Sony's new OLED display promises higher quality images, glitch-free brightness
It may not be as flexible as some of the other displays we saw at last week's SID conference, but Sony seems confident that its new OLED panel will deliver high quality images with enhanced, glitch-free brightness. The 9.9-inch screen transmits images in 960 x 540 resolution, boasts a ninety-six percent color gamut, and is powered by a Self-Aligned Top-Gate TFT (in which the gate material is placed above the insulator) that reduces disparities in luminosity. To achieve this, Sony developed a new, four-part manufacturing process that lowers the parasitic capacitance between the gate electrode and the TFT. The top-gate structure, moreover, shortens the TFT's channel length, making it easier to adapt the technology to larger, high-resolution displays. No word yet on when the prototype will hit the market, but when it does, it'd be nice if it's priced as reasonably as some other OLEDs from Sony.
Sony produces 7.4-inch OLED display for professionals, prices it accordingly
We're still waiting for the OLED revolution to make our monster LCD HDTVs obsolete, but until it finally gets here we're left covering niche devices like this, the 7.4-inch PVM-740 professional monitor from Sony. It has a 960 x 540 resolution, can be connected directly to camera systems, is rack-mountable, and is said to "deliver superb high contrast, high color images, even in ambient light." That we'll believe when we see it, but given the $3,850 MSRP ($1,000 dearer than the consumer-oriented 11-inch XEL-1), we don't expect to ever be seeing one in the wild anyway.
Sony OLED 3D TV eyes-on
Hey! Don't run away just because this here display has 3D in its name -- it's optional don't you know. Sony is showing off its 24.5-inch OLED television here at CES, and we have to admit to being blown away once more by the sheer vibrancy and clarity of the output. The jump from the 15-inch panels that are still very sparsely available in retail channels is most welcome. We can totally envision spending our happily ever after with one of these screens serving all of our visual needs, 3D or otherwise. Sony's reps couldn't tell us when these will make it to market, but the pics below should whet appetites appropriately. %Gallery-82050%
