T-Mobile's Nokia Nuron 2 shelved?
Of all the phones we didn't expect to have a successor, T-Mobile USA's Nuron ranks high on that list -- though it was a great deal seeing how it didn't require a smartphone data plan, the device itself offered users a pretty miserable (and unnecessarily WiFi-less) experience. New rumors suggest that the carrier had fixed its sights on Nokia's Symbian^1-powered C5-03 as the successor to the Nuron for launch early next month... but don't get your hopes up, because in the same breath, PocketNow reports that the project has already been killed off. No word on the logic behind the move, but the killing echoes the recent news that the X7's AT&T debut had been axed after the two companies failed to agree on marketing and pricing. Doesn't seem like T-Mobile would be playing those same games, but you never know.
Nokia C5-03: end of the year, €170, runs Symbian^1 for some reason
Doesn't it seem a little odd for Nokia to be launching any new touchscreen devices on Symbian^1 now that Symbian^3's been loosed courtesy of the N8 and C7? Alas, it looks like there'll be at least one new model running the old code -- in this case, the low-end C5-03. It's got a 3.2-inch display and 5 megapixel camera (no flash) -- and despite what you might be thinking, it does actually manage to pack both WiFi and 3G, pretty amazing for a €170 ($238) unsubsidized full-touchscreen device. Don't suppose we could expect an official firmware upgrade for this bad boy, could we? Look for it to launch at the end of the quarter, which also happens to be the end of the year.
Nokia 5250 gets official: €115 for a 2.8-inch touchscreen with 16:9 display ratio (updated)
Nokia is being coy this morning by revealing a trio of pictures of what it only describes as its "new device." Of course, being a devoted Engadget reader, you'll instantly recognize the visage above as that of the Nokia 5250 -- the already leaked successor to the 5230 ( aka the Nuron). Specs are promised for later today, so contain your excitement until a more civilized hour. For now, you'll find one more pic -- of the bodacious, camera-adorned back -- after the break. [Thanks, Adam B.] Update: That wasn't a long wait. Nokia Conversations has the scoop on the 5250, including confirmation of the name. The real headline here is the eminently frugal price of €115 ($146) before taxes and subsidies. For that handful of change, you'll get your old favorite S60 5th OS with a mobile version of Guitar Hero 5 pre-installed, along with an FM radio and a media player slap bang in the middle of your 2.8-inch homescreen, all to underline this new phone's musical inclinations. The touchscreen panel fits 640 x 360 pixels (16:9 display ratio), and battery life is rated for 18 days of standby, seven hours of talktime, or 24 hours of music playback. Not bad at all. Nokia 5230 Nuron excites the T-Mobile nervous system
The US will wake up to a fine howdy do from Nokia's 5230 Nuron now that it's officially announced for T-Mobile. The device first introduced by Nokia back in August will be available to middle America "in the coming weeks" on T-Mobile's 3G network. And unlike yesterday's wee C5, Nuron features a reasonable 3.2-inch, 640 x 360 (nHD) touchscreen for your Ovi Store apps and free Ovi Maps with turn-by-turn navigation to dance upon. Hell, it even has an onscreen keyboard if you want to do something productive like tap out a few emails, enter a URL to surf the web, or update your social networking status(es). While no price or specific date was announced, we've seen rumors of a 17 March launch for $70 on contract, or $180 without. Just remember that Nuron runs S60 5th; and with the improved Symbian ^3 touchscreen UI just around the corner (and no clear upgrade path) you'd better really want this device to make the jump whenever it does launch. Update: Nokia's own Joe Gallo has confirmed that the Nuron will sell for $69.99 on a 2-year contract at T-Mob.
Nokia's Ovi Maps Racing now available, makes the world your course
Since it looks like GT5's still another decade or two away from release, racing gamers need everything they can to survive the wait, and this is just about the most creative way we've seen to do that. At a glance, Nokia's Ovi Maps Racing looks like a pretty simple, standard 2D racer with an overhead view, but its secret sauce lies in the map: it can turn pretty much any street in the world into a racecourse. The game lets you chart out your heated battle using nothing more than Ovi Maps data and your finger, meaning Manhattan, Prague, or your folks' quiet, peaceful neighborhood are all potential targets for your high-speed bedlam. Seems like a great way to inject limitless replay value into an otherwise plain-vanilla racer, doesn't it? It'll work on any of Nokia's Symbian^1 (formerly known as S60 5th Edition) devices, and -- for now, anyway -- it's free. Follow the break for a quick promo video.
