Rocket League's annual Halloween event is about to get underway and this year, it'll be a crossover with Stranger Things. The Farmstead Arena will take on a distinctly Upside Down vibe, and the Netflix mega-hit's terrifying Mind Flayer will cast an ominous shadow over the field. It's not quite clear yet how or if the monster will affect your attempts to score goals, but Psyonix warned players to "make sure to look after your teammates."

Stranger Things 3 packed plenty of punch, not least because of the horrifying monsters that terrorized the residents of Hawkins. A great deal of work went into the creatures and the rest of the season's visuals, and VFX house Rodeo FX has released a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the effects came into shape. The videos spoil some of the season's more impressive shots, so you might want to hold off if you haven't finished Stranger Things 3 yet.

To the surprise of almost no one, Netflix has renewed the enormously successful Stranger Things for a fourth season. Judging by the teaser video, it seems the series' core setting might not be long for this world. It tells us "We're not in Hawkins anymore" while ominous Upside Down-style fauna engulfs a "Welcome to Hawkins" sign and the show's logo. Creepy.

Future Netflix original shows rated TV-14 or lower and movies rated PG-13 or below will no longer include depictions of smoking or e-cigarette use, except in cases of historical or factual accuracy. The service will also avoid showing smoking or e-cigarette use in more adult-orientated projects "unless it's essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it's character-defining (historically or culturally important)," it told Variety.

Netflix made it clear last month when it announced its E3 panel that its gaming ambitions extend beyond Stranger Things 3: The Game (and the Dark Crystal tie-in that was revealed this week). At the panel, it revealed what's next: more Stranger Things. Netflix is teaming up with Helsinki developer Next Games (The Walking Dead: Our World) for a mobile RPG/puzzle game based on the series.

When the Duffer Brothers said Stranger Things 3: The Game would tie in with the third season of the Netflix series, they weren't kidding. Bonus XP's suitably retro beat-em-up is due to launch on the Switch (and most likely other platforms) on July 4th, or the same day Stranger Things 3 is available to stream. The title has you playing one of 12 protagonists from the series and battling through events from the show, including the Starcourt Mall that has been at the center of Netflix's teasers from day one.

Stranger Things season 3 won't be coming out until Independence Day, but you can get your Upside Down fix way before it lands on Netflix. The sci-fi hit's first companion novel entitled Suspicious Minds just came out a few days ago, but Netflix has already announced a second one called Darkness on the Edge of Town. The second novel will drop on June 4th, a full month before season 3 becomes available for streaming, giving you enough time to finish and digest the prequel novel before diving into the new episodes.

Netflix is continuing its string of reboots by reviving Unsolved Mysteries, according to a report from Deadline. The streaming service is giving the greenlight to a 12-episode run of the true-crime and paranormal activity show. Shawn Levy, the executive producer of Stranger Things, will be overseeing the production.

'Bird Box' writer will lead Netflix fantasy series 'Shadow and Bone'

Netflix has put in an eight-episode order for Leigh Bardugo's Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows Grishaverse fantasy novels. And it's probably not just because the books in those series are bestsellers -- we'll bet the fact that the show was created, written and executive produced by Bird Box writer Eric Heisserer helped, as well. Netflix said Bird Box had the strongest first week of any of its films to date, with 45 million accounts watching the movie within that week alone. Heisserer also isn't the only Netflix hitmaker involved in the project: it's actually part of the streaming giant's deal with Shawn Levy's 21 Laps, one of the production companies behind Stranger Things.

While we rang in 2019 on the East Coast, Netflix decided it was time to drop a new detail about one of its most-anticipated series, Stranger Things. An 80s-era rendition of Dick Clark's New Year's Eve broadcast turns Upside Down, revealing a premiere date for the show's third season: July 4th, 2019. Since you've probably seen the show you can expect that celebrations won't go exactly according to plan, while key art and the teaser trailer drop in a "One summer can change everything" tag line. See you on Independence Day!

At The Game Awards, Stranger Things creators The Duffer Bros. hit the stage and announced a new game on the way tying in with their Netflix series. Made by Bonus XP -- developers of the first retro Stranger Things Game for mobile devices -- it looks to feature some arcade-style isometric action that blends in well with the show's 80s aesthetic. We don't have a lot of details yet, but this one will tie in with season three, which is set to debut next year. We'll have to wonder what might have been for the planned Telltale Games version, but at least it looks like fans will have something to play on "all platforms."

This is what Telltale's 'Stranger Things' game might have looked like

Following the "majority studio closure" of Telltale Games last week, the future of many of its planned projects has been up in the air. Rumors suggest that The Walking Dead: The Final Season has been canceled, incomplete, while The Wolf Among Us 2 has been scrapped entirely. Also on the chopping block is the much-anticipated Netflix partnership for a game version of Stranger Things. And to rub salt into the wound, clips of what the game could have looked like have now emerged on Reddit (admittedly from a random user, but we're pretty sure they're legit -- it'd take a lot of work to mock these up). As you can see, it's a bit of a departure from Telltale's usual artistic style.

Telltale Games: More 'The Walking Dead' episodes on the way?

    by

On Friday Telltale Games abruptly shut down, laying off most of its employees without warning. The studio was in the midst of wrapping up the Final Season of its The Walking Dead series, and tomorrow will release the second of four scheduled episodes. Fans who may have already purchased a season pass for all of the episodes have no word if they'll ever see the light of day. Earlier today, in a statement to Polygon, Netflix confirmed rumors that Telltale is still finishing Minecraft: Story Mode, which accounts for the remaining employees. Tonight, the game company's Twitter account posted that things might not be over for The Walking Dead, and said that "Multiple potential partners have stepped forward to express interest in helping to see The Final Season through to completion. While we can't make any promises today, we are actively working towards a solution that will allow episodes 3 and 4 to be completed and released in some form. In the meantime, episode 2 will be released tomorrow across all platforms as planned." The series has been popular over the years, and it seems sensible that there would be interest in finishing it properly. However, given the company's recent issues and then out of the blue shutdown, it's hard to trust that we'll see more of these games ever without more concrete information. Only time will tell if this interest turns into anything, which is a tough spot to be in for gamers who've already paid for the content, not to mention former workers suddenly twisting in the wind without severance or benefits -- would any revenue from future episodes end up in their pockets to make up for missing severance or benefits? According to one former employee, there were people who had started there just in the last week, including one who had moved across the country for a job.

Netflix won't premiere 'Stranger Things' season 3 until summer 2019

You'd better soak in that nostalgic Stranger Things season 3 teaser, as that's likely all you're getting for a while. Netflix programming exec Cindy Holland has revealed that the third installment of the Duffer brothers' show is launching sometime in summer 2019. That's a considerably longer wait than the 15 months between the first two seasons -- you're looking at a minimum of 18 months after season 2. There may be a good reason for the lengthier wait, though.
