So you've been abroad for the past few years, backpacking across Europe or whatever it is you were doing -- we didn't want to ask. It's none of our business what you were up to, but now that you're back, maybe you want to dust off your keyboard, boot up your PC and see what you've missed? If you're a Serious Sam fan you've missed quite a few games. As if celebrating your return, Steam is offering a Serious Sam bundle on sale. It collects eight different games for $28.90. These include the classic Serious Sam games and their HD remakes, the sequels Serious Sam 2 and Serious Sam 3: BFE, and the Mommy's Best Games indie effort, Serious Sam Double D. Once this deal expires on February 27, the bundle cost $84.99.Accompanying the sale is a nice retrospective video that looks back at the iconic PC series, which you can watch above this chunk of text. Convenient.

  • Steam Autumn Sale: Deus Ex, Dead Island half off

Investing in ostentatious sword-arms is a lot easier today, with Steam chopping 50 percent off the price of Deus Ex: Human Revolution in its Autumn Sale. That lowers it to $24.99, alongside The Missing Link DLC -- also discounted to $7.49. Dead Island receives its own dramatic reversal in price ($24.99), as does Telltale's Back to the Future series ($9.99). The Serious Sam HD double pack is quite the temptation at $2.99, but we've vowed to do something more constructive this weekend. Why not administer intravenous therapy to an ailing patrician for $6.79?

No, seriously, every Serious Sam HD game is seriously 75 percent off all this weekend on Steam -- meaning Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter for $3.74, The Second Encounter for $4.99, and the recently released Gold Edition for $10 (which includes both remakes and the originals). This deal is unfortunately exclusive to PC Steam gamers, as the titles have yet to receive the Mac treatment. And that's seriously a shame, isn't it?

Fan site Seriously! supposedly got the scoop from Devolver Digital, publisher of HD remakes Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter and Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter, about Serious Sam HD: Gold Edition -- a bundle which includes both remakes, as well as both original games. That can't be good for the original games' self-esteem, being bundled with sleeker, more attractive-looking versions. Have you no heart, Devolver Digital? According to Seriously!, Steam users will be able to download Gold Edition on Thursday for $39.99s. We've followed up with Devolver Digital for confirmation and will let you know what we hear back.

What you may not know about Sam, resident evil-alien-thing-killer and titular hero of the Serious Sam series, is that he's a serious guy. No, we don't mean he can't take a joke -- he's serious about savings, whether it be a coupon on a can of Campbell's Chunky or the fate of the whole world, he's all about the savings. And now GOG is saving you from a meaningless existence by offering the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter for $10. That Hamilton will not only net you the original shooter, but also the game's soundtrack, though we can't imagine why anyone would want that. We panic enough when we hear this in the game -- we don't need to start looking over our shoulder at every crosswalk for fear of kamikaze, combustible dudes running us down, you know?

No matter how you feel about Serious Sam's brand of first-person mayhem, you've got to admit the marketing behind the HD remakes has been brilliant -- and this latest video for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter is no different. It's the second promo to feature the "House of Sam," a place where folks can worship His divine shotgun; where those afflicted with Krundle Blindness -- an inability to see things in high-def -- can be be cured. Mostly, it's a place of magic. Click the play button on the trailer above and allow His divine presence to wash over you. Bathe in polygonal splendor and be healed, brothers and sisters. And remember: never attempt to treat your ailments with skunk meat.

There are times when it feels like some video games have a religious following. The latest trailer -- if you can call it that -- for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter illustrates what a real video game religion would be like. In short, it's kind of scary, in the way that only televangelists can be. Watch the video, and discover why Sam is the way.

Here at Joystiq, your health is our main priority. That's why we ensure that each and every post we present is void of toxins and meets your daily requirement of Vitamin Verbose. Still, sometimes we have to stray into the danger zone with things like this multplayer trailer for Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter. Basically, the trailer's got more flashing lights than '70s disco -- but if that's no concern for you, feel free to soak in the 14 multiplayer modes presented above, which run the gamut from co-op to competitive to objective-based modes. It's a smorgasbord of multiplayer mayhem, really. There are tried-and-true gametypes like Capture the Flag and your usual Deathmatch variants available, but our interest lies in some of the more original modes: BeastHunt, My Burden, and Co-Op Survival look like they're quite fun.

While the title has been on the radar since November, Majesco has now confirmed that Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter is headed to Xbox Live Arcade in addition to the PC. Previously relegated to the more nebulous "home console," the HD remake is officially coming to XBLA with some new features in toe. There is no release date mentioned, though the Steam version is currently listed for April 28. The game includes a new deathmatch mode along with co-op, capture the flag and survival modes. It also includes lots and lots of enemies. For those interested in the PC version, Steam is currently offering pre-purchases on the game for $17.99, two bucks off the normal $19.99 price. Pre-orders will also get an extra multiplayer and co-op character: Ugh-zan, the boss of The First Encounter. Check out a new trailer after the break. [Via Big Download]

Our beloved sister site, Big Download, reports that Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter has been slightly delayed to April -- and, frankly, if you can't trust your own sister, who can you trust? (That's on PC, mind you. No word on the 360 port's timing.) BD was also told that a deathmatch and dedicated servers update for the first game would arrive soon and that The Second Encounter would ship with both of those features. We're happy for the tidbits, but we can't figure out why Devolver Digital would give all that cool, manly news to our dumb little sister. She still plays with My Little Ponies and Polly Pocket. What does she know about a game where dudes have bombs for hands?

Have you wanted to check out Serious Sam HD, yet haven't had the ample supply of greenbacks to pony up? Steam is running a pretty sweet deal right now with a four pack bundle. By slapping down très Benjamins ($60), you can get four copies of the super happy fun time remake of Croteam's classic, essentially a buy-three-get-one deal and solid way to get an early lead in the Great Gift Giver of 2010 competition. Speaking of giving gifts: you'd also be able to give the gift of cooperation and the promise to rescue your friends from headless, screaming men holding bombs running at full speed toward them. If there's a better way to tell someone you care, we really haven't heard of it. [Via Big Download]

Considering there's really nothing serious about it -- some of the enemies have bombs for heads -- we're not sure how Serious Sam wound up with its name. It could be comic irony, or perhaps merely for its delightful sibilance. Honestly, we may never know. What we do know is that Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter is this week's XBLA release, as promised last month. Sporting newly fancified graphics, online co-op and some serious action (oh that's it!), the game will be available for 1200 ($15).

If unrelenting onslaughts of bad guys who want bad things to happen to you sounds like a good time, then you may be interested in Steam's weekend deal: Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter. The classic shoot-everything-in-sight-'em-up with retooled graphics has been discounted to a very manageable $6.79 from now until Monday on Steam, which comes out to about 817 kills for each copperhead spent. It's a pretty good deal, but be warned: You very well may look to kill anybody wearing a green or blue shirt for the rest of your life.

It's very, very possible that you might have been sated solely by the new Serious Sam: The First Ecounter HD holiday trailer. It's hard not to be satisfied by the sight of Santa suit clad Sams running around and destroying everything in sight. It really calls to mind the true spirit of Christmas. That said, we could always do with more holiday cheer, so you should know that the Xbox Live Arcade version has been confirmed for a January 13 release. See, cheery, right?

After revealing the news that it would be giving Serious Sam: The Second encounter an HD makeover, Devolver Digital has now dropped some bad news: Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter has been delayed on the Xbox 360. According to the Devolver Digital Twitter account, the XBLA version of the game has been pushed to January. No specific date was given, though we're willing to bet it'll be a Wednesday, which narrows it down to January 6, 13, 20 or 27. Where are you putting your chips? [Via Shacknews]

Hot on the heels of the recently released Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Croteam and Devolver Digital have announced that Serious Sam: The Second Encounter will also receive the HD treatment. The serious sequel is slated to arrive on PC and "home console" in early 2010 and, like The First Encounter, it will receive a graphical overhaul to make all the carnage ever so smooth. In addition to the resolution upgrade, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter will feature a new co-op tournament mode that will "allow teams to compete with one another." Shocking, we know. In a somewhat stranger turn of events, The Second Encounter will be featured at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, where teams will compete for the Digital Youth Award. The award espouses "the values of creativity, culture, friendship, education and unity" -- none of which we associate with Serious Sam.

In Serious Sam, you use an increasingly powerful and ridiculous set of weaponry to blast an increasingly horrifying array of demons back to the dimension they came from. To put it another way, Serious Sam is what your grandmother imagines every video game to be. Serious Sam: The First Encounter has just been brought into the modern era by Majesco and Devolver Digital with Serious Sam HD, on Steam today with a $20 price tag. I stepped into the beefy hero's signature T-shirt for a couple of hours to see how well the experience had held up over the years. %Gallery-66818%

    11.20.2009

Croteam has announced that Serious Sam HD will be available on PC starting November 24. As the name implies, Serious Sam HD is the high definition remake of Croteam's flagship first-person shooter. Apart from the redone graphics, the game's major feature is gigantic hordes of furiously attacking enemies. It is, in short, seriously old-school FPS designed to engender mad, constantly quick-saving fear in its players. The game can be pre-ordered for $17.99 on Steam, $2 off the regular price.
