Motorola announcing Android plans today, but what's coming?
Motorola's out in San Francisco today at GigaOM's Mobilize 09 event to finally dish the real story on its Android-flavored future -- and considering that T-Mobile's CTO Cole Brodman is co-keynoting with Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, it's reasonable to think that T-Mobile will once again be leading the way for carrier adoption of the platform in the US (Verizon's rumored Sholes, on the other hand, might be a no-show). We'll know soon enough what's going down, but user agent profiles recently published on Moto's own site detail two Android-powered devices -- model numbers MB200 and MB300 -- that feature UMTS (and very likely HSPA in some form), HVGA displays, and in the case of the MB300, probably a 5 megapixel cam considering a mention of 2592 x 1944 resolution. The MB200's profile oddly mentions 640 x 480 in its place, and it really doesn't sit well with us to think that Moto would be working on a 3G HVGA Android phone with a measly VGA cam that reeks of 2004 technology -- but all will revealed soon enough. Leaked Verizon docs point to October launch for Storm 2, Motorola Sholes, LG VX8575
This is all still firmly in the realm of rumors and speculation for the time being, but some purportedly legit internal Verizon documents obtained by BlackberryOS.com are offering a bit more fodder suggesting that the BlackBerry Storm 2 could be launching in October -- or October 14th, specifically. The same documents also point to an October launch for Motorola's Android-based Sholes smartphone, as well as a "mid-October" launch for LG's vx8575 "Chocolate Touch" (which we assume is the same or a variant of the BL40 Chocolate Touch). All in all a pretty big month for Verizon -- assuming everything actually pans out as rumored, of course.
Android Market re-imagined for Donut and beyond?
Android's had a generally black-dominated UI theme since its initial launch -- we'd even go so far to say that it's become one of the platform's trademarks -- but is it all about to go away? A tipster to CNET has sent in a couple shots of what appears to be a totally revamped Market that has apparently made appearances both on Donut and on the allegedly Eclair-equipped Motorola Sholes, possibly portending a more wide-reaching interface shift to brighter, more colorful controls and elements. Outside of the facelift there's no word on any actual new functionality here, so... you know, hang onto your G1 for dear life if you're digging the dark Market. [Thanks, z.kalach]
Motorola holding Android event on September 10, awesome new handsets in store?
Could this be it? Motorola's heading out to San Francisco to host an Android-centric event early next month. We're not being told what's on the docket just yet, but if we had to guess, it's probably some combination of the Morrison and Sholes that have leaked over the past few weeks. The invitation says "Save The Date," but you know what we're thinking: this is really "Save The Company." Make or break, Moto. Let's do this.
Storm 2, Motorola Sholes, Nokia Twist dated for Verizon, according to leaked doc
We've heard about a good number of these phones were bound for Verizon Wireless already, but if this leaked doc via Boy Genius Report is to be believed, we now have a much better idea when they should be within reach of consumer hands. First up is Samsung Rogue for sometime this month (we previously heard today, but that's looking very doubtful at this point) for an estimated $370 subsidized. Next on the calendar is the "female centric" Nokia Twist 7705 in late September for $230, which more likely than not is the swiveling device we've seen on two prior occasions. Also due out next month is the Samsung Intensity for $130 (screenshot after the break). LG Chocolate Touch was rumored by Best Buy for today, but here it's listed for an October debut, along with Storm 2, a "low cost QWERTY" HTC Razzle / Blitz 2 (XV6175, perhaps?), and the Motorola Sholes "Google Phone," red D-pad likely in tow, all with TBD price tags. Rounding out the list in late November is the BlackBerry Curve 2, which we wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be the 8530. The first one expected for public is the Rogue, replacing the Alias 2 that just launched back in May. What gives Verizon, no love for e-ink textpads?
Motorola Sholes Android phone for Verizon appears in the flesh
Hm, maybe Motorola should have stuck with the render a while longer, cause this first shot of the Verizon-bound Sholes Android smartphone is looking mighty rough. Of course, it is just a blurrycam leak, and there's a chance we're not seeing this set's true beauty, but honestly, we're not sure even the most loving press photographer can make that red D-pad attractive. We'll find out soon enough, if things go as planned.
Motorola posts $26m Q2 profit, promises cheap Android thrills, does a little dance
See that image there on the right? Yeah, it's a pretty drastic departure from the Sad Moto™ face that had become all too common when talking about the company's financials. Just a quarter after posting a dreadful $291 million loss, the outfit responsible for creating the RAZR and then doing nothing for half a decade is finally showing a profit once more. The Q2 numbers show an "unexpected" $26 million profit on sales of $5.5 billion, $1.8 billion of which came from the handset division. Of course, that very division managed to lose $253 million and see its global market share slip to 5.5 percent, but with a big bang from Android reportedly just months away, CEO Sanjay Jha ain't taking time to frown. Just hours after the Verizon-branded Sholes smartphone surfaced, Mr. Jha was quoted as saying that two Android devices would be "in stores for the holiday season," with launches occurring on "two major carriers in North America and multiple carriers outside the US." He also noted that plans were in place to ship "several additional Android-based devices in the first quarter of 2010," but details beyond that were vague. Motorola Sholes Android phone headed for Verizon?
On the lookout for the Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, "Sholes" is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn't hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it'll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn't look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it, Morrison).
