With Doc Rock still traveling the Far East, I was going to subject TUAW TV Live viewers to another hour of ... me. Fortunately, America's favorite fun-sized podcast host -- Kelly Guimont -- decided to help out today, so the two of us will be taking to the airwaves this afternoon. Topic? Who needs a topic? We can talk for an hour easily! To join in to watch the live feed and participate in the chat, just click here. You'll join us on the AOL On Network. Sure, nobody reads anymore. But if you really want to become an expert in one topic or another, you need to pore over every word that's ever been published on the subject. Today, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I will talk about those books and/or authors that we follow or admire, with a special focus on those favorite tomes that have made a difference in how we work or play. These books don't have to be technical in nature -- there are some histories of Apple, old books describing products that no longer exist and personal favorites that have little or nothing to do with coding or how to use our favorite tech. The Consumer Electronics Show is still in full swing in Las Vegas today, bringing more hype and product announcements in one week than you'd ever think possible. Yeah, I know that it's hard to believe, but TUAW TV Live turns 4 years old in the next week. On December 23, 2009, I sat down in front of my iMac and started an hour-long Ustream broadcast, not knowing that almost four years later I'd still be doing this weekly show. Now, of course, I'm joined by my friend and colleague Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd for the show, which makes for even more fun. On today's show, we'll talk about the amazing changes that we've seen in the Apple world over the past four years and speculate on what could transpire during the next four years. We'd love to get your comments in the chat room, so join in on the fun. Note that due to the impending holidays, this is the last TUAW TV Live until January 8, 2014. Following last week's show, in which Doc and I went through our regrettable purchases of tech equipment, it occurred to me that there are a lot of current apps and products that could be placed in an online store category called "What were they thinking?" So today, we're going to take a look at some of the most questionable products -- both software and hardware -- that we've encountered over the past few years. Some of these products will be sure to have you shaking your head wondering who actually thought these were a good idea... Being the spoiled techno-brats that we are, Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd and I just had to go out last Friday and pick up new iPad Airs. Tweets we swapped over the weekend show that both of us are amazed with Apple's latest device, which not only boasts significant speed improvements and lighter weight, but also seems to have better battery life. On today's TUAW TV Live, we'll be talking about the new tablets and how much we love them, as well as go through our list of what we considered to be the essential apps to load onto the new devices. Our App Editor Kelly Hodgkins worked up a list of the first five apps she installed on her new iPad Air, and it should be enlightening -- if not just downright fun -- to see what Doc and I installed on our skinny little iPads. Tomorrow's the day for Apple's product announcement. At least one new iPhone will be announced, and if the past is any indication, we may see at least "one more thing" from the assembled Apple execs who will be showing off the company's latest innovations. TUAW is liveblogging the event beginning at 12:45 PM ET / 9:45 AM PT and you can bookmark our liveblog page today. TUAW TV Live will be moving to Tuesday this week, with hosts Steve Sande and Shawn "Doc Rock" Boyd doing a live post-event analysis beginning at 5 PM ET. We don't know yet if Apple will be live-streaming the event or not, but even if they are, be sure to leave a window open for the liveblog and the commentary provided by the TUAW blogging staff.

As I write this in the early afternoon (ET) of September 4, 2013, Samsung's big event is occurring, complete with orchestra on stage, satellite link to Times Square and the new Galaxy Note 3. Doc and I will take a few minutes to dissect today's announcements from Apple's biggest competitor, and then talk about next week's big event -- the Apple announcement on September 10 at which the next-generation iPhone is expected to be rolled out. Sure, Samsung's upstaged the kids from Cupertino with Galaxy Gear, but perhaps we'll see something new and exciting and won't have to put up with an annoying host wearing the ugliest glasses on the planet.
