There are two very different games on XBLA this week. On the one hand we have Star Raiders, a space combat sim and, on the other, we have Gatling Gears, a twin-stick shooter. It's worth noting that while multiplayer modes were mentioned when Star Raiders was first announced last year, it appears they didn't make it into the final product. Major Nelson has tweeted that Star Raiders will arrive on Xbox Live Arcade this week. Based on the Atari 800 title of the same name, the new version was developed by Incinerator Studios. Like the original, Star Raiders focuses on galactic navigation and dogfights. It also comes packing multiplayer modes, so space combat fans may want to keep their eyes on it.

As predicted by the sage GameFly, Atari's Star Raiders is indeed being updated for new audiences. Incinerator Studios, formerly a THQ-owned dev (Cars) is making a new space combat game based on the classic for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, due in early 2011. The new version will still focus on spaceship dogfights, energy pool management, and navigation of a "galactic map," but also includes ship transformation features. Players will also be able to take part in epic space battles online in several multiplayer modes. "Great games such as X-Wing and Wing Commander were influenced by this Atari classic," Incinerator president Joel Goodman told GameSpot in an interview. Now we'll get to see what happens when Star Raiders influences ... Star Raiders.

[Star Raiders Tribute Page] It would appear that Haunted House marked the beginning of a new series of revamped Atari classics. Siliconera spotted GameFly listings for PS3 and Xbox 360 games called "Star Raiders" and "Centipede." Centipede, of course, is one of the most well-known early arcade games, featuring a trackball-controlled avatar firing lasers at on-screen centipedes and mushrooms. Star Raiders isn't as well known. It's a first-person, Star Trek-style space exploration and combat simulator released on various Atari computers -- as well as on Atari 2600, where it used the "Video Touch Pad" controller. The fact that these are on Gamefly suggests that they're retail releases -- since Gamefly doesn't rent downloadable games.
