Microsoft made the Surface Pro both lighter and quieter
Microsoft has mostly left the Surface Pro line untouched since late 2015, but the company is finally giving it a long overdue refresh today. Announced at an event in Shanghai earlier, the new machine -- now simply dubbed Surface Pro -- packs Intel's 7th-gen Core processors (Kaby Lake; m3, i5 and i7 flavors), an enhanced 12.3-inch PixelSense display (2,736 x 1,824) plus optional LTE Advanced radio due later this year. Microsoft calls this "the lightest, the best sounding, the fastest and the quietest Surface Pro ever," and the company was keen to claim that its own machine is 1.7 times faster than the iPad Pro.
Microsoft's Surface Pro 5 isn't coming anytime soon
If you were hoping Microsoft's upcoming Shanghai event would be the debut of the Surface Pro 5, we've got some bad news. In an interview with CNET last week, Surface chief Panos Panay explains that the company won't debut another model until there's "an experiential change that makes a huge difference in product line." Panay says that the "meaningful change" goes beyond updating to the latest processor to things like considerably better battery life and a notable weight reduction.
Microsoft is hosting a Surface event in Shanghai on May 23rd
The Surface Laptop isn't the only new piece of hardware Microsoft has coming up. The company sent out invites last night for an event in Shanghai on May 23rd, where it will "show the world what's next." That's pretty cryptic, but a tweet from Microsoft's Surface head, Panos Panay, might have spoiled the surprise a bit.
