even the most casual of Doctor Who fan. British desktop company Scan has teamed up with the BBC to produce this faithful PC case, complete with broken chameleon circuit. The base model comes with a 3.1GHz Pentium G2120, but you can swap that out for anything up to a 3.1GHz Core i7 if you need more power, after all, you won't be able to jettison Romana's room to crank a few more frames out of Crysis. Prices start from £936 ($1,508) and run all the way to £1,933 ($3,114) for the fully tricked-out version. At the moment, Scan only ship its products within the EU, but we can't imagine it'll be long before rioting fans in the States demand to get their hands on the gear, or, just start building their own.

    You might not think about them much. When you do, it might be to decry the invasion of robot vomit onto every ad, billboard and poster. Still, the humble two-dimensional QR Code -- originally developed by a Toyota subsidiary to assist in automotive manufacturing -- has become ubiquitous. QR Codes can deliver almost any kind of digital data, as long as it fits within the code's capacity; the densest versions of the barcodes can hold more than 4,000 ASCII characters, but most of the codes you see in public are much less info-packed. They're ideal for short URLs, vCard contact info, SMS or phone call "triggers" for mobile phones, and plenty of other cool tricks. I've used them on name badges for customized scoring forms and on stickers in out-of-the-way corners as scavenger hunt targets. Unfortunately, some marketers seem to think that putting the codes on highway billboards (where you can't really pull out your phone to scan them as you're driving by at 55 MPH) or on subway platforms (the underground thing, not so much with the 3G data) is helpful and clever -- it's not. You need to put them where people have the luxury of time and the benefit of bandwidth; otherwise they're just clutter. Although iOS devices don't natively handle QR Codes yet, there are plenty of third-party apps to enable code scanning. Over at our sibling site TechCrunch, Brenden Mulligan suggests that the best way to help QR Codes make the final leap from curiosity to mainstream tech would be to have the built-in Camera apps on iPhone and Android optionally set to "always looking for QR Code" mode while running. If there's a code in the field of view, says Mulligan, the app should prompt you to process the code. I can think of a couple of ways this would be annoying (what if you're actually trying to take a picture of an advertisement, versus scanning the code?) and potentially harmful (QR Codes can point to malware sites, so automatically decoding them isn't always the best plan). Still, integrating QR scanning capability into the built-in apps is a natural next step if handled gracefully. On the Mac, however, you don't often think of scanning barcodes unless you're cataloging your book collection. Suppose you're testing a new code or looking at one in a PDF or on a website; wouldn't it be nice to confirm where it's going and what it's doing? Enter the $2.99 QR Right, available in the Mac App Store. QR Right, from Ripe Apps, behaves like a camera pointed at your screen, except without the camera. When you run QR Right, you click the dock icon or the menubar icon to "scan" your Mac screen. Any detectable QR Codes or 1D barcodes are highlighted, with the decoded data right below them. If it's a URL, one more click will open that page in your default browser. QR Right is fast and accurate, and if you need the feature, $2.99 is a bargain. At the moment, the app is suffering from a cosmetic bug on the Retina MBP where it renders codes at 4x the correct size; that's not uncommon for apps that have to deal with the screen bitmap, and the disconnect between display elements and raw pixels is causing some issues for screenshot tools as well. [Side tip: if you're a Retina MBP user, the indispensable €14 utility SwitchRes X should be on your shopping list. Not only does it give you granular control over all the Retina-friendly HiDPI screen configurations, it lets you force your screen into non-Retina versions of the standard resolutions when needed. Apps such as QR Right that are skittish with Retina behave just like they should when you dodge back to a straight 1440x900.] The more "normal" side of the QR Code process would be the part where you hold a code up to a camera (or a camera up to a code) to read/act upon the content. That's where the free QRreader app comes into play. This free utility uses your Mac's iSight/FaceTime HD camera to scan printed codes; it promptly opens them in your default browser. Unfortunately, since QRreader is built with Adobe's AIR framework, it's susceptible to outside factors that might break functionality; in this case, the latest version of AIR (3.3) doesn't allow QRreader to work properly. If you're still running v3 of AIR, though, it does the trick. For making your own codes on the fly, there are plenty of free and premium online tools; if you'd like to integrate QR Codes into your database projects, however, I recommend the CNSBarcode plugin for FileMaker Pro. This $85 plugin enables instant creation of QR Codes (plus scores of others), and also enables barcode scanning within FileMaker. Codes can be calculated from any data fields, making it simple to programmatically generate codes for URLs, contacts and more. CNS Barcode also makes a $9.99 iOS app that can scan and create QR Codes and other codes, even allowing third-party apps to send URI requests for code creation.

    If you regularly snap pages of hardcopy text on your smartphone for perusing later, then an Android app being developed by Fujifilm may just tick your literary boxes. Called GT-Layout, it automatically carves up a photo containing text so that each character becomes a separate image. These sub-images can then be reformatted with line breaks to fit your screen area and preferred level of zoom -- so you don't have to pinch and pan so much and there's no need for OCR. Want to try it? Then you'll have to wait. GT-Layout is reportedly coming in an update to Fujifilm's Dropbox client, GT-Document Lite, but there's no sign of it appearing there just yet.

    Two of the world's most hallowed libraries are about to get even quieter, having been given $3 million to go with the flow and put some of their oldest collections online. The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library will together offer up 1.5 million pages of hoary text, including Gutenberg's Latin Bible from the 15th Century, a 1,200-year-old Hebrew codex called the "Sifra," and enough Greek philosophy to make even Homer seem succinct. At the end of a five-year flatbed scanner marathon, these digital copies will be accessible to speakers of dead languages everywhere, and hopefully for less than sacrilegious prices.

  • Canon unveils PIXMA MX892 wireless all-in-one, prints from the cloud for $200

    If you're in the market for a new wireless printer for that fancy new home office, Canon has a new model that may suit your needs. The PIXMA MX892 wireless all-in-one boasts copy, scan and fax features for those official docs that still have to be sent over the wire. Prints employ the ChromaLife, 5-ink system for high quality images at a resolution of 9,600 x 2,400 dpi. The printer also features a 3-inch LCD screen for last-minute adjustments and will have your 4 x 6 inch borderless Yellowstone photos printed in around 20 seconds each. Built-in effects, such as toy camera and fish-eye, offer quick photo customization in the event of an extreme time crunch. Through software like Google Cloud Print and PIXMA Cloud Link, you can send those documents or photos to the MX892 directly from online albums and your mobile device -- should you be on the move.   • Use iConvert to scan documents directly to your iPad

    I saw quite a few document scanners for iOS devices at CES last week, but this is about as elegant as they come. Brookstone is offering a scanner called iConvert, which uses your iPad as the receptable for anything you scan with it. Not only does it scan your documents with a 300 dpi scanner, but it even does a very nifty graphical representation of the document showing up on the screen. The iConvert is US$50 cheaper than the popular Doxie Go at $149, but of course this scanner is specifically built for the iPad or iPad 2 and offers fewer features than other scanners. There are also a few apps out there (including Scanner Pro) that will let you use the iPad's camera to pull in documents without extra hardware. Those don't work nearly as well, though. If often bring drawings or forms into a digital format, you'll want something more reliable. The iConvert seems like a solid option, and the fact that it's completely based on the iPad means it should be simple to port around. Brookstone is offering it for purchase next month. [via Dvice]

  • Scientists scan damaged audio discs, resurrect fresh beats

    Digitizing your analog archives? Vinyl to CD / MP3 / iPod turntables might do well enough for your old 45s, but the folks at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory prefer to listen to their old beats by taking pictures of them. More specifically, restoration specialists are using a system called IRENE/3D to snap high resolution images of damaged media. The cracked discs -- often made of wax on brass or composition board -- are then repaired digitally, letting researchers play the digitized discs with an emulated stylus. So far, the team has recovered a handful of 125 year old recordings from a team in Alexander Graham Bell's Volta laboratory. The all digital system gives researchers a hands-off way to recover audio from relic recordings without running the risk of damaging them in the process -- and no, they probably won't let you use it to listen to that beat up copy of the White Album you've had in your closet since eighth grade.   • Kraft vending machine teases children with adult-only pudding dispenser (video)

    We've seen odd and law-swerving vending machines before, but none as meanspirited as Kraft's collaboration with Intel that only gives pudding samples to adults. The unimaginatively titled iSample denies the youthful its sweet nectar by taking a facial scan and determining dessert deservedness based on biometric data, like how far apart your facial features are. Part experiment, part publicity stunt, Intel is trying out technologies that could recommend products based on age. The company also claims it may retrofit the technology into existing machines to let companies study who's buying its products; Kraft is clearly in it just to deny children some pudding. To see if you have spent enough time at the fountain of youth, head down to Chicago's Shedd Aquarium or New York's South Street Seaport, and take your place in the line of parents ordering one for their progeny.   • Stradivarius violin recreated from CAT scan, 'sounds amazingly similar'

    We've seen all kinds of crazy things being printed -- from bones to blood vessels -- and now you can add antique violins to that list. Music loving Radiologist Steven Sirr popped his into a CAT scanner to see what it was made of, then showed the results to a violin-making friend. Curiosity soon led them to scan everything from guitars to mandolins, so when the chance to take a peek inside a 307-year-old Stradivarius came up, how could they resist? 1000 scans later, the files were converted to 3D CAD format and another violin maker enlisted. Crucially, the images show the density of the wood all the way through, allowing a CNC machine to carve out copies of each section, with different woods used to match the differing densities. With all the parts in place and a lick of varnish, the replicas were complete. Sirr claims the copies sound "amazingly similar" to the original, but we are unsure if he plans to make it open-source.

  • DARPA to develop biometric sensor capable of seeing through walls, pulling your heartstrings

    The feds may soon know the way to your heart. Literally. Earlier this month, the forward-thinkers over at DARPA announced plans to develop new technologies capable of identifying human life through walls. The program, known as "Biometrics-at-a-distance," would essentially combine two pre-existing Pentagon projects: the Radar Scope, a device that can see through walls, and 2009's LifeReader, a system that uses Doppler radar to detect heartbeats. Though the military already employs a handful of devices to help soldiers see humans from behind walls, DARPA apparently thinks there's room for improvement. Most contemporary technologies, for example, only work from a maximum distance of eight meters, and aren't as accurate within more densely populated areas. DARPA wants its next project to extend this range beyond ten meters, while sharpening its ability to penetrate thicker obstructions. The agency also wants its sensor to identify individual humans using electrocardiography, which traces the heart's electrical activity. According to DARPA, this could allow users to pinpoint up to ten people at the same time, which could pay dividends during disaster rescue efforts, military operations, or your next Eyes Wide Shut party.

  • AOptix e-Gate could improve global airport security, replace ID checks with iris scans

    You're certainly not alone if you think that the current airport security process is far from ideal. AOptix hopes to streamline and speed up security procedures by replacing manual boarding pass and ID checks with a biometric kiosk called e-Gate. The new system, which verifies passenger identities by matching an iris scan with a boarding pass, just received (IATA) approval, and is currently being tested in three airports around the world. It's not as slick as a similar concept we saw earlier this summer, but e-Gate could be implemented with a trusted traveler program, creating special lanes for pre-approved frequent fliers -- similar to the US Customs Global Entry system in place today. We don't see it replacing X-ray machines and check-in interviews, but it could remove human error from the equation -- at least when it comes to verifying your identity.   • Comscore finds 6.2 percent of smartphone users scan QR codes

    QR codes may be turning up in more places than ever these days, but are people actually using them? According to market research firm Comscore, at least some of them are -- 14 million in June in the US alone, to be specific, or about 6.2 percent of all smartphone users. As for who makes up that slice of the smartphone market, Comscore says that just over 60 percent are male, 53 percent are between the ages of 18 and 34, and 36 percent have a household income of $100k or more. Folks are also apparently more likely to scan QR codes at home than at a retail store, and magazines and newspapers edge out websites or product packaging when it comes to the top source of the QR code being scanned. So, not exactly an explosion in use, but still fairly impressive for a weird-looking barcode that was rarely seen outside of Japan until a few years ago.

    Lookin' to get your Grown Nerd on? Look no further. We just sat through 1.5 hours of high-brow technobabble here at SIGGRAPH 2011, where a gaggle of gurus with IQs far, far higher than ours explained in detail what the future of 3D face scanning would hold. Scientists from ETH Zürich, Texas A&M, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon University as well as a variety of folks from Microsoft Research and Disney Research labs were on hand, with each subset revealing a slightly different technique to solving an all-too-similar problem: painfully accurate 3D face tracking. Haoda Huang et al. revealed a highly technical new method that involved the combination of marker-based motion capture with 3D scanning in an effort to overcome drift, while Thabo Beeler et al. took a drastically different approach. Those folks relied on a markerless system that used a well-lit, multi-camera system to overcome occlusion, with anchor frames acting as staples in the success of its capture abilities. J. Rafael Tena et al. developed "a method that not only translates the motions of actors into a three-dimensional face model, but also subdivides it into facial regions that enable animators to intuitively create the poses they need." Naturally, this one's most useful for animators and designers, but the first system detailed is obviously gunning to work on lower-cost devices -- Microsoft's Kinect was specifically mentioned, and it doesn't take a seasoned imagination to see how in-home facial scanning could lead to far more interactive games and augmented reality sessions.
