US carriers partner on a better mobile authentication system
Two-factor authentication (2FA) via SMS and a smartphone provides a heavy dose of additional security for your data, but as the US government declared last year, it's not without its flaws. To fix that, the big four US mobile operators, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T have formed a coalition called the Mobile Authentication Taskforce to come up with a new system. Working with app developers and others, they'll explore the use of SIM card recognition, network-based authentication, geo-location, and other carrier-specific capabilities.
PlayStation Network finally adds two-factor authentication
Considering how much the PlayStation Network breach cost Sony, it's kind of crazy that the service didn't offer two-factor login authentication before now. But, that's no longer the case. Protecting your PlayStation account is SMS-based (which has its own limitations) versus using an authenticator app, however. You can set up device passwords for the PlayStation 3 and Vita handheld, and, really, from there it doesn't differ much than you're used to with other apps and services.
Houston grandmother becomes host of first 'super WiFi' hotspot, proves you're never too old for wireless
This ain't your grandma's WiFi -- that is, unless your grandma is 48 year-old Leticia Aguirre. The Houston woman became the host of the very first "super WiFi" hotspot, earlier this week -- the new network takes advantage of unused UHF TV channels to bring internet service to underserved communities. In collaboration with researchers at Rice University, a Houston-based non-profit fittingly referred to as Technology for All (TFA), facilitated the setup and is in the process of deploying more whitespace hotspots across the area. The FCC approved use of whitespace for the new "super WiFi" back in September of last year. Full PR after the break.
