Now that Microsoft has unveiled its Project Scarlett Xbox gaming ambitions, there's some good news and some bad news about backward compatibility. The good news is that games from four generations of Xbox will be playable on the new hardware. Even better news is that a pretty sweet list of titles are being added to the program today. The bad news is that the program, which launched during E3 in 2015, is coming to an end for original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.

It's emerged Clint Hocking, the lead designer of Far Cry 2 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, left Valve towards the end of last year. According to Hocking's blog and his LinkedIn profile, the industry veteran's post as a designer and level designer ended in December 2013. The former Ubisoft and LucasArts creative director joined Valve in June 2012, but as Game Informer notes, it wasn't known what he was working on there. If the rumor mill is to be believed, Hocking was involved with the as-yet-unannounced Left 4 Dead 3. Back in October, Hocking featured on a supposed list of people working on the game, with ValveTime reporting (via superannuation) the list was procured from an internal Valve database.

Ubisoft Toronto is collaborating with Ubisoft Montreal on an Assassin's Creed game coming after AC4: Black Flag. and has plans to be involved with the development of four other unannounced games. Speaking with Polygon, managing director Jade Raymond said the studio, involved with Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rainbow Six: Patriots, has plans set for five further games in total."We have two big collaborations coming that we're not talking about, on two of the biggest franchises at Ubisoft. We also have two new IP," Raymond told Polygon, noting that the fifth project is a Splinter Cell game.Raymond's comments follow on from the intentions she laid out in 2010 to eventually have five triple-A projects going on at Ubisoft Toronto at the same time, with a staff of some 800 people involved. In other words, Ubi Toronto's plans for world domination are beginning to surface, and we should call the authorities immediately.

  • 'Ultimate' Far Cry, Splinter Cell bundles spotted on UK retail site

UK retailer GAME has listings for an Ultimate Far Cry Compilation and something called Ultimate Splinter Cell, each with tentative release dates of 2013. The Far Cry compilation is priced at £40 for Xbox 360 and PS3, and £30 for PC, and Splinter Cell comes in PC flavor only, for £30. The product listings don't provide any extra details and there is so far no word of any similar bundles existing on US shores.Tomorrow Far Cry 3 gets a dose of free DLC exclusively for the PS3, with the High Tides co-op expansion. We thought Far Cry 3 had "excellent, explicit design" and it taught us the dangers of trusting in goats, which is probably the most important lesson we've ever gleaned from a game.

  • Tom Hardy straps on the goggles for Splinter Cell movie

Ubisoft has found its star for a film based on the popular stealth series, Splinter Cell. Tom Hardy will trade his Bane mask from The Dark Knight Rises for the glowing goggles worn by the game's gruff protagonist, Sam Fisher.According to a report on Variety, Ubisoft has yet to lock down a studio, though it has engaged with Paramount and Warner Bros. in preliminary talks. The script also has yet to be finalized – it's coming from Eric Warren Singer, who wrote 2009 thriller The International. If it all goes through, Hardy will join Michael Fassbender, who is taking lead on an Assassin's Creed film with New Regency, in Ubisoft's forthcoming film lineup.Meanwhile, the next game in the Splinter Cell series, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, is slated to launch in Spring 2013.

  • Report: Ubisoft in talks with Warner Bros., Paramount on Splinter Cell movie deal

Tom Clancy's no stranger to films, so it's not the most surprising news to hear that his Splinter Cell line of video games may be getting the cinematic treatment. Deadline reports that Ubisoft is in talks with both Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures over the potential for a film tie-in (though talks with the former are said to have fizzled already). It's unclear which game, if any, the film would follow. It's also important to note that deals like this don't always pan out (we're looking at you, Uncharted and BioShock films). And even if the film rights were optioned by a film studio, there's then no guarantee that a script would be written or a film made. What we're trying to say is: take all of this with a Bonneville Salt Flats-sized grain of ... well, you know.[Pictured: Splinter Cell: Blacklist]

GOG.com, purveyor of fine vintage software (and, recently, more modern fare), has added a trio of games to its DRM-free service, including Thief: Deadly Shadows.Developed by Ion Storm Inc., the third installment in the celebrated stealth series sees master thief Garrett embroiled in a terrible prophecy. The only means of escape lies in unrestrained pickpocketing, merciless guard-clubbing and at least one jaunt through a place so scary, you'll Alt-Tab out of the game and look for reprieve on Reddit.Oh, and two more: You may now possess Ubisoft's, Tom Clancy's, Clint Hocking's Splinter Cell; and Anomaly: Warzone Earth, the reverse tower defense game that was most recently ported to Xbox Live Arcade. All three games are available for $9.99 each.

  • Ubisoft planning to expand Toronto studio to 800 employees within 10 years

Ubisoft Montreal, as we've reported before, is a huge video game outfit with a large team of developers coordinating multiple projects at a time, across up to six different studios. Ubisoft wants to repeat that structure in its new Toronto studio, according to the Financial Post. The French company is adding over 600 employees to the current staff of 210 over the next 10 years, which means an investment of over $500 million in that time. That has big ramifications, not only for Ubisoft's future as a publisher and developer, but for Toronto's Wallace Avenue neighborhood as well (where these employees will live, work, and spend all of this money). As for the studio itself, it's currently at work on five upcoming Ubisoft titles, including the next Splinter Cell. As more and more is invested in the operation there, that list will probably grow.

Got five bucks? Want a couple of kinda-old Ubisoft PC games? • Splinter Cell HD Trilogy missing another feature: inverted aim

Look, we're not prejudiced, we just think people who play shooters with inverted aim turned on have backwards brains. Backwards -- broken -- brains. But regardless of our feelings on the control setting, Ubisoft took things a step further with this week's release of the Splinter Cell HD Trilogy on PS3, entirely removing the option. That's not to say it's the most egregious omission, as both Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory are sadly missing their multiplayer modes, but it's a pretty major one no less. We've contacted Ubisoft to see if there's any chance that the option will get patched in at some point, but have yet to hear back. [Thanks, Merrick]

  • Splinter Cell Trilogy infiltrates shelves and PSN on Sept. 27

Following several delays and a European release, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Trilogy is finally set to launch in North America this week on Tuesday, September 27. The high-definition espionage saga should be slipping onto shelves in Blu-ray guise, and in a downloadable bundle on the PlayStation Store. There's no fiscal benefit to the digital version, as Ubisoft says they both cost $39.99. All three games in Splinter Cell Trilogy support stereoscopic 3D and improved identification with series protagonist Sam Fisher, who must also wear uncomfortable visual gadgetry on his head. The original game, its sequel, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory all support native 1080p rendering (though 720p output must be disabled in the XMB for Chaos Theory). According to the tech-savvy scrutinizers at Digital Foundry, the level of care shown in Splinter Cell's HD update is about on par with the economical work in the Prince of Persia HD trilogy. Its relative condemnation identifies the trio as "very basic conversions" of the PC games with rudimentary interface adjustments. The first two games reportedly perform in "an average manner," multiplayer has been cut, and textures are "disappointing." The standout title, DF concludes, is Chaos Theory, which "manages to acquit itself fairly well six years after its initial release."
