As Sony alluded earlier this month, spaghetti Western shooter Secret Ponchos will reach the PlayStation 4 on December 2. That's great news for fans of top-down competitive shooters that borrow liberally from both fighting games and John Wayne-era cowboy lore, but even better news for PlayStation Plus subscribers who will find the game added to the service's Instant Game Collection for the entirety of December. Once it's arrived, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download Secret Ponchos at no additional charge, and can play the game as long as their subscription remains valid. According to Sony's earlier tease, it will be joined there by the Netherrealm Studios/DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us, though we've yet to receive official confirmation of when that game will arrive, nor any word on when the long-delayed Driveclub: PS Plus Edition might reach the service. Sony teased some of its coming PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection releases today, revealing that subscribers will receive free copies of NetherRealm's one-on-one fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition and Wild West shoot-'em-up Secret Ponchos for the PlayStation 4 next month. Standalone Infamous: Second Son expansion Infamous: First Light and atmospheric puzzler The Swapper are next in line to join the PS4 Instant Game Collection in January. Sony notes that Injustice arrives as "the first AAA Blu-ray title to join the Instant Game Collection for PS4," replacing the postponed racer Driveclub: PS Plus Edition while developer Evolution Studios sorts out lingering server issues. "We understand many of you are waiting for Driveclub PS Plus Edition to be added to the Instant Game Collection, and we apologize that the game is not yet ready to launch," PlayStation Digital Platforms senior manager Matthew Harper stated. "We want you to know that we're committed to providing Driveclub PS Plus Edition to members when it's ready, and the Evolution team is working hard to make it a reality." [Image: Warner Bros]

Listen up, pilgrim: arena battle game Secret Ponchos has received a new update this week, introducing a new character, a new map and new mode in which to obliterate your enemies, Old West-style. The Matador is Secret Ponchos' fifth playable character, and uses a combination of her saber and cape to dizzy and confuse foes before slicing and dicing them like hunks of steak. She and the other outlaws of the game can go toe-to-toe in the newly-introduced free-for-all Deathmatch mode, or join up with three other friends in 4v4 Domination. If you're getting bored of the scenery, you can also check out The Ranch, a new map set in the remains of a burned-out homestead. To celebrate, developer Switchblade Monkeys has not only marked the Early Access title down to $8.99 - 40 percent cheaper than it's usual $14.99 - until August 19, but has also made it so that customers who purchase Secret Ponchos during that time will receive a second Steam code to share with a friend. Or enemy! Your choice. [Image: Switchblade Monkeys]

This is what Joystiq knows about ponchos: they keep you warm, look cool while you're riding a horse in a storm, are appropriate attire for selling burritos outside a Phish concert, and they make excellent dog beds when you're done with them. The things we don't know about ponchos? That's a secret. Switchblade Monkeys has the arcane knowledge that Joystiq covets. Secret Ponchos is Switchblade's new PvP shooter, hitting PC and PlayStation 4 this year and currently available through Steam Early Access. Always willing to fight for our right to party and know things about ponchos, Joystiq will take on Switchblade Monkeys in their own game on Joystiq Streams. We'll be playing the brand new 4-versus-4-player mode in Secret Ponchos on Joystiq.com/Twitch at 4PM EST. While Joystiq pits its negligible skills against Switchblade, we'll also be giving out free copies of the game in the chat while we play. Joystiq Streams broadcasts regularly on Tuesday and Thursday at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com/Twitch, but if you never want to miss a surprise stream make sure to follow us on Twitch! • Secret Ponchos now slapping iron on Steam Early Access

Strap on your six-shooters and sharpen your spurs: Secret Ponchos has officially made its Steam Early Access debut. Officially described as a blend of fighting game character diversity and the more intuitive action of an arena shooter, Secret Ponchos pits a handful of Old West stereotypes against one another in a quest to see who is the baddest hombre this side of the Rio Grande. Sublimely-named developer Switchblade Monkeys is apparently feeling generous, as along with the game's Early Access arrival, the studio has served up a new trailer, as well as a 25 percent discount on the game itself. You'll find that trailer above, and as you can see from the game's Steam listing, those who purchase Secret Ponchos prior to June 20 will pay $11.24, instead of the game's normal $15 price. Those of you with perfectly reasonable doubts about buying a game before it's actually complete, or who simply prefer to gun down hoople-headed varmints via home console can forego this Early Access offering for the game's imminent PlayStation 4 appearance. Originally slated for release in April, the game has been delayed, though we've yet to receive a new release date. [Image: Switchblade Monkeys]

Secret Ponchos may be on its way to Steam, according to a picture tweeted by developer Switchblade Monkeys. The image shows the Secret Ponchos silhouette with "Steam?" faded into the background. The tweet text says "What the?!" Late in March, Secret Ponchos was delayed on PS4, knocking it out of an April launch window. Switchblade Monkeys said the game is instead going to enter beta to make sure it's "rock solid" before launch. Secret Ponchos is a Spaghetti Western dueling game, with a top-down perspective, and it's due to be at PAX East later this week. [Image: Switchblade Monkeys]

Secret Ponchos is staying holstered for now, after dev Switchblade Monkeys confirmed it isn't releasing its Wild West-themed combat game next month. The gunslinging online game was previously confirmed as a PS Plus freebie in April, but we now know Mercenary Kings is next month's PS4 offering on the service. Fans did the math and Switchblade Monkeys in turn confirmed the delay on Twitter, adding that Secret Ponchos is to go into beta testing to ensure it's "rock solid" ahead of release. We've reached out to Switchblade to find out the new ETA. Secret Ponchos wants PS4 players to get in tune with their inner John Wayne through its isometric Spaghetti Western gunplay, and the upcoming downloadable has a choice of one-vs-one standoffs, gang fights, and free-for-all shootouts. While gunslingers-to-be have to wait a bit longer for the game proper, Switchblade previously announced it's showcasing Secret Ponchos at next month's PAX East conference in Boston. • Spaghetti western Secret Ponchos is latest to join PS4's Plus party [update]

Secret Ponchos is confirmed for PlayStation Plus on PS4, meaning it'll be free to subscribers of the service when the game launches in April. The spaghetti western-inspired debut from Switchblade Monkeys joins Don't Starve, The Binding of Isaac, and the now delayed Driveclub as some of the PS4 games coming to the service beyond this week's launch. As Creative Director Yousuf Mapara told Polygon, Secret Ponchos was initially built in Unity, but now uses Sony's PhyreEngine.. Other games running on PhyreEngine include thatgamecompany's PS3 library, Knytt Underground, Gravity Rush, and Demon's and Dark Souls - not a bad list of references, really. Update: Initial wording in this post may have been interpreted as Sony requesting Secret Ponchos be built in PhyreEngine. Mapara told Joystiq Sony's been "totally supportive" over whatever engine was used. We've adjusted the post accordingly.

In a block of time dedicated to indie games, Sony revealed the Switchblade Monkeys-developed spaghetti western Secret Ponchos is coming to the PlayStation 4. Switchblade Monkeys was founded by Yousuf Mapara, former Art Director at Radical Entertainment. Sony's Adam Boyes noted that all indies shown would make their "exclusive console debut" on the upcoming PlayStation Platform.
